Object: AA Question about SYATP and Pledge
Maybe I'm over-reacting here, but I'm pissed about this. Please give
me your feedback. What would you do in my shoes?
Yesterday while leaving work (at a public HS), I noticed small flyers
on the walls of the school advertising for "See you at the Pole". I
have seen many various student organizations advertising upcoming
events in that manner and I rolled my eyes, but it didn't really
bother me. Then I saw a professionally made banner (about 3X5 feet)
and quoting some biblical passages and the SYATP's theme for this
year, "consumed" in big firey letters. Seems a bit scary and pushy at
the same time, but I guess it's OK for the school to allow this type
of advertising if it comes from students. As I left the building, I
saw that the digital sign, which only announces sporting events and
parent night, had an advertisement for SYATP.
I didn't pay attention this morning to see if the event took place and
what success it had.
Anyway, today in school, during the middle of a class, someone (I
assume a student) came on the PA and announced that it was "Pledge
aross America" day and asked us to all rise and say the pladge. This
was not announced to the teachers beforehand (which is not unusual at
our school), but I thought it was rather weird.
So I got home today and looked up the "Pledge across America" website
and the first thing that came up was that today is CONSTITUTION DAY!
An organization was asking schools to recite the preable along with
the president in a teleconference type thing. The pledge across
america was on the same day.
My questions...
Is there any reason that SYATP and pledge across America are on the
same day?
Why is my school participating in pledge across America and not in
constitution day?
Am I being too sensitive here?

Oh, I thought it was "Suppose you are the President...". ^_^

Write the school superintendent (not the principal) and complain that
religious non-school events don't belong on the marquee. Chances are
good that the principal (or whoever's in charge of the marquee) put up
the message without any authorization or thought that it's verboten.
Chances are good there'll be a policy statement at the next school board
meeting regarding it.

Our superintendent leads the (adult) bible school at his church (which
always cracks me up... adult going to bible school! ha!). I don't
think he'll see it my way. I'm waaaaay in the minority in this
community. I don't know how to go about feeling out the student
population to see if any kids were offended and if so, would they do
anything about it.

Don't mention anything about religion; just ask what the policy
is for getting announcements on the digital board, and who can
have their announcements, and what the process is. Their
policy has to treat all student groups the same.

Have you got an American Atheists state director in your state?
(http://www.atheists.org/state.html)? If so, have him send him a request
to stop on American Atheists stationary. I've found that it works
wonders.

The courts have ruled that SYATP is legal as long as the school is not
organizing it, it is done out of normal school time, and no coercion
is involved. I don't know about the banner. If the students paid for
it, and if the school would allow a similar banner from say a Muslim
group, a Satan worshippers meeting, or an atheists' club, I suppose
that it would be legal too. However, using the sign, school property,
to advertise the prayer meeting would probably not be.

It seems silly to me that the school would allow students to interrupt

have some explaining to do.

Constitution and the Bill of Rights are old news?

Why is my school participating in pledge across America and not in
constitution day?

There's no *GAWD* in the Constitution.

Am I being too sensitive here?

No.

I'm sure the kid had permission and it was probably encouraged by the
admin. It happened on a day that had been interrupted a lot with
standardized testing, etc. so it pissed me off more than usual.

It definitely has elements that the Nazis would have liked. They were

What is the point of this nonsense anyway? Some people are so into
meaningless ritual. Anyway, I bet more kids have toked up at 4:20
voluntarily than have said the pledge in these stupid, mass rituals.

I don't think so. Patriotism taken to excess creates nationalism.
Certainly the history of the last century or two has shown us that
nationalism can be disastrous. The fact that they're quoting bible
verses and getting special favors does not bode well either.

Its an organized effort to violate Matthew 6:5-6. This passage, in

I see, once again, modern christians agree with atheists that the bible is
an old, out-of-date tome that one needn't pay much attention to...

Am I being too sensitive here?

what the?????
the kids mentioned that class was interrupted for the pledge in the
middle of the day...but they never said what it was about.

Honestly I still don't quite know what it's about. I would have
thought that the teachers would have some sort of say as to which
interruptions we would like to participate in.

It seems obvious to me that some adult implicitly conspired with the
kids (or more likely their parents) to do this on-the-sly. It wasn't
advertised to prevent objections. "It is easier to apologise than to
ask permission." If they told you what was going to happen you might
have objected. Their way you participated and didn't even know what
you were participating in. Your soul is saved now. Praise Jeebus.
