Abstinence-only sex education causes teen pregnancies to rise |
For the last 20 years teen pregnancy rates were on a downward trend in the
US. Recently they have begun to rise, with the statistics showing the
states which promote abstinence-only are the ones responsible for the
increases. Not just a rise in teen pregnancies but a rise in STDs including
HIV.
States that adopted the Bush-endorsed abstinence-only program were rewarded
with federal funding. It turns out it wasn't much of a bargain, the rise in
pregnancies and STDs have more than eaten up the funds in increased
healthcare costs. At least 15 states now will not apply for the federal
funding and will return to comprehensive sex education.
This is a particularly embarassing defeat for the religious right who were
behind abstinence-only. The program did not work and it increased the
health risks to teens instead of lowering them. That is neither moral nor
ethical, it is what you get when religious morality trumps common sense.

This should teach us to never elect a president that will run the country
based on his religion.
The country needs to be run on available facts and scientific evidence - not
pie in the sky!

• My guess is that W. does not believe that abstinence-only sex-ed works,
rather it was what Karl Rove decided he had to say to receive the
religious-right vote.

And, in other late-breaking news:

One fine day in alt.atheism, "Chom Noamsky" <e@t.beef> bloodied us up
with this:
For the last 20 years teen pregnancy rates were on a downward trend in
the US. Recently they have begun to rise, with the statistics showing
the states which promote abstinence-only are the ones responsible for
the increases. Not just a rise in teen pregnancies but a rise in STDs

bargain, the rise in pregnancies and STDs have more than eaten up the
funds in increased healthcare costs. At least 15 states now will not
apply for the federal funding and will return to comprehensive sex
education.
This is a particularly embarassing defeat for the religious right who
were behind abstinence-only. The program did not work and it
increased the health risks to teens instead of lowering them. That is
neither moral nor ethical, it is what you get when religious morality
trumps common sense.
Religious "morality" also forces gay social life into gay bars, where
some become alcoholics. It also keeps the non-religious (at least in the
USA) from bonding, as evidenced by a whopping 15% claiming "no religion",
and perhaps 2% avowed atheists. I know, I was one of the "no religion"
clique, until I found out that "atheist" is not a dirty word, as your
average Christian will have you believe. The out-spoken over-zealous
soap-box morons in this country have set an unprecidented precidence,
which the quiet sheep follow unquestioningly, and the rest of us are
truly screwed. If and when the majority in America begins to think for
itself instead of being led like lemmings, we will see justice and truth
prevail. Until then we will have failed prophesies like "abstincence" as
a means to stop teen pregnancy and the spread of AIDS. Idiots.
