New Book, "Freedomnomics" says Abortion Increases Crime Rate
LifeSiteNews ^ | 8/10/07 | Hilary White
Posted on 08/10/2007 12:37:58 PM PDT by wagglebee
WASHINGTON, August 10, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A book published in
June by a leading US economist in part responds to previous and oft-
quoted claims that abortion has been a significant factor in lowering
the U.S. crime rate. The book by John R. Lott of the American
Enterprise Institute, "Freedomnomics," answers claims by liberal
economist Steven Levitt that abortion, in reducing the number of
"unwanted" children, has eliminated significant numbers of the kind of
people who commit crimes.
Lott's 2001 study, "Abortion and Crime: Unwanted Children and Out-of-
Wedlock Births" concluded that legalized abortion has in fact
increased the overall violent crime rate.
"We find evidence that legalizing abortion increased murder rates by
around about 0.5 to 7 percent... Others note that the legalizing of
abortion might contribute to a coarsening of society that might itself
lead to more crime."
"Freedomnomics," is being called a conservative response to the
publication of a manifesto of liberal political and economic theory by
University of Chicago economist Steven Levitt and New York Times
journalist Stephen J. Dubner, which topped the 2005 New York Times
bestseller list.
"Freakonomics," claimed that "legalized abortion may account for as
much as one-half of the overall crime reduction" during the 1990s.
This claim was seized upon by abortion advocates, notably Dr. Henry
Morgentaler, Canada's most notorious abortionist, who claimed it was
proof that vindicated their claims and support for abortion on
demand.
The conclusion that abortion actually tends to increase crime rates
coincides with a study published earlier this year. That study
examined data on 237 low-income women in Baltimore and showed a
statistical correlation between abortion and incidents of child abuse.
Published in March in the Internet Journal of Pediatrics and
Neonatology, the study a showed history of abortion is associated with
more frequent acts of physical aggression toward subsequent children.

Wedlock Births" online:

About as well as environmentalists can account for the
dramatically
higher
sea levels, much warmer temperatures, and end to the most recent
ice
age
caused by so called 'global warming' before man could have had
any
impact
on
the planet at all.
Here is a simple thing to consider : the globe is getting warmer.
Let's
not
aportion blame or whatever, just consider it: the ice caps and
glaciers
are
melting thus sea levels will rise. It don't matter _why_ they are
melting,
they are and for very simple mechanical reasons, they will melt
quicker
as
they melt more. As the globe warms up the sea levels will still
rise
even
if
the ice caps don't melt, again, a simple mechanical process
wherein
warm
water occupies a greater volume than colder water. Along with
that
warming
comes climate changes. Again, it don't matter why its getting
warmer,
simple
mechanics will cause more storm conditions to occur, heavier
rainfall,
more
hurricanes and such, again, just because the sea is warmer.
Changed
climactic conditions will affect seasonal patterns which in turn
will
affect
agricultural practice. What used to grow easily in one area will
not
grow
as
easily any more, yields will be affected, too much rain, too much
sun,
or
not enough, it doesn't take much to throw things off-kilter.
Migration
patterns will change, some for the better, some not. That will
affect
entire
food chains, predation rates, insect numbers, all will not be as
they
were.
Some of that will impact adversely on the human presence, malaria
where
it
didnt used to be, and so on.
Again, don't worry about _why_ it is happening, just notice that
it
_is_
happening, like your house catching fire, you dont sit and have
an
inquest
into why it caught fire, you act to stop it burning down
altogether.
The
current attitude of folk like yourself is that you didn't start
that
fire
so
your house could not possibly be burning down. You smell the
smoke
and
blame
cows farting in a nearby field, you see the flames and say, 'Hey,
the
sun
is
bright tonight!'. Well, our house, this planet, is burning down
and
whilst
you may decide it is not your fault, if you want to have a house
to
live
in
tomorrow, or for your children to live in, you better start doing
whatever
you can to put that fire out. Stopping adding fuel to that fire
would
be
a
good start.
So what do you suggest? We start shipping ice cubes to Greenland?
Stop lighting matches.....
Feel free to turn off your computer just any time now.
Don't have to worry about that..... renewable energy source..... neat,
huh?
And it's free.
Really? The entire internet is operated by renewable energy sources? Care
to
produce a cite for that? Oh, and let's not forget the energy and
pollution
required to even build your computer. I suppose you're going to tell me
that
was all renewable resources as well?
Nope,
Then you are an utter hypocrite. Shut off that computer. It's not necessary.
It contributes to global warming. As you have said, we need to do whatever
it takes to stop global warming, yet you wont take even a tiny step towards
doing so.

That title just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? So
the
AEI
thinks
abortion
is to blame for all the world's problems. Big
surprise.
"We find evidence that legalizing abortion
increased
murder
rates
by
around about 0.5 to 7 percent... Others note that
the
legalizing
of
abortion might contribute to a coarsening of
society
that
might

lead to more crime."
So how does he account for the lower murder and
overall
crime
rates
some
20
years after Roe v. Wade? How does he pull that
conclusion
from
data
that
shows an inverse correlation?
About as well as environmentalists can account for the
dramatically
higher
sea levels, much warmer temperatures, and end to the
most
recent
ice
age
caused by so called 'global warming' before man could
have
had
any
impact
on
the planet at all.
Here is a simple thing to consider : the globe is
getting
warmer.
Let's
not
aportion blame or whatever, just consider it: the ice
caps
and
glaciers
are
melting thus sea levels will rise. It don't matter _why_
they
are
melting,
they are and for very simple mechanical reasons, they
will
melt
quicker
as
they melt more. As the globe warms up the sea levels
will
still
rise
even
if
the ice caps don't melt, again, a simple mechanical
process
wherein
warm
water occupies a greater volume than colder water. Along
with
that
warming
comes climate changes. Again, it don't matter why its
getting
warmer,
simple
mechanics will cause more storm conditions to occur,
heavier
rainfall,
more
hurricanes and such, again, just because the sea is
warmer.
Changed
climactic conditions will affect seasonal patterns which
in
turn
will
affect
agricultural practice. What used to grow easily in one
area
will
not
grow
as
easily any more, yields will be affected, too much rain,
too
much
sun,
or
not enough, it doesn't take much to throw things
off-kilter.
Migration
patterns will change, some for the better, some not.
That
will
affect
entire
food chains, predation rates, insect numbers, all will
not
be
as
they
were.
Some of that will impact adversely on the human
presence,
malaria
where
it
didnt used to be, and so on.
Again, don't worry about _why_ it is happening, just
notice
that
it
_is_
happening, like your house catching fire, you dont sit
and
have
an
inquest
into why it caught fire, you act to stop it burning down
altogether.
The
current attitude of folk like yourself is that you
didn't
start
that
fire
so
your house could not possibly be burning down. You smell
the
smoke
and
blame
cows farting in a nearby field, you see the flames and
say,
'Hey,
the
sun
is
bright tonight!'. Well, our house, this planet, is
burning
down
and
whilst
you may decide it is not your fault, if you want to have
a
house
to
live
in
tomorrow, or for your children to live in, you better
start
doing
whatever
you can to put that fire out. Stopping adding fuel to
that
fire
would
be
a
good start.
So what do you suggest? We start shipping ice cubes to
Greenland?
Stop lighting matches.....
Feel free to turn off your computer just any time now.
Don't have to worry about that..... renewable energy
source.....
neat,
huh?
And it's free.
Really? The entire internet is operated by renewable energy
sources?
Care
to
produce a cite for that? Oh, and let's not forget the energy and
pollution
required to even build your computer. I suppose you're going to
tell
me
that
was all renewable resources as well?
Nope,
Then you are an utter hypocrite. Shut off that computer. It's not
necessary.
It contributes to global warming. As you have said, we need to do
whatever
it takes to stop global warming, yet you wont take even a tiny step
towards
doing so.
Really, editing posts to make your reply look better, is your
argument
that
weak?
You admitted that it wasn't all renewable resources, and your excuses
about
which parts of the sum total are from renewable resources doesn't
alter
the
fact that some part isn't, and hence you are contributing to global
warming
by your own standards. After all, aren't you willing to take every
action
necessary to reduce global warming. Yet here you are wasting gobs of
energy,
increasing pollution, and requiring a whole pile of energy and
pollution
to
support your usage of the internet. If you're not willing to take
every
action to control global warming then why should I?
Because you are ignorant,. Scout.
Perhaps, and yet when I ask you to educate me with real facts, you can
only
advance me newspaper reports and opinion pieces.
Goddard Institute for Space Studies : Stanford University : American
Geophysical Union : American Meteorological Society.
yep...all newspapers.......
Maybe you missed the part where it was an article written by a journalist
who doesn't even work for any of these places???
If a reporter writes an article about the space shuttle and reports some
claims he was told by someone at NASA does that make his article a
scientific paper?
