Acts of God... Or human stupidity? |
According to the book Natural Disasters: Acts of God or Acts of Man?,
"people are changing their environment to make it more prone to
disasters, and to make themselves more vulnerable."
As an example, in overcrowded areas of the world the earth is often
stripped of vegetation, making droughts and floods more likely. In
addition, there are countless examples of people living in
disaster-prone areas who fail to act on official warnings

Our authorities have drawn up maps showing areas liable to flooding
now and in the future due to rising sea levels and this is now being
taken into account by planning authorities who can of course refuse
planning permission to build in unsuitable areas.
Anybody planning to buy an existing property or buy land for building
can consult the map and of course insurance companies also use them.
Nobody can now say they were not warned.

Same here looking over the Aire Valley. The Memwith Hill US spybase
(the world's largest) is just over the horizon on the other side so we
would probably have been the first to cop a nuclear strike with only
four minutes warning during the cold war, should the USA have been
stupid enough to start one.

The Army Corps of Engineers has repeatedly warned the Kansas City area
and
all of its suburbs that urban sprawl and paving vast areas of watershed
will only
increase flooding problems.
Combined with developers and city planners who make/authorize seaside
large developments, thus, for the US, we have more recipes for
disaster.

=====================
We also allow building in flood planes, then everyone pays higher premiums
for insurance after every flood.
