ACLU and the Patriot act. |
NPR reported today that the ACLU has finally been able to publish
information about their lawsuit against the act.
Apparently it was *illegal* to give that information out.
So much for free speech.
Maybe 1984 should be renamed 2004.

In 1995 when 60 Minutes reporters were denied the freedom to report
something... all they could say was they couldn't say (sounds
familiar?), I felt it was just a matter of time, then.
Of course, they claim that the report was about how cigarette smoking
causes cancer (Big Newsflash?) and the tobacco companies supposedly
kept CBS from letting them report it.
Does that sound plausible to you? It never did to me!

The thing I find almost unbelievable about his statement is that he was
responding to lawsuits by the ACLU against a law that *openly* and
*explicitly* restricts our freedoms. How can opposing it be contra
freedom?

"Openly" and "explicitly" are relative. I skimmed the text of
the USA-PATRIOT act, and it reminded me of nothing so much as a
software patch: there was very little actual text; most of it was of
the form "Title X, Section Y is amended as follows: replace A with B,
strike C, insert D."
This may be a common way of writing bills, but it makes it
harder for a layman such as myself to understand what the law says,
since I first have to familiarize myself with the law being patched.
On the surface, it does look like a deliberately obfuscated law
(though perhaps, as I said, such writing is the norm, in which case
arguably the whole system should be changed: it would be nice if
ordinary people could read and understand the laws that they're bound
by.).

Here's an interesting article where former Congressman Bob Barr (R) says of
his vote for the PATRIOT Act: "I was hoping at the time that it would not be
used as a floor but as a ceiling. But it's been a taking-off point for
expanded authority in a number of areas. Perhaps most important is the fact
that the administration seems to be pushing its application as broadly as it
can in nonterrorism cases. And despite the assurances by the administration
that Section 215, which relates to obtaining records from libraries and
other repositories, is not being used, the fact is it is being used."

After ACLU Intervention on Behalf of Christian Valedictorian, Michigan High
School Agrees to Stop Censoring Religious Yearbook Entries
May 11, 2004
DETROIT - The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan today announced an
out-of-court settlement between the Utica Community School District and a
local student over the censorship of her 2001 yearbook entry. The student's
entry had been deleted from the yearbook because it contained a passage from
the Bible.
"While it is true that the Constitution forbids public schools to promote
religion, schools must be careful not to suppress the private religious
expression of students," said ACLU of Michigan Legal Director Michael J.
Steinberg, who represented the student. "In this case, a high school
purported to create an open forum for student expression, yet censored a
student's speech because it was religious in nature."

Bullcrap, They go after Christianity and religious freedom with the
fervor of a rabid dog. They are a bunch of communists like yourself.
Damn, you are such an insufferable jackass. If it weren't for the
ACLU, you wouldn't have the police read your rights, coerced
confessions would be admissible, illegally obtained evidence would be
allowed in courts, and what little remains of the presumption of
innocence would be completely eradicated. Wake up, and smell the Bill
of Rights, yahoo!
Now folks, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Soviet Union fall
apart a few years back? Calling someone a communist is amusingly
anachronistic.
Yes, the Sov Union fell apart a few years ago. Shrubco caught it and has
been installing it in the U.S..
So is calling someone a communist in Cuba or China anachronistic?
Pretty much - the former is a one-party social democracy, while the other
is a trading nation under authoritarian rule, just like China always has
been... ;-)

Good idea. That should make their hair stand on end, even
as they hide behind their pseudonyms as the cowards they
are. I belong to several groups (American Atheists, ACLU,
Americans United for the Separation of Church & State,
People For the American Way, MoveOn.org and more),
so I usually give a small donation along with my signing
back up every year. Plus I donate to NARAL and NORD
and a literacy program through my job each year. I doubt
very highly that Churchy donates to anything. It just isn't
the fundy way.
