"aa Atheist Question #82" |
August 20, 2003
These questions are intended for atheists/agnostics
only. If a theist answers one of these questions and an
atheist wants to respond to that theist, the atheist
should remove the aa from the front of the thread title
to start a new thread. If the theist wants to be polite
and remove the aa first, that is also okay.
****************************************************************************
#82. If you chose burial after death, what message would you
want on your gravestone?

I have an aa number, but I'd have to look it up.

I would have people install those cool hologram projectors from the 80's
Mission Impossible, so I could float around the graveyard at night. Of
course with appropriate sound effects and everything.
Or maybe not...
What message would I choose? I don't know. Would have to think of something
clever. I might go for some simple message stating date of birth and death.

Possibly "No clergy were used in the burial of this corpse." Or
"Jesus, Allah, Buddha, I love you all!" (Just in case I'm wrong ;))
But seriously, I think that "I live on in memory" would be quite good.

I guess despite her smoking, Kesinee will outlive me and than I am
sure to get cremated. Or she won't and my sister or her offspring will
do it for her.
Nevertheless my mother's ashes were put in a box on a R.C. graveyard,
(with the text "after a life of caring" so the same might happen to
me.
I guess the text should tell one, how my relatives looked at me.
I guess if Kesinee has her way it would be "Kittung, Kittung"
(kittung is Thai for:"thinking off", "missing", "longing for")
It wouldn't be "my message to the world".

****************************************************************************
I am not going to be buried, because I think that my dead body would be best
used to either help someone live (organ donation) or help someone learn
(cadaver for med school/donation to science). However, if I *did* have a
gravestone I'd probably want it to read:
Wormfood *ALREADY*?
or:
I saw, I conquered, I came, I got her pregnant, she killed me, and here I
am.
or:
Don't MAKE me come back up there and kick your *****. Go do something fun,
stop grieving.

Years and years ago I ran across this brief poem by Swinburne, which I
feel captures perfectly what I'd want to say on my tombstone:
From too much love of living,
From hope and fear set free,
We thank with brief thanksgiving
Whatever gods may be
That no man lives forever,
That dead men rise up never;
That e'en the weariest river
Winds somewhere safe to sea.

I don't think that I want to be buried, but if I did have a tombstone
or some other memorial, all I would want it to read is:
Name
Born - <date>
Lived.
Died - <date>
Those who knew me would know my story, and as far as those who didn't
didn't, what difference would it make?

My plan is to be cremated and have my ashes planted beneath either a tree or
several rose bushes.
If I were to have an epitaph, though, I would die satisfied if it could be
"He made a positive difference."
My stepfather's epitaph would likely be
"Ok, I guess you *were* right about the smoking."

Message? Don't need a message.
I don't even need a gravestone. I figure I'll leave my body to science
or something like that. I figure even if I'm dead I can contribute to
society somehow.
Either that or I go for cremation and have my ashes scaterred to the
winds.

These questions are intended for atheists/agnostics
only. If a theist answers one of these questions and an
atheist wants to respond to that theist, the atheist
should remove the aa from the front of the thread title
to start a new thread. If the theist wants to be polite
and remove the aa first, that is also okay.

#82. If you chose burial after death, what message would you
want on your gravestone?

Burial? BLEH!
However,...

On Wed, 20 Aug 2003 02:05:52 -0400, a wanderer, known to us only as
Michelle Malkin <hypatiab7@comcast.net> warmed at our fire and told
this tale:
#82. If you chose burial after death, what message would you
want on your gravestone?
I'm going to be donated to a medical school, so no tombstone.. *but*
"Stranger please, lend an ear
And help me with my worries
Drop the Sporting Green here
When the Giants win the Series"
"I Got Away With It"
"Well, this was predictable."
"Visitor to my grave
From my far future
I know you know not my name
But let me reassure you
In my day I was widely known
Though not in history you've read
I was not rich or powerful
But I was damn good in bed.
(That's my story, and I'm sticking with it)"
"Failed my Saving Throw"
"Dead. That about sums it up."
