Object: Absolute standards
I talk to you guys all the time about moral absolutes and of course most
of you claim there are none. I suspect that the reason for this is if there
were some absolutes the idea of where these come from might arise.
The usual arguments I get is that their is no consistent standards that
people or societies use in making moral guidelines. I believe this totally
misses what is might by absolutes.
The guidelines for moral standards is not based in laws that people or
cultures develop to control their fellow man. Moral absolutes are based in
what we want concerning how others judge or treat us.
It is quite easy to say that there are no absolutes because mankind
either says or does things that are not consistent throughout the world,
this is quite true.
It is another thing altogether to say that each of us don't want
*exactly* the same standards applied to us. Examples.
1. I don't know anyone who doesn't want respect, even if he does not give it
to others.
2. I don't know anyone who doesn't think they should be able to express
their view, even if they don't let others express theirs.
3. I don't know anyone who wants to be treated as a thing and not a person.
4. I dont know anyone who does not want to be free.
Now if we *all* hold even one of these standards to be true is not that
what is meant by a moral absolute.
It is held by *all persons* in the same sense at the same time. Since we
are not absolute beings and only have relative minds, whence comes these
absolutes.
The fact that we all treat others in ways that we don't want to be
treated does not show that there are not absolutes, only that we are
corrupted in regards to our own moral actions toward others, even though we
demand moral consideration from others.

I talk to you guys all the time about moral absolutes and of course most

Because there are none?

I suspect that the reason for this is if there
were some absolutes the idea of where these come from might arise.

SPLUT!! Enjoy. "... if ..."

The usual arguments I get is that their is no consistent standards that
people or societies use in making moral guidelines. I believe this totally
misses what is might by absolutes.

SPLUT!! Feel free to believe what you want. As for an absolute: the
moon is made of 40+ Gouda cheese.

The guidelines for moral standards is not based in laws that people or
cultures develop to control their fellow man. Moral absolutes are based in
what we want concerning how others judge or treat us.

SPLUT!! That entirely depends on the culture of the people in
question, their level of technology and a lot more variables.

It is quite easy to say that there are no absolutes because mankind
either says or does things that are not consistent throughout the world,
this is quite true.

Agreed.

It is another thing altogether to say that each of us don't want
*exactly* the same standards applied to us. Examples.
1. I don't know anyone who doesn't want respect, even if he does not give it
to others.

SPLUT!! You haven't been around much, outside the village boundaries
of Peanutville.

2. I don't know anyone who doesn't think they should be able to express
their view, even if they don't let others express theirs.

SPLUT!! Doesn't require absolutes.

3. I don't know anyone who wants to be treated as a thing and not a person.
4. I dont know anyone who does not want to be free.

SPLUT!! Welcome to my dungeon! My name is S. Yours is M, slave!

Now if we *all* hold even one of these standards to be true is not that
what is meant by a moral absolute.

SPLUT!! "... if ..."

It is held by *all persons* in the same sense at the same time. Since we
are not absolute beings and only have relative minds, whence comes these
absolutes.

SPLUT!! They don't, for they are not absolutes. Your line of reasoning
(actually the opposite) is faulty.

The fact that we all treat others in ways that we don't want to be
treated does not show that there are not absolutes, only that we are
corrupted in regards to our own moral actions toward others, even though we
demand moral consideration from others.

You want an absolute? Breathing is an absolute. I don't know any human
being that can go without it for even 5 minutes.

You arrogant little *****.

Time & time again it is you Mark who is the arrogant one. You are the one
who consistently uses profanity to bolster your elevated opinion of
yourself. It really just shows you lack of thoughtful debate.
