AA: Twas the night before Xmas, almost... |
I have been meaning to post this piccy for some time now, but due to
slackness, have not 'got around' to it.
Two nights before Xmas, my sister heard the most almighty banging and
scrabbling on her (tin) roof.
Usually this is caused by either Santa or more often possums.
But she found out that it was large koala on her roof!
She took a picture of it as it was vacating via the top of a bushfire
shutter.
I looks to be about the same size as a large rottweiller, and in very
good condition.

Thought you non-aussies might be interested.

They are all over the place at my sister's residence.
As are wallabies and kangaroos.
(And friggin' possums!)
(Male) Koalas make a very loud noise at all times of the day or night,
if one imagines an asthmatic donkey trying to cough up a massive
fur-ball in front of a stage-mike with a 10,000 watt amplifier
designed for the Gratefull Dead, then that is about right.
Before my parents moved from their farm here at Finnis (circa 1995),
they had a breeding pair of platypus, and a "herd" of breeding
echidna. (All wild, of course)
Amazing to watch, but alas, no photos.

There *is* a stuffed koala nailed to the fork of a tree a few miles
away, honestly!
I sometimes pull over and watch Japanese tourists take photos of it,
and cringe.
It was nailed there by a now defunct tourist bus service, but is so
useful for it's successors that no-one had removed it.
A "guaranteed" wildlife attraction!
As you can see, the specimen offered is so fat that it bends the steel
shutter.
No-one is going to stuff a koala with sand to mimic that.
(Although, there's an idea...)

That's because it's not actually a koala. It's one of the little
known cousins, a drop-bear (Phascolarctos Humourius
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_bear). They are a carnivorous
species of marsupial they hide in trees and other high places waiting
for unsuspecting prey to walk underneath. As is typical of nocturnal
carnivors they have a reflective surface behind their retina, which
produces the glowing eyes in the photo (take a photo of a cat if you
want to see the same effect). You'll notice the upright posture and
relative alertness compared to the more common koala.
Incidentally neither species are actually related to bears any more
than they're related to donkeys. The drop-bear however is
considerably larger than koalas and has been known to kill adult
humans. Typically they aim to land just off centre of the top of a
target's head and hook their claws in to drag the head off to one
side, usually causing significant neck injury.
This one appears to have been caught off-guard a little, as it's too
far from the edge of the roof to be able to jump on passers by. And
just as well for our camera man. We used to get some where I used to
live. Their mating call sounds a bit like an opera singer being
strangled to death in C-major. Very annoying in the middle of the
night.

I always though they were cute, but that photo freaks me out.

Damn.
That was a little secret between me, and the Australian branch of the
EAC.
(Which does not exist, of course).
How are we going to attract tourist food for them now?

It's the eyes, I think.
The horribly loud asthmatic braying noise they make freaks me out more
than anything!

its route, then she straddled the track like she meant business, only
instead of smacking the train she peed on the electric rails and, well,
it's just a shame they didn't have a video of it.
I looks to be about the same size as a large rottweiller, and in very
good condition.
I didn't know they grew to that size.

Nope. I saw the aftermath. They had set the train up for my visit, but
when I got there, all I saw was a tree with broken branches, pine
needles *everywhere*, broken bits of ornaments and one flame point
Siamese who refused to come into the den and kept giving dirty looks to
the pile of train tracks that had been set aside.

Of course. It takes more than 110 volts up the back side to keep a
*real* kitty down.

Hunh?!
Did she pee on the transformer?
The tracks should be carrying something like 10 - 12 volts, iirc.
Ask my younger brother.
As a slightly sadistic practical joke, I attached a D-cell to /one/ of a pair of the output
terminals of my Lionel transformer, then profferred the unplugged-in power plug, asking him to
"hold this for a minute, will you?" and when he complied (hell, it wasn't plugged in, so what
could go wrong, right?) I connected the other output lead to the other end of the D-cell. I
guess his wicked streak was as strong as his impulse to punish, 'cause after the initial
stunned reaction, he was in awe of what an evil joke it was, and laughed like hell.
