LA PLATA, Argentina, Oct. 9 A Catholic priest was sentenced to life in
prison Tuesday for his role in Argentina's "dirty war" in which
thousands were killed or kidnapped.
An Argentine court found Christian von Wernich guilty of involvement
in seven murders, 32 instances of torture and 42 kidnappings of
leftist opponents while he was a police chaplain during the military
regime in the 1970s and '80s, The New York Times reported. A least
12,000 people were killed during the military dictatorship that
controlled Argentina from 1976 to 1983, the newspaper said.
