St. Louis police officers often say they feel as if people are looking over
their shoulders.
That feeling isn't likely to let up this year.
The local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, a frequent critic
of the city police, says it plans to arm residents of the city's north side
with video cameras to record officers' dealings with the public.
The activist group says the department often mistreats and unfairly targets
blacks and said it hopes the presence of cameras will act as a deterrent to
police abuse and result in smoother dealings between residents and police.

violation of his civil rights, in fact, it is probably a part of the job
description.
Wrong. Assault on a police officer is a crime as is assault on any citizen.
It might be a consequence of his job but it is NOT okay and the police
officer does have civil rights. A city police officer nearby recently sued
a citizen who shot him in the head. Only a criminal would say it's okay to
harm somebody if they are a cop because it's their job and they deserve it.

highway got pretty bad and there were law suits.
The bad cops lost. New superiors in the aftermath of this
mounted cameras on the cop cars to stop that sort of
abusinve crap. It worked. And it caught some citizens
who lied about being abused.
Moral, cameras are good. And it makes everybody have
to behave.
Andddddddd, cops often do get a bunch of bad appled who
need reigning in, if not the bad apples start the whole
barrel to rotting.
Often, the superiors are stupid and lazy and arrogant
and refuse to do their duty. It is good that the ACLU
is here to deal with it. Since obviously again
it is a case of refusal of un-American police superiors
to deal with the bad apples.
Since they won't the ACLU has to. This will do it to the good
of the citizenry, America, and the cops, who eventually will
have to clean up their act.
Which is always to the good of the good cops in a force.

start thinking about this. Behave or else.

protected and that the authorities, federal, state and

I recently saw a police car video where the officer dragged a kid to the
side of the patrolcar -- out of the range of the video camera.
Mysteriously, the cops personal microphone was turned off also. The
teenage kid was murdered with a bullet to the head.
It's time for ALL police to carry a belt-mounted personal digital video
recorder with head-mounted miniature cameras and microphones that CAN'T be
turned off.

No. Millions of Americans already work in areas being monitored by
cameras. A cop's salary is payed for by the public. The public has
the right (in fact, the duty) to monitor the police. An informed and
active citizenry was what the founders of this country intended (even
