ACLU sues for gays' benefits |
Why would any man need another man to provide him with health care
benefits? The advantage of gay partnerships is that there are no
children at home that need attending. Let each man provide his own
health care, just like single straight people do. This notion that one
guy stays home and plays "Donna Reed" while the other one goes to work
should not become a burden on the American health care system. The
people of Michigan (and many other states) have spoken; No gay
marriage. Stop seeking "special" dispensations just because your
different.
http://www.freep.com/news/mich/gay22e_20050322.htm
Despite marriage ban, couples want health care
The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit Monday asking the
courts to protect same-sex couples' health benefits in light of a state
constitutional ban on gay marriage.
In the suit, filed in Ingham County Circuit Court, the ACLU asked the
court to stipulate that the ban on gay marriage does not extend to
health care benefits for same-sex partners. The amendment, they said,
is ambiguous.
The ACLU filed the suit less than a week after state Attorney General
Mike Cox issued his legal interpretation about what effect the
amendment should have on health benefits. He concluded that the
amendment bans government agencies from extending benefits to same-sex
couples in any future contract negotiations.

Yes, it would. It would deny gays the right to marry.
Nope. Try again.
Okay. A Constitutional Amendment defining marriage as being between one
man and one woman would do the following:
A) Deny gays the right to marry their loves.
B) Deny fundamentalist Mormons the right to practice their religion.
C) Go against Christrian Doctrine.

A Constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between a man
and a
woman would not restrict or deny any US Citizen any rights.
Hey, a Constitutional amendment forbidding marriage between a man and
a woman would deny no one their rights -- as such would de facto no
longer be a right.
Good point. Imagine there were such an amendment and its dramatic
affects on society. Would just a little of this bad affect from
weakening traditional marriage be acceptable?

I'm not sure what "weakening traditional marriage" might mean.
If Bob and Nancy start having problems with their marriage,
I'd find myself quite skeptical of any claims they might
make that "Lance and Bruce made us do it".

'Destruction/weaking of traditional marriage' is right-wing chruch tract
rhetoric. I remember hearing the same titty wringing bigots in the 60s
scream how inter-racial marriage was going to 'destroy traditional
marriage.'
If Bob and Nancy start having problems with their marriage,

I have to laugh when I hear that *****. If that's the case, Bob and Nancy
already have some serious issues that have nothing to do with Lance and
Bruce.

More like after getting Nancy pregnant, Bob decides to break up instead

end in divorce. Bob believes it's because anyone can marry at virtually

Well, then, the problem has nothing to do with gay marriage and
everything to do with our "permissive" attitude towards divorce
and towards single motherhood. Things were quite different with
with regards to both these concepts when I was young.
And seeing as how society is currently suffering extensively
from both these problems -- assuming you indeed define them as
problems -- then I don't think it's actually because we MIGHT
allow gay marriage some day.
It's the het's doing, in fact.

Anecdotally, it doesn't. Statistically, children of divorces are more
likely to divorce.

I never even met an openly gay person until I was in my twenties.
How you doing finding those laws mandating fertility for marriage?
Anything yet?

If two guys get married, I still love my wife.
If two women get married, we're still devoted to each other.
If 23 circus acrobats decide to get married, it doesn't matter to us.

Yes.

I'm not talking about your marriage. Nor my marriage. I'm talking about
those who are going to become married and their perceptions of
marriage.

This is where I believe you are wrong and you start to approach a

When my wife and I got married, the divorce rate in the US was over
50%. That did not stop us. We wanted to get married.

If two women get married, we're still devoted to each other.

Oh, we're both bisexual and are part of the polyamory movement. We
deal not with one other woman, but several partners across three
continents.
If 23 circus acrobats decide to get married, it doesn't matter to us.

What minister? You can get married by an Elvis impersonator at 3AM in
Vegas! My sister's wedding was handled by our older brother, who is
not a minister (unless you count being part of the OTO as being a
minister), and you can get married by a court clerk!
Admittedly, poly marriages will require more tinkering with the law,
so I'm willing to wait on that.
