Hmmm. "Rope" is wire, not poly. "Poly line".
from dictionary.com:
rope: A flexible heavy cord of tightly intertwined hemp or other
fiber.
fiber: A slender, elongated, threadlike object or structure.
wire: A usually pliable metallic strand or rod made in many lengths
and diameters, sometimes clad and often electrically insulated, used
chiefly for structural support or to conduct electricity.
line: A cable, rope, string, cord, or wire.
So "poly rope" fits fine but "rope is wire" (and implying that;s the
only type of rope there is) is a fairly oddball usage of the terms,
IMHO.

The Navy doesn't use rope anyway. They use lines.... well
there is one rope, and it's called a 'painter' and is used
to tie a small boat to the back of a big one.

Then proceeds to tow it for almost 3 days in rough seas at five knots

Ahhhhhhhh, my last two years I was on an ARS. During the big drawdown
in the early 90's. We towed somewhere around ten ships to the
mothball fleet. Inbetween picking up various junk off the bottom,
weather buoy, F/A-18, S-3, Pilot's body, etc......... I was actually

Yes. And the sub crew would have been 'hugging the bowl.' We were
laughing our arses off..... :)
That was the first time that operation has been done. Later, the USN
made a tech manual about it.

Popularly known "square knot" is properly a _reef knot_, mainly used to
secure lowered sails. The true square knot is a decorative knot with no
practical use save for tying lanyards.

would be called a 'line' and not rope. Cowboys use ropes.
Sailors use lines.
Sailors use rope too. Steel cable is "rope". Anything else is
"line", until you get to rag boats.
I'll have you know I spent 10 years in the USN. I should
know what a rope is......oh wait.... I was never on a ship.
Never mind....
Lucky devil.

I spent 3-1/2 years on the damn things and then was told I'd have to
spend 4 more to get two years of shore duty. "Later," I said. They
were unhappy.

I was offered Diego Garcia or Adak Alaska. I got out. I was
even offered a $10,000 signing bonus.

It would have been a bit warmer there. I wanted either
Skaggs Island (northern san francisco bay) or the White
House Basement.

The Sequoia! A beautiful ship, a Trumpy. I'd hate to have
been the guy that left a sea valve open and sank it. It's
back on the East Coast of California. I almost bought a 55
foot Trumpy but it needed too much work.
I was in communications and the White House was the place to
be. Then I'd be ready for a tour somewhere in Europe; Edsel
Scotland or Rota Spain.
