It looks like I posted less of the questions the second time around than I
thought I had. These questions are to be answered only by atheists or
agnostics, no theists. That's what the aa in front of the subject means.
20. How do you as an atheist teach your children about God and
religion in general?

Answer their questions about it. The Bible is available for their perusal,
I'll just have to blow the dust off it.

I certainly don't teach about "God" but about the various gods (lower case,
plural) that people have believed in -- which are called myths by those who
don't.
It's an ongoing course in comparative religions/nonreligions.
A recurring theme is, "You get to choose when you understand all the choices
and the pros/cons of each."

By the time that most of our children were starting school, they had
had their little heads well stuffed with faerie tales, and myths from
as many sources as we could find, the bible included.
In fact, one of the girls came home in high disgust, one afternoon.
The teacher had been telling them the story of the Battle of Jericho.
Someone had asked if it was true. and the teacher said "Of course it
is, it is in the bible".
Jo, all six years of her, promptly jumped up and explained that it was
only a story, and that you couldn't knock walls down by making a
noise.
Didn't go down well, and Jo was told sit down, and to keep her
opinions to her self.
Jo aint very good at keeping her opinions to her self.
As she sat down, she "borrowed" a comment I had made about the same
story, "Bloody good job too, half a dozen kids in the street, and
there wouldn't be a house standing.
10 minutes in the corner, for swearing and being cheeky.
....And I nearly bit my tongue through, trying not to laugh.
Her parting comment, as she went up stairs to change was, "You'd think
a teacher would know better".
Which she had also "borrowed".

Teacher had no buisness telling it as anything but a story.

Pity she didn't say tha to the teacher, too.
The teacher had no business saying that.
Now she won't know when to take the teacher's word for anything she's
taught.

They need to understand what it is, the basics of the more common ones,
how and why it is so successful and how to be innoculated against the
brainwashing.
Religion is part of our culture and our history. When someone uses an
expression like "David & Goliath" or "Reading the writing on the wall" or
"an Achillles heel", etc. they need to understand what they mean and
where they came from. They also need to understand that myth is an
important part of our heritage.
So hiding from religion is not the answer. They need to learn about it
and learn how not to be suckered into it.

20. How do you as an atheist teach your children about God and
religion in general?

I don't really know how I would do it. Depends upon their age, of
course. I'd begin with clarifying the difference between belief and
reality and the possibility of believing things that aren't true. Then
I'd give them my interpretation of these beliefs people have and what
they do with them. That's the basic idea.
Then again, I have no intention of having kids right now.

I don't have any kids, but if I did, I'd try to teach them at an early
age to become independent, rational, and skeptical thinkers. I would
also make sure that they read early and often, and had a good education
in the sciences and history.

My husband and I have had several dicussions with our daughter on the subject.
We've discussed different religions, beliefs in the afterlife, etc. What we
have stressed the most is that it's HER choice to believe or not to believe.

I have children? ;-)
Seriously though, my future children I will tell all the options there
are, atheism, the the major religions. Then, they are free to make up
their own minds.

20. How do you as an atheist teach your children about God and

religion in general?

I allowed my kids to attend Catholic Sunday School. Their mother, my
ex, is catholic. When they started asking questions I answered them
truthfully per my viewpoint. Having grown up in a very religious
family and realizing about age 8 that I was an atheist it was
extremely hard for me to communicate this. I do not to most of my
family, my brother is the only exception. I did not want my kids to
be in that place where they could not question religion.
The consequence has been that my daughter, now 14, is a Buddhist and
my son, 12, is questioning everything and neither attends Sunday
school any more.
They are intelligent enough that given the information they will make
an informed decision. It may or may not be the path of atheism. I do
not feel it is my decision what path they take but theirs. I just
want them to be as informed as possible when they make their choices.

I have taught my daughters (on the subject of death) that some people
believe there is a place people go after they die. I've also taught them
that the opinion varies almost as often as you ask someone who believes.
And I've also taught them that many people believe in a god that has
jurisdiction over the world, and, once again, that this god's definition
varies as often as there are believers.
I've also taught them that I do not believe in such things.
