Especially considering that in stores where those managers _are_ present,
about all they do is commandeer a shopping cart to use as a sort of
portable desk. They put the "collector"* and its paperwork, then follow us
around, standing there, not counting. We had one such manager who would
stand in the middle of an aisle and holler micromanagement at us--"Be sure
you hit [Control-1] at the end of every area! I need you to go ahead and
count faster, guys! Make sure you're verifying 100%!"

Too bad I never said it out loud. She got married and moved away a couple
of years ago--but damned if she doesn't come back for visits. She's not in
management anymore, but she's still a bossy lard-***** who thinks she knows
what's going on everywhere. A few weeks ago, at a J.C. Penney store, we
were right in the middle of the women's sleepwear department. I'm on the
wall. She's at the far end of the area, counting panties and bras. I can
see maybe a dozen open areas (each clothing rack is an "area" with its own
number). I'm guiding people over to these areas from where I stand...and
fat-***** turns and hollers at me: "You can count that wall on your own, you
don't need any help."
Fuh? Times like that I wish there wasn't a cultural stigma on kicking a
woman's *****, and that I was an *****-kicker. She's one of a handful of people
I utterly can't stand.
The worst one is our main area manager. She's the one all these other
micromanagers learned from, so of course they're all like her: she is their
queen. She's actually the best mountain-builder I've ever seen. Doesn't
even need a mole-hill. Everything's a crisis.
* Collector: one of our auditing machines set up to do nothing but download
data from the counting machines; once the collector's full, or after a
sweep of auditors in that part of the store, it's taken to the computer and
the data's transferred. From there, they can run a "range check" to look
for places that haven't been counted, or things that got missed, etc.

And soon to tell the inventory company to take their job and shove it.
I may stay on on the night team--less pressure, anyway.
Two jobs = blood pressure. Careful...

Yeah, but the night team's only working a few stores a month, very little
travel. Gas money :)
Point taken. The price of gas (currently 2.19 for regular here) is the
reason I started riding a motorcycle. I commute 70 miles a day. The gas
money saved has been making the bike payments. And the insurance is only
$280 a year. Add to that the collateral advantages of splitting lanes
(legal in CA) and the fact that it's just pure unadulterated mind-blowing
FUN! Heh...

Parts sales (AZ doesn't do repair work). I was hoping for a delivery driver
job (which would get me out and about, rather than being cooped up inside),
but I'll gladly take a parts-desk thing if it means escaping from RGIS.
Now I can decide whether to just cut my hours...or quit. It'll depend on
what sort of hours AZ is offering (it's part-time to start).
I was thinking about taking a night class in motorcycle maintenance.

I can recommend it, if only so you could monitor a mech to make sure he's
doing what he's supposed to. I hate like hell to let anyone else work on my
car, even someone I _know_.

One of the most fun jobs I ever had was delivering pizza. I wore out
three cars on that job (all three were old VWs). The fun part was the
tips. We'd usually get a buck or two, but every now and then I'd get a
joint, a line of coke, or a shot of whiskey. Sometimes I'm amazed I'm
still alive...
