AA: Have an mp3 or other audio player? Read this! |
To those of you who have mp3 players or perhaps also similar devices,
I don't know.
A problem has been demonstrated where touching a TV screen can cause
the player to discharge extreme volumes into the ear plugs. One
norwegian girl recently lost her hearing that way. Scientists have
been able to recreate the problem *EVERY SINGLE TIME*. The girl had
had one earplug in her ear while the other had randomly touched into
the TV screen, which is static. The static electricity somehow
superboosts the audio signal to an extreme ammount of decibel that can
cause tinitus, hearing loss, deafness etc.
DONT use your mp3 player while you touch potentially charged surfaces
of other highpowered (110/230V) devices! TVs, CRTs, LCDs, surfaces
with possibly or occasional electrical shorts and other things that
can experience shorts.

This is the original article. Can't find one for today or the test
they reproduced. It was on Norway's TV2 news at 21.00 hours If you
could register etc they have a web TV function maybe you could see.

You need to get your news from somewhere other than the national enquirer.
I bet if you looked a little further, you'd discover that the
story you babbled is an urban legend at best.
Hint: the headphone amp simply isn't powerfull enough to cause instantanious
hearing loss. Using static electricity to get more headphone output is
like trying to get a 60's VW bug to do 0 to 60mph in two seconds by
dropping an anvil on the accelerator pedal.

The news story has reported for several days now here in norway. A
girl lost her hearing because of an mp3 player. A renowned phycisist
reproduced the experiment several times on tonight's news on the
channel TV2 using a Creative Muvo mp3 player with accompanying
standard earplugs. He got shocked several times, and the dB meter went
through the roof.
The channel has a web TV feature, or at least used to but you have to
register etc.

I'm not saying it's the amp. Somehow either the earplugs or mp3
player, or a combination of both, is drawing on static electricity to
create a burst. The earplug and the TV screen somehow causes a static
shock or short. The short somehow overloads and transmits in the
player or earplug with an extreme decibel level.

I doubt the story very much. You simply can't lose your hearing from a
crappy little pair of headphones.
Headphones can lead to hearing loss if played at top volume for long periods
of time, but then can't cause instantious hearing loss.
The story is a load of ***** and any phycisist who'd report such
garbage is a quack, huckster, or both.

That doesn't matter. The static electricity hasn't enough energy to produce
anything but a tiny little click.

I was going to say perhaps the short was in the TV, but they managed
to reproduce the problem with a different TV and another but the same
brand of player which would necessarily indicate it's a design flaw.

That doesn't matter. The static electricity hasn't enough energy to produce

I was going to say perhaps the short was in the TV, but they managed
to reproduce the problem with a different TV and another but the same
brand of player which would necessarily indicate it's a design flaw.
I would suspect that the producers of the program learned their trade
from NBC's nightline. Can't show a truck blowing up? Then put explosive
charges on the gas tank!
A TV set's static electricity simply hasn't the energy to make a headphone
generate ten thousand times it's rated maximum output. To make a pair
produce as much noise as a gunshot would require a few hundred volts at
several amps and would also blow them to bits. A tv set isn't a taser.
Put a hundred thousand voltage static charge to a pair of headphones and
it'll drop to only a couple volts due to low impedance of the headphones.
Before even a few milliwatts of sound are generated, the static charge
will be gone.

made the light shine upon us with this:
The ear pods that come with the iPod are not capable of damaging a fly's
ears.

The iPod itself can churn out 115 dBs apparently. I imagine an
overload could seriously damage some people's hearing.

Perhaps, with a headset that can handle that kind of power. I tried
the ear pods under my motorcycle helmet. At full volume you can't hear
any music above about 60 mph. There are some headsets that fit in the
earholes that will put out up to 106 dB. It's not bad, but other
sounds like wind rush tend to make pitch unidentifyable. I'm yet to
try those noise-cancelling headphones.

I've worn mine only once, and that was just before I decided that I'll
keep a pair of comfortable ones around.

I have an iPod and I tried the experiment. Nothing happened.

The experiment was with a Creative Muvo flash player of a certain
model I believe. And Steve... why the hell would you WANT to try it?
