aa - The polls are open! AQOTM for Sep. 2003 |
We're still drying out from Hurricane Isabel here, but at least the
weather has broken a little and there's a slight chill to the air. I
just love the times when seasons change.
Here are the nominations for Atheist Quote of the Month for September
2003. Vote for your favorite by responding to this thread. Votes will be
accepted until midnight, September 30. See rules below. Questions?
Comments? Email me.

1) Hey Moore, looks like your magic rock done got itself raptured right
outta the rotunda this morning! Your threescore of toothless
prayer-hicks said that GAWD would keep your magical rock from moving one
inch, but all it took was a couple of movers and some man-made simple
machines (specifically some wheels and wedges) and that big ole' godrock
rolled quite easily away. I'm glad my teevee had picture-in-picture so
that I could watch two live cable networks at once and catch two
different camera-angles of your big ego-feuled graven image eyesore
hauling ***** right outta there!

Na na. NA NA NA NA. HEY HEY HEY. GOODBYE!!!!!!
Na na. NA NA NA NA. HEY HEY HEY. GOODBYE!!!!!!
By: John Hattan
Nominated: nemo
Seconded: Liz

2) They're also not thinking. If their god wanted that stone to stay in
place, he/she/it would have made sure that that happened, surely. Maybe
nothing quite as outre as a heavenly voice, a thunderbolt, and the
incineration of all the heathens: maybe just the mechanical failure of
any device that tried to move the rock. Simple, subtle, elegant.
The only logical conclusion is that if their god exists, he/she/it just
flat-out doesn't give a ***** about a chunk of granite kowtowed to by a
bunch of hicks.
By: Robert Matthews
Nominated: Dr. Smartass
Seconded: Doug Semler
------------
3) Funny isn't it? We still don't know if "god" could make a rock so
heavy he couldn't move it. But we *do know humans can make a rock he
can't stop from being moved...
By: Mark K. Bilbo
Nominated: Dr. Smartass
Seconded: Doug Semler
------------
4) Another Christian chimes in, cute.
Our purpose is to enjoy life, and to ensure an enjoyable life for future
generations.
Your purpose is to fullfill the purpose of another being, which just
might not exist.
Good luck!
By: Lawrence Seib
Nominated: david asman
Seconded: Doubting Thomas
------------
5) They should, rather, be out collecting EVIDENCE, not signatures, if
they were honest.
By: Klaus Hellnick
Nominated: John Wilkins
Seconded: LP
------------
6) I honestly don't think you can blame religion per se. If it were not
for religious differences, "we" versus "they" violence would be manifest
through some other difference: ethnicity or language or economic
philosophy or geographic identity or skin color or gender or which end
of an egg gets opened first when eating one that's been soft boiled.
Let's face it: humans hate one another, and anything that will justify
that hate can and will be used.
By: Gregory Gadow
Nominated: Dr. Smartass
Seconded:
------------
7) there's a difference between psuedo- and the real thing? I didn't
know that. I thought that a real Christian is whoever is talking, and a
psuedo- is whomever he's talking about.
By: J Forbes
Nominated: towelie
Seconded: Fear gan dia
------------
8) Orientals must be a pain in the ***** for Christians. The Chinese have
recorded history that pre-dates some of the alleged stuff in the bible.
How come there is no Chinese book that says "we were under water for 40
days, how the hell did that happen?"
By: Mischa van Dinter
Nominated: MarkA
Seconded: Douglas Berry
------
9) In response to:
Won't it be a tad crowded(in heaven)?
Nope. Each believer will have their own God, yet there will still be
only one God. You will be aware that in Christian maths, 1 + 1 + 1 = 1,
but in heaven, 1 + 1 + ........ still only equals 1.
Don't try to understand it. Just believe.
By: Barry OGrady
Nominated: Dr. Smartass
Seconded: Nemo
------------
10) In response to:
I absolutely LOATHE Scientologists and their pseudo-religion,
Not really seeing any difference between a real religion and a
"pseudo-religion"
By: Lord Calvert
Nominated: towelie
Seconded: LP
------------
11) The theist version of faith in atheists can be compared to their
concept of morality among atheists. Many of them think that because we
don't have faith in God, then there is nothing else to have faith
in...that we can't have faith in anything if we don't have faith in
their particular sky spook.
I have faith in lots of things. I have faith in the basic decency of
humanity...which is unfortunatley all too often corrupted. I have faith
in the love and support of my family and friends. I even have faith in
things without evidence....for example I have faith that there is life
elsewhere in the universe. I just don't have faith in the absurd,
illogical, impossible or irrational. I don't have faith that the moon
is made of swiss cheese that magically changes to rock when the
astronaughts landed. I don't have faith that all existence outside of
myself is just in my mind. And I don't have faith that everything was
zapped into existence by some magical being, who insists that everyone
worships him, yet totally hides his existence except for a incredulous
set of books written thousands of years ago. I don't have faith that
the entire universe...millions of billions of galaxies spread across a
distance almost beyong imagining...countless worlds and stars and
wonders and phenomena....99.999999999999999999999% humanity will never
see or experience or even be aware of...was all created for the one of
the inhabitant species of one small world in one galaxy, that didn't
appear until 13 billion years after it's creation.
I have faith...I just don't have blind faith...or stupid faith!
By: Clayton Aguilera the Dirty Pierced Nipple *****
Nominated: JPG
Seconded: Dr. Smartass
------------
12) I would have thought that the Saudis would love Barbie dolls.
After all they can't speak and someone else has to direct every single
movement they make...just the way they like to treat real women!
By: Clayton Aguilera the Dirty Pierced Nipple *****
Nominated: Adam Marczyk
Seconded: towelie
------------
13) Christians think they are being humble when they kneel, or more
precisely, they think they are humbling themselves. What that betrays is
that they have such an overinflated sense of their own size and
importance that they feel they have to be gracious, and volunteer to
shorten their height so as not to encroach too much on the stature of
their universe-dwarfing God. If they had any true sense of their
smallness on the cosmic scale, they would know how laughable,
ridiculous, and comically arrogant that is.
By: Kronk
Nominated: Mike Smith
Seconded: Denis Loubet
------------
14) In response to:
I am curious how you conclude anything about the authenticity of a
photo based on the number of times it is copied.
Well it's the same rule the fundies like gassy were applying to the
bible the other day. The more copies you find, the more likely it is to
be true :)
By: quibbler
Nominated: Meteorite Debris
Seconded: Bob White
------------
15) "we who built America"?
You wouldn't be talking about those same people who had so little faith
in their God's ability to protect them that they *fled* European
persecution by others who believed just as passionately in that same
myth to move to the USA, then robbed the locals of their land,
livelihoods, belief system and self respect, and now want to oppress
everyone who doesn't buy into their self-sustaining lies, would you?
By: Budikka
Nominated: towelie
Seconded: Mekkala
------------
16) In response to:
Of course. The Bible is inerrant, and that's what it says. But you have to
redefine what you mean by "chew the cud" and "birds" i order to make it
fit with reality. ;-)
Oh *I get it. *Reality is errant!
By: Mark K. Bilbo
Nominated: Douglas Berry
Seconded: John Hattan
------------
17) Sorry fishboy, but you've already proven your evil agenda with your
rhetoric about magical talking end-of-the-world fish. You don't want an
enlightened populace but a fearful one that fears a demon haunted world
that could end any minute. Only problem is that the demons and monsters
have been scared away by science and are now only living under the beds
of the fearful. And those fearful want to elevate their position not by
losing their own fear but by trying to make everyone else as fearful as
they are.
And that, my fishy friend, is evil.
By: John Hattan
Nominated: Elroy Willis
Seconded: Mark K. Bilbo
------------
18) People should be taught critical thinking, research, and skepticism;
that faith without evidence is foolish; that rigid belief stifles
progress and fosters fanaticism; that fairy tales are fairy tales.
By: Witziges Rätsel
Nominated: Bob White
Seconded: Carl Kaufmann

Here are the rules for the Quote of the Month Contests.
RULES
1. Only atheists and agnostics may participate in the contests.
2. A quote is a valid entry for the contests if:
a. The quote is a brief piece of text;
b. The quote has recently been written in alt.atheism (verifiable);
c. Nomination of the quote is made by an atheist or agnostic
in alt.atheism
d. Nomination of the quote is supported by at least one other
atheist or agnostic in alt.atheism;
e. The quote is not nominated or seconded by the person who wrote it
in
the first place (no one is allowed to nominate him- or herself,
but a person
can vote for the quote he or she wrote.)
3. There will be two categories: 'Atheist Quote of the Month'
and 'Theist Quote of the Month'. The category for which a
quote must be nominated must be mentioned by the atheist or
agnostic who wants to nominate it.
If a quote is miscategorized (e.g. an atheist quote is mistakenly
nominated in the Theist QOTM category), the quote will be re-directed
to appear in the correct category, with approriate notification.
4. Nominations can be made until five days before the first of the
next month. If quotes are nominated after this period, they will be
considered as entries for the contest of the next month.
* When making a nomination, the word "nomination" MUST appear
somewhere in the subject line!
5. Each atheist or agnostic who visits alt.atheism has one vote to
cast for each category (two votes total).
6. Voting starts 5 days before the end of the month. During the month,
votes will be ignored. This way, all nominees will have equal chance of
winning.
7. The two winning quotes will be published in the QOTM Archive.
SUMMARY
A nomination must contain the following information:
1. The lines of the quote.
2. Who wrote it.
3. Who nominates or seconds the nomination of this quote (that's you!)
4. Which category this nomination is for.
5. The word "nomination" MUST appear somewhere in the subject line!
Publish the nomination or support for a nomination in a designated
thread, preferably called "[T/A]QoTM Nomination for [month]." You can
also e-mail it to me (see below).
VOTING
1. In the last five days of the month you can cast your vote in both
categories.
2. Votes must either be placed in the designated thread.

Some good ones and some that I couldn't puzzle out. Maybe a little
more background next time? (*What was #5 going on about anyway?)
I vote for #15. I almost didn't recognize it. Maybe too much context
was removed there as well? I liked this one when it was nominated
because I am part Cherokee. People have said some strange things to
me when I mention that I don't care for (dead President) Andrew
Jackson because he forced the Cherokee (civilized native tribe) into a
death march across country.
I liked #1 too, but I'll stick with 15.

Of course. The Bible is inerrant, and that's what it says. But you have to

This one please :

Tough to vote for one this month. Narrowed it down to three with
Quote #17 getting the vote by a whisker.

Honourable mentions to Quotes #15 and #16.

6) I honestly don't think you can blame religion per se. If it were
not for religious differences, "we" versus "they" violence would be
manifest through some other difference: ethnicity or language or
economic philosophy or geographic identity or skin color or gender or
which end of an egg gets opened first when eating one that's been soft
boiled. Let's face it: humans hate one another, and anything that will
justify that hate can and will be used.
