Object: aa- QOTM winners for October 2004
Here are the winners for October 2004.
AQOTM: Here, it was a runaway victory, of sorts. With 9 votes, our
winner was Raven:
6) In response to:

In order to begin we must start at the beginning! The most fundamental
of all questions that can possibly be asked is, "Does God exist?"

Absolute rubbish. There are all sorts of other questions far more basic,
such as "is this edible?", "is this creature interested in eating me?",
etc. You know, questions that actually have some practical value in the
answers.

TQOTM: Yeah, I know. Nothing much to choose from this month. But the
"winner" was clear. With 20 votes, we'll enshrine not-easily-duped:
1) In response to:

And maybe it's all a myth.

But myth can be theologically sound and true. You are being a true

Actually, right now, you can't.
Yesterday, I noticed the little blinky light on the router was flashing
like a firefly on speed. That caught my attention as the router's just to
the right of the desk and that maniacal flashing isn't normal for our
little low traffic site.
Checked the logs and there were LOGS. Traffic is usually so low, the logs
don't roll over but maybe once a month. Yesterday, I had more than one for
a single *day. They were *full of porn URLs and proxy attempts. I mean,
tons of them.
So I shut it down. Until I know what the blazes is going on and how to
block it, it's not coming back up.
From Googling around, it's most likely "referrer spam." But the weird
thing about it is that tactic shouldn't apply to anything on that server.
That is, there's nothing about the server which would make the referrer
spam game worthwhile. Yet the site was being hit from multiple machines
all at once. I can't make up my mind if the idiot spammers are just not
very bright and my server ended up on some list so all the vultures
swooped in at once (brainlessly as referrer spam won't do them any *good
here) or if some twit tried pulling a DDOS on us.
The *proxy attempts bug me the most. There were attempts to access other
sites using this one to proxy to the other site. Which would make it
*appear to the site being accessed that I was doing it. I don't see, yet,
any evidence they were successful but the assault was constant.
So I'm afraid the site is down for now. I've got some log analysis (and,
damn, those logs are huge) and research to do before I'll be able to come
up with a plan. And the real world is threatening to be busy this week so
this could take a few days.
Could be mere incompetence on the part of spammers but I can't find any
evidence anybody else has faced a comparable onslaught. I see other folks
have experienced barrages of referrer spam but dozens of machines all at
once? That doesn't appear common and makes me suspicious.
(I mean, given the superior and absolute morality of the christerbots, I
wouldn't put anything past them)

Yeah, I saw your post on the tech trouble. But you still have the site,
regardless of whether it's available for viewing. I'll be sending you
the file shortly.

Go right ahead. I'll hang onto it until I figure out what to do about the
porn tidal wave. <g>
You know, after leaving it down a day, I brought it back up for a while
last night and they're *still *there. What *is it with those people?

Oookay. Something went wrong on my end. I did get the email, the logs say
it was delivered, I just can't *find it. This is odd.
Can you send it again? Just twiddled some things and did a couple of test
emails, seems to be working now...

It's here. I have *no idea what I did to make the other one disappear into
a black hole. The logs showed a perfectly normal delivery. It just wasn't
there.
Sigh. I think I'm changing out the pop software this weekend. I've had
trouble out of that thing before. Just up and *swallowing email
inexplicably, that's gotta change...

The email system is completely separate and running. It does seem to be
taking a curiously long time to be delivered (for email) if you sent it
before you posted which was almost 20 minutes ago...
