aa: Godless Snorkelers/Divers? |
Yo, yo, yo!
I'm getting into snorkel-diving lately and am wondering who all in
godlessville is into it, too.
Wednesday was my first time; all I did was paddle around on the surface,
staring down at the baitfish, hermit crabs, and one white-with-red-claw-
tips crab that had buried itself in the sand. It was waving a pair of
antennae, hoping to lure a fish close in for a dance.
So...anyone got some stories?

Plenty, but one damned useful piece of advice: buy your own equipment, the
best you can lay hands on, maintain it well, and use it instead of renting.
Even if you're just snorkeling. I had a day shot completely to hell in the
prettiest water I've ever seen - Belize - because I got lazy and rented a
snorkel and mask. Not being able to clear your snorkel properly, whether
because it's in bad shape or you're just not used to it, usually means
getting a lung/bellyful of water, in this case some *very* salty water.
"Puking over the high coral" may make for a good war story, but the
experience is, ah, "less than pleasant."

I think I paid $30 for the set--snorkel, fins, and mask. That wasn't the
best in the store, but it was far from the worst. Still a lot of room for
improvement, once get enough skill to know what'll work.

Nasty. I'm not looking forward to my first experience with that. Before I
go diving or anything more involved than floating, I'm going to get some
lessons (since I can afford it, now), if only to have someone around to see
me turn green from guzzling some seawater.

One of the advantages of lessons is learning tricks.
Get in the habit of keeping your tongue pointed towards the roof of your
mouth. You'll find almost no additional resistance and it will serve as a
splash guard and prevent inhaling water.
Even with the cheapest snorkel you'll quickly learn to stop breathing if it
dips under water.

I think that's going to be the one thing I'm most uncomfortable with--going
completely under, letting the snorkel fill up. That's one of the reasons I
was never a strong free-swimmer. I think I'll be practicing getting
over that this Thursday by ditching the snorkel and working on the ol'
"crawl" swim, focusing on breathing.

I paid $150 for my mask. Of course, that's because I had my glasses
prescription mounted inside the face plate. But this gives me 2
advantages. First, I can actually *see* what's around me. Second, I can
know for certain that no one will ever steal my mask. {;-)

You know, it's odd. When I started my SCUBA training, I experienced that
problem of misjudging distances while under water. I'd reach out and try
to tap my son on the shoulder and fall about 6 inches short.
The other week, we went out for a dive at the local quarry, and I had no
problem judging the distances for reaching out for things (and the kid)
accurately. I must be adapting to underwater life better than I had
hoped...

Cousteau reported this in "The Silent World". They noticed that the pictures
they were taking were not focused properly.
The camera sees the apparent distance just as the eyes do. Their brain
adjusted and they started focusing on the actual distance, the camera didn't
learn.
As far as I know the ability, once gained, is permanent. I took over tens
years off diving and teaching and when I started again the ability remained.

My parents took the whole family to Grand Caymen for a scuba trip
probably twenty years ago (ah, to be young again). It was incredible.
One day we went to Stingray City
(http://www.cayman.org/divesite/stingray.htm), where you dive in about
twelve feet of water and feed stingrays; they're like big wet puppies,
swarming over you and sort of sucking on you looking for food. You
can pet them as they swim by, as long as you're careful to not jab
your hand on the stinger. My mom was laughing so hard we thought
she'd panicked; she had six or seven rays trying to get at the food in
her hands. Another day I was feeding a school of fish, and a
barracuda came swimming up; it looked like an evil sentient missle. I
remember wondering at the time, do barracuda attack people? On one
dive, a huge grouper was following me around, looking for a handout;
that was a little spooky, because he was so big. We saw sea turtles
flying along an undersea cliff, swam through coral tunnels, watched
the dive master feed a good sized moray eel. The sound is really
cool, too; clicks and taps and such coming from all around. I had to
wait until I got the chance to snorkel at Maui before I got to see an
octopus or whales, though.

I'm a pretty experienced diver, with 48 dives in my log. My son and I
mostly get wet off the coast of north Carolina and South Carolina, but
we've been diving out at Oahu and Maui. The kid has a couple of dives in
the Bahamas and went snorkling in the Galapagos islands.
My favorite experience was a few years ago, when we were diving on a
wreck off of Wilmington. We were 60 ft down and I was happily checking
out the scenery when this huge shark, 6 to 8 ft long, comes cruising
past. It passed my son about 10 ft behind him, but he was looking in
another direction. Poor dope never saw it.
Of course, I was once too sea sick to be looking up during one surface
interval, and missed seeing a manta ray jumping into the air near our
boat. Oh well...

I was living in Tallahassee from 1995-1999. I miss it there :(
There are apparently some awesome springs and/or sinkholes near there.
There's one a few hours outside of town, near Live Oak. Utterly clear,
bone-chillingly cold water that looks only a few feet deep from the
surface, but the cave opening at the bottom is more than 100 feet down.

Of course, I was once too sea sick to be looking up during one
surface interval, and missed seeing a manta ray jumping into the
air near our boat. Oh well...
*huuuuurrrrrk!*
It never happened to me, but I've heard of people getting sea sick
under water, and barfing through their regulator. Ick!
Good thing I don't get seasick (I hope!). Looks like there's something to
that "don't swim for an hour after you've eaten!" saying.

I used to scuba, but kids and all cut into my time, so I haven't been in
ten years. The water's COLD off the SoCal coast, too!
I did have a few great dives off the Coronado islands (Mexican waters,
just south of San Diego) where seals came down to play with us.
When my kids are older, I'll take a class and get back into it.

I think I made it to the bottom of a 12-foot-deep pool once (and only
once); but my friend had to bribe me. He tossed a model of the orignal Trek
Enterprise into the pool and told me it was mine if I went and got it. He
even schooled me a little in diving--but no mask, no fins, no snorkel. I
was 11, I think, and I coveted that damn model. I took it home with me that
day!
Not bad for a kid whose main swimming style was still dog-paddling. :p
In the years since, I've never really developed strong swimming skills,
breathing technique, and all that. Now I'll have to get some proper
training.

I have _got_ to go back to Key West once I get some experience. What I
could see of the coral and creatures there was utterly captivating.

Lucky *****! Nobody would be so stupid with me around. They could
throw anything on the bottom of the harbor (10 meter deep) and I
retrieve it. In pitch black water.

My personal record under water without aqua long is 3 minutes 45
seconds. Probably could have trained to do it longer, but after that
record I found it enough.
Develop your muscles by swimming a lot. It will also improve your
oxygen efficiency, meaning you can stay down longer without more
effort.
Swim a lot. Do some simple exercises, like putting on your mask
underwater. Until you can do it sleeping. Swim underwater without a
mask. Get a sheet of plastic to cover up your mask. Swim blind folded.
Lean to put on and off all your stuff underwater (lead belt, flippers
and mask). Try it blindfolded when this become too easy.
For me it didn't came as second nature, I have always done it. Even
before learned properly scuba diving. For you it will be an acquired
skill, but something you can (and MUST!) learn. Snorkeling and SCUBA
diving are really fun, but about as safe as jumping out of aircraft.
As long as you know what you do, no big deal. Start to panic, and you
are dead.

mind you...

A: You can wear a rubber suit, and nobody thinks it's kinky.

Might be time to find a public pool for daily swims. I need something to

I bought a little face-mask and breathing-tube at my resort in Jamaica a

far one could drift away from shore in that part of the world, and still
stand on the bottom - keeping one's head above water. The barricuda and
jellyfish were equally amazed.

to top last year's "kayaking near dolphins":

One thing that struck me while I was just paddling along on the surface,

haven't had that feeling since the flying dreams I used to have as a kid.

As a SCUBA diver you can get even more of the feeling. You can cruise a few
feet off the bottom and move up or down by controlling your breathing.

Unless you own a boat, shore diving is what you get to do the most. I
used to shore dive a couple of tanks a weekend. Boat trips were a rare

Yeah, I remember that. It was more challenging in Cancun where the
water was deeper (maybe 20 ft.). What's wierd is the water there was
almost hot. Hot ocean. Yuck!
