Object: AA: Gonna look at some dead bodies...
....namely, the "Our Body" exhibit. It's on display in Mobile, AL for the
next few months.
www.exploreum.com
I wanted to go to the "Body Worlds" exhibit in Tampa back in '05-06...this
isn't the same presentation (this is the more controversial Chinese gig),
but it's still something freakishly cool and guaranteed to make people
around me uncomfortable ("Hey...have you ever seen what happens when you
section an eyeball?")
Woohoo!

You lucky stiff! (Pun intended). I'd love to see that; especially since I'm
studying embalming ;)

It. Was. Freaky.
First, the minuses:
--Too small. For the $20 entry fee, I was through the entire thing in
about half an hour.
--Music was too loud and not really appropriate. It was sort of Asian
new-agey.
That said, the overall exhibit was fascinating, both from an anatomical
and an artistic point of view. There were quite a few mini-exhibits
showing the anatomy of various parts of the body. For people used to
seeing the typical skeleton and full-sized replicas of organs, there's a
"Okay, I've seen this in--oh, wait, this is the real thing!" moment when
you realize that the dissected mannequin-like thing in front of you is
looking at you. Then you start wondering what this person's life was
like, where they'd been.
The preservation process is extremely successful--there were several
displays that still had a tuft of hair or eyelashes, for example.
Freakiest item: A head sliced vertically like a loaf of bread, with the
face and the back of the head as "heels"...each section is mounted on a
post, and all 5 or 6 of them are spinning slowly like a slow-motion Linda
Blair. The face is peaceful, eyes closed as in sleep...and then you're
looking at the inside of his face.
Overall, I'd give it an "8."

Hmm, that is a bit disappointing.

As I understand it, there are three such exhibits making the rounds. I'm
guessing that they're sized like Small, Medium, and Large--and Mobile
only rated the Small.
I got the companion DVD and didn't recognize _any_ of the displays in it
but maybe two.

The crematoria folks will grind them to uniformity if asked. Scattering, whether

We planted a tree in memory of my father, at Michelham Priory, a
stately home and gardens not far from the village where he retired.
His ashes were buried with the roots.
Michelham Priory was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1537 and has been in
private hands ever since.

mini-exhibits showing the anatomy of various parts of the body. For
people used to

I saw it in phoenix and it was amazing. I'm glad that many of the
bodies were athletes and not supersized fatfuck obese americans.

*nod* It's got me looking at the people around me in a slightly different
way. Those exhibits looked so _fragile_.

...namely, the "Our Body" exhibit. It's on display in Mobile, AL
for the next few months.

I wanted to go to the "Body Worlds" exhibit in Tampa back in
'05-06...this isn't the same presentation (this is the more
controversial Chinese gig), but it's still something freakishly
cool and guaranteed to make people around me uncomfortable
("Hey...have you ever seen what happens when you section an
eyeball?")

Woohoo!

You lucky stiff! (Pun intended). I'd love to see that; especially
since I'm studying embalming ;)

It. Was. Freaky.

First, the minuses:

--Too small. For the $20 entry fee, I was through the entire thing in
about half an hour.

--Music was too loud and not really appropriate. It was sort of Asian
new-agey.

That said, the overall exhibit was fascinating, both from an
anatomical and an artistic point of view. There were quite a few
mini-exhibits showing the anatomy of various parts of the body. For
people used to

The embryos part was also amazing. During the first trimester, embryo's
and fetuses are *tiny*. Stupid fundies are bitching about taking the life
of something smaller than a dropped fleck of skin.
Then there was the separated nervous system.
separated spine
separated circulatory system
The black lungs.
the slice of an obese person's blubber.
various kinds of cancer, bone breaks. Cirrhosis of the Liver

They didn't care about abortion until Roe v. Wade.

Then there was the separated nervous system.

Complete with googly eyes!

separated spine
separated circulatory system

That one was COOOOOL. A skeleton with a mass of red filaments.

The black lungs.

the slice of an obese person's blubber.

various kinds of cancer, bone breaks. Cirrhosis of the Liver

The DVD shows one display that has to be 20-30 feet long, from soles to
noggin. They took a body, laid it on its back, and sliced it loaf-of-
bread style, then arranged each slice so that you can see each side of it
clearly--looks like a few inches' space between slices, with each one
suspended in proper relation to the rest.
