Object: Abortion. Where I stand.
If you are reading this, Shitehawk, I hope it answers your loaded and
deliberately ambiguous question.
A woman has a right to choose whether she continues with a pregnancy
as soon as it is discovered and without delay. Her human judgement
should always be trusted as she is the person with the problem and she
should be supported in whatever decision she makes and properly
counselled by people who know what they are talking about, not
religious bigots, so that they can make an informed decision.
Nobody has a right to obstruct her in this decision as biologically
and as a matter of fact, the pregnancy is a foetus, a growing, wholly
dependent, non-viable, non-conscious organism. Right up to 28 weeks
gestation -this is a scientific fact. No amount of theological
conjecture can alter that.
Pregnancies usually become apparent at no more than 6 weeks gestation,
though confusion about irregular menstrual cycles or a lack of proper
education may delay discovery for a while longer than this. Early
termination can be done quickly and painlessly and nobody suffers.
That is as long as legal obstructions are not placed before the
patient.
The only reason late abortions happen with any frequency at all is
because a legal quagmire has arisen as a result of people who oppose
abortion on principle anyway, forcing squalid and dishonest
compromises on the system and being as obstructive as they possibly
can. Thus, late abortions are pretty nearly all the fault of the
anti-abortion lobby, who have also obfuscated the viability issue by
citing the benefits of modern technology in bringing down the supposed
viable gestation period below the 28 weeks where the central nervous
system becomes connected up and the rudiments of consciousness
develop.
Theologians simply do not have any place in a debate about how to run
a modern society, and an immense amount of human suffering is the only
possible outcome of them being allowed to participate in the
political, legal and medical decisions that have to be made.

Conflict over the exact will/purpose/nature of God cannot ever be
resolved, since there are no facts to go on.
