Well, we can look at all types of organizations and find bad apples,

but does that mean you throw out the whole bunch? I can give you many
examples of abuse by police, dishonest lawyers, doctors that have gone
bad, and so forth. Do we no longer trust the police? Do we no longer
trust lawyers? Do we no longer go to the doctor?
Of course not.
I for one detest any Correctional Officer who abuses his or her power.

We are placed in the prisons with the trust of the public.
A prison serves four functions.

a) Incarceration
b) Retribution
c) Rehabilitation
d) Deterrence (there are two types of deterrence - specific and
general)

A Correctional Officer has four roles

a) Security (always first)
b) Team Member
c) Manager of Inmates
d) Role Model

If the stories of the Correctional Officers you are talking about is
true, they deserve what ever happens to them. However; I can tell you
a great deal of the time such stories are fabricated usually due to an
inmate wanting retaliation and often times the cases are thrown out due
to lack of evidence.

There is a different world, in the world of the Correctional Officer.
There is also a Code of Ethics. I am not going to get into it, but all
I will say is don't judge based on the actions of a few.

Most of your
Correctional Officers are doing the best job they can.

I know the
prisons in California are some of the hardest ones to work in.
Especially Pelican Bay, notorious for gang problems. I know of many
Correctional Officers who are hurt on the job, hassled by the inmates,
taunted, and so forth. It's a job most can't do nor want to do for
obvious reasons. It takes a unique person to be able to do the job and
stay with it. Most don't last their first six months. I have been
doing this for more than six years. I have a brother who started as a
Correctional Officer in Washington, he has more than twenty years now
and is a Captain. He has suffered two broken noses, a stabbing attempt,
had urine thrown on him as well as fecese and blood. The threat of
disease is always high as well. But he is a calm person, able to
handle high stress and think quickly. The difference between a good
officer and one who can't handle it, is one who knows how to react,
when to react, and when to just let things go.

So don't judge to harshly, let the system deal with those who may have
gone wrong. Believe me when I say this, most Correctional Officers
want the bad ones out far more than the public does.

Same as with
almost any career where one may have to rely on another. They want the
bad one's out.
