No he wasn't. The Nazi party favored Wotan-worship and Hanns
Hörbiger's Welteislehre or "World Ice Theory" more than it did
Christianity, and Hitler really had little use for church bodies
other than to subject them to the process of "gleichschaltung".

One of the points on the National Socialist party platform was that
the party was for positive Christianity. This is what it said:
"The party as such, stands for positive Christianity but does not
bind itself in the matter of creed to any particular confession."
Here are some quotes from Mein Kampf:
" But all that I heard had the effect of arousing the strongest
antagonism in me. Everything was disparaged-the nation, because it
was held to be an invention of the 'capitalist' class (how often I had
heard that phrase!); the Fatherland, because it was held to be an
instrument in the hands of the bourgeosie for the exploitation of the
working masses; the authority of the law, because that was a means of
holding down the proletariat; religion, as a means of doping the
people, so as to exploit them afterward; morality, as a badge of
stupid and sheepish docility. There was nothing that they did not drag
in the mud.
"At first I remained silent; but that could not last very long."
"And so I believe to-day that my conduct is in accordance with
the will of the Almighty Creator. In standing guard against the Jew I
am defending the handiwork of the Lord."
"Was not the Press instrumental in bringing in a state of moral
degradation among our people? Were not morals and public decency made
to look ridiculous and classed as out-of-date and banal, until finally
our people also became modernized?"
"It must be noted too that the attack on the dogmatic
principles underlying ecclesiastical teaching increased steadily in
violence. And yet this human world of ours would be inconceivable
without the practical existance of a religious belief. The great
masses of a nation are not composed of philosophers. For the masses of
the people especially, faith is absolutely the only basis of a moral
outlook on life."
"And the founder of Christianity made no secret indeed of His
estimation of the Jewish people. When He found it necessary He drove
those enemies of the human race out of the Temple of God"
"Thus another weapon beside that of freemasonry would have to be
secured. This was the press. The Jew exercised all his skill and
tenacity in getting hold of it. By means of the Press he began
gradually to control public life in its entirety."
Of religion he (the Jew) makes a mockery. Morality and decency
are described as anti-quated prejudices"
"Anyhow, the Jew has attained the ends he desired. Catholics and
Protestants are fighting with one another to their hearts content,
while the enemy of Aryan humanity and all Christendom is laughing up
his sleeve."
"the Jew trafficked in the freedom of the nation and sold our
country to the masters of international high finance. So in our day he
has succeeded again, this time by raising ructions between the two
German religious denominations while the foundations on which both
rest are being eaten away and destroyed through the poison injected by
the international and cosmopolitan Jew."
"The most devoted Protestant could stand side by side with the
most devoted Catholic in our ranks"
"The National Socialist Movement must see to it that at least in
our own country the mortal enemy is recognized and that the fight
against him may be a beacon light pointing to a new and better period
for other nations as well as showing the way of salvation for Aryan
humanity in the struggle for its existance."
Here is part of a speech by Dr. Joseph Goebbels, delivered in
Nuernberg on September 13th, 1935 at the Seventh National-Socialist
Party Congress:
"Almost without exception, the intellectual leaders of Marxist atheism
in Germany were Jews, among them being Erich Weinert, Felix Abraham,
Dr. Levy-Lenz and others. At regular meetings, held in the presence of
a notary public, members were requested to register their declaration
of withdrawal from their church for a fee of 2 Marks. And this the
fight for atheism was carried on. Between 1918 and 1933 the
withdrawals from the German Evangelical Churches alone amounted to
two-and-a-half million persons in Germany. The programme which these
atheistic societies laid down in regard to sexual matters is amply
charcterized in the following demands publicly expressed at meetings
and distributed in leaflet form:
1) The complete abrogation of the paragraphs of the law dealing with
the crime of abortion, and the right to have abortion procured free of
charge in State Hospitals.
2) Non-interference with prostitution.
3) The abrogation of all bourgeois-capitalistic regulations in regard
to marriage and divorce.
4) Official registration to be optional and the children to be
educated by the community.
5) Abrogation of all penalties for sexual perversities and amnesty to
be granted to all persons condemned as 'sexual criminals'.
"Truly a case of methodical insanity, which has for its aim the
wilful destruction of the nations and their civilization and the
substitute of barbarism as a fundamental principle of public life.
"Where are the men behind the scenes of this virulent world
movement? Who are the inventors of all this madness? Who transplanted
this ensemble into Russia and is today making the attempt to have it
prevail in other countries? The answer to these question discloses the
actual secret of our anti-Jewish policy and our uncomromising fight
against Jewry; for the Bolshevic International is in reality nothing
less than a Jewish International."
Adolf Hitler, 22 July 1933, writing to the Nazi Party (quoted from
John Cornwell's "Hitler's Pope"
"The fact that the Vatican is concluding a treaty with the new Germany
means the acknowledgement of the National Socialist state by the
Catholic Church. This treaty shows the whole world clearly and
unequivocally that the assertion that National Socialism [Nazism] is
hostile to religion is a lie."
Adolf Hitler, speaking in the Reichstag on 30 Jan. 1934
" Imbued with the desire to secure for the German people the great
religious, moral, and cultural values rooted in the two Christian
Confessions, we have abolished the political organizations but
strengthened the religious institutions."
Adolf Hitler, in his speech at Koblenz, to the Germans of the Saar, 26
Aug. 1934
"National Socialism neither opposes the Church nor is it
anti-religious, but on the contrary it stands on the ground of a real
Christianity.... For their interests cannot fail to coincide with ours
alike in our fight against the symptoms of degeneracy in the world of
to-day, in our fight against a Bolshevist culture, against atheistic
movement, against criminality, and in our struggle for a consciousness
of a community in our national life... These are not anti-Christian,
these are Christian principles! And I believe that if we should fail
to follow these principles then we should to be able to point to our
successes, for the result of our political battle is surely not
unblest by God."
Adolf Hitler, to Nazi leaders on 2 June 1937, as reported by a
correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph"
"We National Socialists, too, have deep in our hearts our own faith.
We cannot do otherwise. No man can mould the history of peoples or of
the world unless he has upon his will and his capacities the blessing
of Providence."
Adolf Hitler, speaking of the Winter Help Campaign on 5 Oct. 1937
This Winter Help Work is also in the deepest sense a Christian work.
When I see, as I so often do, poorly clad girls collecting with such
infinite patience in order to care for those who are suffering from
the cold while they themselves are shivering with cold, then I have
the feeling that they are all apostles of a Christianity-- and in
truth of a Christianity which can say with greater right than any
other: This is the Christianity of an honest confession, for behind it
stand not words but deeds.
Adolf Hitler, in Nuremberg on 6 Sept. 1938.
National Socialism is not a cult-movement-- a movement for worship; it
is exclusively a 'volkic' political doctrine based upon racial
principles. In its purpose there is no mystic cult, only the care and
leadership of a people defined by a common blood-relationship....
We will not allow mystically-minded occult folk with a passion for
exploring the secrets of the world beyond to steal into our Movement.
Such folk are not National Socialists, but something else-- in any
case something which has nothing to do with us. At the head of our
programme there stand no secret surmisings but clear-cut perception
and straightforward profession of belief. But since we set as the
central point of this perception and of this profession of belief the
maintenance and hence the security for the future of a being formed by
God, we thus serve the maintenance of a divine work and fulfill a
divine will-- not in the secret twilight of a new house of worship,
but openly before the face of the Lord....
Our worship is exclusively the cultivation of the natural, and for
that reason, because natural, therefore God-willed. Our humility is
the unconditional submission before the divine laws of existence so
far as they are known to us men.
Adolf Hitler, in his speech to the "Old Guard" at Munich on 24 Feb.
1939
If positive Christianity means love of one's neighbour, i.e. the
tending of the sick, the clothing of the poor, the feeding of the
hungry, the giving of drink to those who are thirsty, then it is we
who are the more positive Christians. For in these spheres the
community of the people of National Socialist Germany has accomplished
a prodigious work.
VOELKISCHER BEOBACHTER, 24 March 1933, Page 1

[Hitler's Speech at second meeting of the Reichstag of 1933, on
23 March 1933, asking for the adoption of the Enabling Act.]

"While the Government is determined to carry through the political and
moral purging of our public life, it is creating and insuring
prerequisites for a truly religious life. The Government sees in both
Christian confessions the most important factors for the maintenance
of our
folkdom. It will respect agreements concluded between them and the
States.
However, it respects that its work will meet with a similar
appreciation.
The Government will treat all other denominations with equal
objective justice.
It can never condone, though, that belonging to a certain
denomination
or to a certain race might be regarded as a license to commit or
tolerate
crimes. The Government will devote its care to the sincere living
together
of Church and State."
Hitler said in a speech in Berlin on March 23, 1933 "The Reich
government sees in Christianity the unshakable foundation of the
ethics and morality of the folk."
In a speech delivered April 12, 1922, published in "My New Order,"
and quoted in "Freethought Today" (April 1990), Hitler said:
"For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people. And when I
look on my people I see them work and work and toil and labor, and at
the end of the week they have only for their wages wretchedness and
misery. "When I go out in the morning and see these men
standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I
believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil, if I felt no pity
for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn
against those by whom today this poor people are plundered and
exploited."

Where did the SS get it's personel? Why was the symbol of the

Here are some quotes from Mein Kampf:

"In my eyes the charge against Judaism became a grave one the
moment
I discovered the Jewish activities in the Press, in art, in
literature and
the theatre. All unctuous protests were now more or less futile. One
needed
only to look at the posters announcing the hideous productions of the
cinema and theatre, and study the names of the authors who were
highly
lauded there in order to become permanently adamant on Jewish
questions.
Here was a pestilence, a moral pestilence, with which the public was
being
infected. It was worse that the Black Plague of long ago. And in what
mighty doses this poison was manufactured and distributed. Naturally,
the
lower the moral and intellectual level of such an author of artistic
products the more inexhaustible his fecundity. Sometimes it went so
far
that one of these fellows, acting like a sewage pump, would shoot his
filth
directly in the face of other members of the human race. In this
connection
we must remember there is no limit to the number of such people. One
ought
to realize that for one Goethe, Nature may bring into existance ten
thousand such despoilers who act as the worst kind of germ-carriers
in
poisoning human souls. It was a terrible thought, and yet it could
not be
avoided, that the greater number of the Jews seemed specially
destined by
Nature to play this shameful part.
"And is it for this reason that they can be called the chosen
people?
"I began then to investigate carefully the names of all the
fabricators of these unclean products in public cultural life. The
result
of that inquiry was still more disfavourable to the attitude which I
had
hitherto held in regard to the Jews. Though my feelings might rebel a
thousand time, reason now had to draw its own conclusions.
"The fact that nine-tenths of all the smutty literature,
artistic
tripe and theatrical banalities, had to be charged to the account of
people
who formed scarcely one per cent of the nation- that fact could not
be
gainsaid. It was there, and had to be admitted. Then I began to
examine my
favorite 'World Press', with that fact before my mind.
"The deeper my soundings went the lesser grew my respect for
that
Press which I formerly admired. Its style became still more repellant
and I
was forced to reject its ideas as entirely shallow and superficial.
To
claim that in the presentation of facts and views its attitide was
impartial seemed to me to contain more falsehood than truth. The
writers
were- Jews.
"Thousands of details that I had scarcely noticed before seemed
to me
now to deserve attention. I began to grasp and understand things
which I
had formerly looked at in a different light."

"Making an effort to overcome my natural reluctance, I tried
to
read articles of this nature published in the Marxist Press; but in
doing
so my aversion increased all the more. And then I set about learning
something of the people who wrote and published this mischievous
stuff.
From the publisher downwards, all of them were Jews. I recalled to
mind the
names of the public leaders of Marxism, and then I realized that most
of
them belonged to the Chosen Race- the Social Democratic
representatives in
the Imperial Cabinet as well as the secretaries if the Trades Unions
and
the street agitators. Everywhere the same sinister picture presented
itself. I shall never forget the row of names- Austerlitz, David,
Adler,
Ellonbogen, and others. One fact became quite evident to me. It was
that
this alien race held in its hands the leadership of that Social
Democratic
Party with whose minor representatives I had been disputing for
months
past."

What Hitler is doing here is not showing that he is devout but trying
to to show how this mythological construct has suceeded.
"the greatness of Christianity ...[arose from] .. unrelenting and
fanatical proclamation and defense of its own teaching.
A methodology he used to promote Nazi's. This does not equate Nazi
with Christianity but just used their methods as his model. Thus, his
interest in Christianity is not its philosophy but the ruthless
application and promotion of it.

It's still the same. A Christian is not one that carries a card in his wallet,
but a person who lives by the principles of the Lord Jesus Christ. And that is
"love one another as I love you". John 13:34 This is a total step upward from
the commandment to "love thy neighbor as thyself".

The Jews are most certainly invited. All are invited, even you. Will you

Accept what? Jesus was a Jew, dude. He NEVER converted!
Why NOT? Maybe you could ask yourself that question.

JOHN & THE JEWS
Theological Anti-Semitism In The Fourth Gospel
Janis E. Leibig
=20
The Jews: a critical investigation
No other New Testament writing has been accused more often of an =
anti-Judaic thrust than the Gospel of John. Its ambiguous replacement =
theme, its pointed arguments with individual Jews, and its attack =
against the religious position of Judaism all reflect the polemical =
stance of the Fourth Evangelist.
Scholars are intrigued by the Johannine use of =E2=80=9Cthe =
Jews.=E2=80=9D They note the striking number of times it is used in John =
(seventy times) as compared to the sixteen occurrences (Mark, six, =
Matthew, five; Luke, five) in the Synoptics. They also recognize that; =
while the Synoptic occurrences do not reflect in any negative way upon =
=E2=80=9Cthe Jews,=E2=80=9D more than half the seventy occurrences of =
=E2=80=9Choi Ioudaioi=E2=80=9D in the Fourth Gospel do convey a =
negative, polemical attitude. The reader is confronted not only by the =
frequency of the refrain, =E2=80=9Cthe Jews,=E2=80=9D but also by a =
drastically different meaning mediated by that refrain. It is =
John=E2=80=99s polemical usage of =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D which =
demands investigation.
The immediate impression conveyed by =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D is one =
of unreceptivity and hostility toward Jesus. =E2=80=9CThe Jews=E2=80=9D =
question and misunderstand Jesus=E2=80=99 words (John 2.18,20; 6.52; =
7.35; 8.22); they murmur at him (6.41); they disbelieve him (9.18; =
11.37); they desire to put Jesus to death (5.16,18; 7.1) and even =
attempt to do so with their own hands (8.59; 10.31; 11.8). In the Gospel =
of John the enemies of Jesus are simply labeled =E2=80=9Cthe =
Jews.=E2=80=9D Unfortunately, =E2=80=98this identification is so =
complete that the author almost forgets that Jesus himself and his =
disciples were members of the same Jewish people.=E2=80=99 Rudolf =
Bultmann remarks: =E2=80=9CThe Jews are spoken of as an alien people... =
; Jesus himself speaks to them as a stranger and correspondingly, those =
in whom the stirrings of faith or the search for Jesus are to be found =
are distinguished from =E2=80=98the Jews,=E2=80=99 even if they are =
themselves Jews.=E2=80=9D (7.19; 8.17; 10.34, 7.22) =E2=80=9CThe =
Jews=E2=80=9D conveys not only the degenerate nature of the enemies of =
Jesus but also the negation of the Jewish religion. In John 5, for =
instance, the Johannine Jesus addresses =E2=80=9Cthe Jews:=E2=80=9D
=E2=80=9CHis voice you have never heard ... and do not have his word =
hiding in you ... You search the scriptures, because you think that in =
them you have eternal life ... but I know that you have not the love of =
God within you. If you believed Moses, you would believe me ... But if =
you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my =
words?=E2=80=9D(John 5.37-47, RSV)
A key issue regarding John=E2=80=99s usage of =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D =
is the question of their identity. Who is this group of people who hate =
Jesus and are responsible for the organized opposition against him? =
Raymond Brown answers, in the Anchor Bible, =E2=80=98In general, the =
Fourth Gospel uses =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D as almost a technical =
title for the religious authorities, particularly those in Jerusalem who =
are hostile to Jesus.
The term =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D often functions in John the same as =
the religious authorities=E2=80=95the Pharisees, scribes, elders, chief =
priests and Sadducees=E2=80=95do in the Synoptic Gospels (John 18.28-31 =
and Mark 15.1; John 2.18 and Mark 11.27-18). Dominic Crossan agrees: =
=E2=80=9C=E2=80=98The Jews=E2=80=9D is most often restricted to mean =
precisely those forces in authority inimical to Jesus. He concludes that =
to accept it otherwise involves numerous contradictions in the text.
Nearly all biblical scholars extend the historical meaning of =
=E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D to include the Jewish authorities of =
John=E2=80=99s own day. Thus, =E2=80=98John indicates by this term that =
=E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D of his own time are the spiritual descendants =
of the Jewish authorities who were hostile to Jesus during the ministry. =
Yet, to reduce the polemical meaning of =E2=80=98the Jews to the Jewish =
authorities of either Jesus=E2=80=99 or John=E2=80=99s time is to miss =
the numerous ambiguities, the confusion of roles, and ultimately the =
anti-Judaic bias that permeates the Gospel of John.
Like Brown and Crossan, Reginald Fuller acknowledges a group of =
occurrences of =E2=80=9Choi Ioudaioi=E2=80=9D which are reminiscent of =
the conflict stories in the Synoptic. In these, =E2=80=9Cthe =
Jews=E2=80=9D take issue with Jesus for performing healings on the =
Sabbath (John 5.10,15,16)=E2=80=95a role usually played by the Pharisees =
or scribes in the other gospels. However, Fuller points out that in =
some of John=E2=80=99s conflict stories the opponents are actually named =
as =E2=80=98Pharisees=E2=80=99 at the beginning of the passage, but as =
the hostility increases they significantly become =E2=80=9Choi =
Ioudaioi=E2=80=9D (9.13 and 18ff; 8.13 and 22ff). He remarks:=20
=E2=80=9CThis shift from the =E2=80=98Pharisees=E2=80=99 to =
=E2=80=98Ioudaioi=E2=80=99 shows clearly that the picture of hostility =
was rooted in the pre-Johannine tradition and that it is the Evangelist =
who redefined the opponents of Jesus as =
=E2=80=98Ioudaioi.=E2=80=99=E2=80=9D
Fuller regards this definition of opponents as a polemical device which =
extends the condemnation beyond the religious authorities.
That =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D cannot simply be identified with the =
religious authorities is further substantiated by passages in which a =
similar polemical shift is operative=E2=80=95i.e. from =
=E2=80=9Cochlos=E2=80=9D (or =E2=80=9Cochloi=E2=80=9D) to =E2=80=9Choi =
Ioudaioi.=E2=80=9D This is exemplified in the Bread of Life discourse =
where Jesus=E2=80=99 opponents start out as a crowd demanding a sign =
(6.30), but by vs. 41 (cf 52), they have become =E2=80=9Cthe =
Jews.=E2=80=9D The term =E2=80=9Cochlos=E2=80=9D occurs through 12.34 =
and often vacillates between hostility and friendliness to Jesus, a =
vacillation which Fuller believes was part of the pre-Johannine =
tradition. Yet, the Evangelist has increasingly chosen after 10.19 to =
substitute =E2=80=9CIoudaioi=E2=80=9D for the =E2=80=9Cochlos=E2=80=9D =
of his tradition. By the time of the passion narrative, =E2=80=9Cthe =
crowd is always the =E2=80=9CIoudaioi=E2=80=9D and it is always =
hostile.=E2=80=9D In replacing the =E2=80=9Ccrowds=E2=80=9D of his =
source with his polemical terminology, =E2=80=9Cthe Jews,=E2=80=9D John =
indicts all the Jewish people=E2=80=95not just the =
authorities=E2=80=95for their hostility toward Jesus.
To concentrate all exegetical efforts upon determining the historical =
identity of =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D in John is to disregard the =
Evangelist=E2=80=99s intention. He cares little for individual =
identities; in fact, through his usage of =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D he =
intentionally obscures all identities and inflicts indiscriminate =
hostility upon all Jews - both of Jesus=E2=80=99 time and of his own. =
For John, the opponents of Jesus and of Christianity are =E2=80=9Cthe =
Jews,=E2=80=9D tout court.
Many scholars recognize that =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D functions =
symbolically throughout John=E2=80=99s Gospel and that it can only be =
understood in relation to the Johannine meaning of =E2=80=9Cthe =
world.=E2=80=9D For John, =E2=80=9Cthe world=E2=80=9D is a symbol which =
represents the realm of unbelief; it is the realm of darkness whose head =
is the devil, the prince of the world (12.31; 14.30; 16.11). =
=E2=80=98The world=E2=80=99 hates Jesus and his disciples (15.18-19, =
17.14-16); it does not know Jesus (1.10) or the father (17.25); when =
Jesus departs, the world will be glad (16.20). In the fourth Gospel, =
=E2=80=98the world=E2=80=99 is the totality of all that is not of God.
For John, =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D are inextricably bound to =
=E2=80=9Cthe world.=E2=80=9D Like the world, =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D =
are =E2=80=9Cfrom below;=E2=80=9D they do not know the Father and have =
never heard his voice nor seen his face; they do not believe in the one =
whom he sent (5.37-38). Kysar reflects on =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D as =
a symbol: =E2=80=9CThose human beings ... who cling to their pride in =
themselves=E2=80=95those human beings who cannot accept that =
self-understanding presented in the Revelation of God in =
Christ=E2=80=95these are the persons represented in the symbol =
=E2=80=98the Jews.=E2=80=99=E2=80=9D
The anti-Jewish stance of the Fourth Gospel is exemplified in the =
portrayal of the Jewish people as enemies of the truth, as persons =
devoid of spiritual insight (cf 3.1-7)=E2=80=95and, ultimately, as spawn =
of the devil. This portrayal is mediated through the Johannine use of =
=E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D=E2=80=95a polemical device which John uses =
both intentionally and indiscriminately to indict all opponents of Jesus =
and Christianity.
The indictment: the anti-Semitic potential of =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D
=E2=80=9CAll the learned exegesis in the world cannot negate the truth =
that there are elements not only of anti-Judaism, but also of =
anti-Semitism in the New Testament. (A. Roy Eckardt, The Encounter of =
Jews and Christians 1973, 126) Many scholars, in attempting to deal with =
the anti-Judaism that permeates the Fourth Gospel, have not come to =
terms with the theological sources of John=E2=80=99s polemic.
While one can explain the historical circumstances which influenced =
John=E2=80=99s treatment of =E2=80=9Cthe Jews,=E2=80=9D one cannot =
exonerate him from the ultimate responsibility of producing =E2=80=9Ca =
written compilation of clearly expressed anti-Jewish =
sentiments.=E2=80=9D
The =E2=80=9Canti-Semitic potential=E2=80=9D of the Fourth Gospel is =
sometimes obscured by scholars who believe that a careful reading of the =
context of these hostile references reveal that the Evangelist does not =
mean =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D in general, but only the authorities; =
for them, the =E2=80=9Ccontext=E2=80=9D protects the Evangelist and the =
Gospel against an =E2=80=9Canti-Semitic potential.=E2=80=9D The =
ecumenist Roy Eckardt responds to this approach:
=E2=80=9C . . while the context of any proposition is relevant when =
discriminate or qualified judgments are tendered, the context becomes =
totally irrelevant when indiscriminate or unqualified judgments are =
being made.=E2=80=9D For Eckardt and for many other scholars, =
=E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D belongs to the latter category: the Gospel of =
John again and again makes indiscriminate, hostile judgments against =
=E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D as Jews, and this is what is meant by =
anti-Semitism. The article =E2=80=9Cthe=E2=80=9D is as decisive as the =
word =E2=80=9CJews=E2=80=9D or more so. Thus, the =
=E2=80=9Ccontext=E2=80=9D is powerless in neutralizing the =
=E2=80=9Canti-Semitic potential=E2=80=9D of the Fourth Gospel.
Many biblical scholars believe they can exonerate John from the charge =
of anti-Semitism by interpreting =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D as a symbol. =
Thus, =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D represents not specific persons but a =
=E2=80=98typical kind of human failure to accept Christ.=E2=80=99 It is =
a term symbolizing all opposition to Jesus, or all human opaqueness, or =
even the general evil of the world. The logical conclusion of these =
scholars is the same: John=E2=80=99s term =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D is =
not anti-Semitic because it does not actually refer to Jewish people at =
all. Yet, this conclusion reveals a somewhat unsophisticated =
understanding of symbol. John Townsend reacts:
Using =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D to denote ... the whole sinful world is =
scarcely pro-Jewish. In such a case, =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D have =
become the epitome for what is evil.
Dominic Crossan recognizes =E2=80=9C=E2=80=99the Jews=E2=80=99 as a =
dangerous symbolic term... that might well be a root of anti-Semitism in =
the Christian subconscious.=E2=80=9D Born out of the collective =
unconscious of the Johannine community, =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D soon =
embodies an independent life within the text of the Fourth Gospel. =
Breaking out of its time bound situation, it takes on a timeless =
character and a sinister power whose evil consequences no amount of =
Christian love (cf 13.34-35; 15.12-17) can overcome.
John=E2=80=99s polemical usage of =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D constitutes =
a=E2=80=99 symbolic demonization of a people. That usage cannot protect =
the Fourth Gospel from the charge of anti-Semitism.
One last approach which obscures the =E2=80=9Canti-Semitic =
potential=E2=80=9D of the Fourth Gospel relies upon technical =
distinctions between the various levels of anti-Jewish attitudes =
manifested throughout history. Many ecumenists draw a legitimate =
distinction between =E2=80=9Canti-Judaism=E2=80=9D and =
=E2=80=9Canti-Semitism.=E2=80=9D Edward Flannery defines =
=E2=80=9Canti-Semitism=E2=80=9D as a purely theological reality which =
reflects Judaism as a way of salvation, but not Jews as a people. It is =
=E2=80=9Cintellectual in nature... , bereft of hatred or stereotyping of =
Jews, it is a =E2=80=98theological offensive=E2=80=99 against Judaism, =
which constitutes =E2=80=98fair and irenic polemics.=E2=80=99=E2=80=9D =
=E2=80=9CAnti-Semitism, on the other hand, always includes a note of =
hatred or contempt of the Jewish people as such.=E2=80=9D While many =
scholars have finally acknowledged =E2=80=9Canti-Judaic=E2=80=9D =
sentiments within the Fourth Gospel, very few are willing to label those =
sentiments =E2=80=9Canti-Semitic.=E2=80=9D
While it is =E2=80=9Ctechnically=E2=80=9D wrong to apply anti-Semitic to =
the Gospel of John, it is certainly not =E2=80=9Ctechnically=E2=80=9D =
correct to revert to =E2=80=9Canti-Judaic=E2=80=9D language. The Fourth =
Gospel far exceeds Flannery=E2=80=99s definition of =
=E2=80=9Canti-Judaism.=E2=80=9D It is neither bereft of hatred or =
stereotyping of Jews nor are its polemics =E2=80=9Cfair and =
irenic.=E2=80=9D Eldon Epp, who distinguishes three levels of =
anti-Jewish sentiments within the New Testament, believes that while the =
=E2=80=9Cdenigration of the Torah=E2=80=9D by Paul and the =
=E2=80=9Cmaligning of the Pharisees=E2=80=9D in the Synoptics have led =
to =E2=80=9Cpernicious consequences,=E2=80=9D the =E2=80=9Cvilification =
of the Jews=E2=80=9D as a whole by the Fourth Gospel must be accounted =
more heavily responsible for those consequences.=E2=80=99 His judgment =
is harsh: =E2=80=98It is difficult to apply to the Fourth =
Gospel=E2=80=99s anti-Jewish attitudes and to their distinct impact upon =
the reader any other term than =E2=80=98anti-Semitic.=E2=80=99
Thus, the theological turning point of anti-Semitism is found in the New =
Testament, and is manifested particularly in the Fourth Gospel. That =
turning point provides not only the distinguishing characteristic =
between pagan anti-Semitism and John=E2=80=99s polemics, but also a =
catalyst, a rationale, a theological base for future racial antipathy =
toward the Jewish people. Recognition of this =E2=80=98anti-Semitic =
potential=E2=80=99 inherent within the Fourth Gospel is the first step =
toward any resolution.

My personal take on the whole NT thing. Is that people
assume it is 100% correct, when quite obviously the
RCC picked and chose what they decided to put into it.
Which is one of the reasons Paul is the most recited
person in the NT, cause they had more of Pauls
letters to fill the book with than even the Gospels
of Jesus.

There are no gospels of Jesus.

JOHN & THE JEWS
Theological Anti-Semitism In The Fourth Gospel
Janis E. Leibig

The Jews: a critical investigation

No other New Testament writing has been accused more often of an anti-Judaic thrust than the Gospel of John. Its ambiguous replacement theme, its pointed arguments with individual Jews, and its attack against the religious position of Judaism all reflect the polemical stance of the Fourth Evangelist.

Scholars are intrigued by the Johannine use of “the Jews.” They note the striking number of times it is used in John (seventy times) as compared to the sixteen occurrences (Mark, six, Matthew, five; Luke, five) in the Synoptics. They also recognize that; while the Synoptic occurrences do not reflect in any negative way upon “the Jews,” more than half the seventy occurrences of “hoi Ioudaioi” in the Fourth Gospel do convey a negative, polemical attitude. The reader is confronted not only by the frequency of the refrain, “the Jews,” but also by a drastically different meaning mediated by that refrain. It is John’s polemical usage of “the Jews” which demands investigation.

The immediate impression conveyed by “the Jews” is one of unreceptivity and hostility toward Jesus. “The Jews” question and misunderstand Jesus’ words (John 2.18,20; 6.52; 7.35; 8.22); they murmur at him (6.41); they disbelieve him (9.18; 11.37); they desire to put Jesus to death (5.16,18; 7.1) and even attempt to do so with their own hands (8.59; 10.31; 11.8). In the Gospel of John the enemies of Jesus are simply labeled “the Jews.” Unfortunately, ‘this identification is so complete that the author almost forgets that Jesus himself and his disciples were members of the same Jewish people.’ Rudolf Bultmann remarks: “The Jews are spoken of as an alien people... ; Jesus himself speaks to them as a stranger and correspondingly, those in whom the stirrings of faith or the search for Jesus are to be found are distinguished from ‘the Jews,’ even if they are themselves Jews.” (7.19; 8.17; 10.34, 7.22) “The Jews” conveys not only the degenerate nature of the enemies of Jesus but also the
negation of the Jewish religion. In John 5, for instance, the Johannine Jesus addresses “the Jews:”

“His voice you have never heard ... and do not have his word hiding in you ... You search the scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life ... but I know that you have not the love of God within you. If you believed Moses, you would believe me ... But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”(John 5.37-47, RSV)

A key issue regarding John’s usage of “the Jews” is the question of their identity. Who is this group of people who hate Jesus and are responsible for the organized opposition against him? Raymond Brown answers, in the Anchor Bible, ‘In general, the Fourth Gospel uses “the Jews” as almost a technical title for the religious authorities, particularly those in Jerusalem who are hostile to Jesus.

The term “the Jews” often functions in John the same as the religious authorities?the Pharisees, scribes, elders, chief priests and Sadducees?do in the Synoptic Gospels (John 18.28-31 and Mark 15.1; John 2.18 and Mark 11.27-18). Dominic Crossan agrees: “‘The Jews” is most often restricted to mean precisely those forces in authority inimical to Jesus. He concludes that to accept it otherwise involves numerous contradictions in the text.

Nearly all biblical scholars extend the historical meaning of “the Jews” to include the Jewish authorities of John’s own day. Thus, ‘John indicates by this term that “the Jews” of his own time are the spiritual descendants of the Jewish authorities who were hostile to Jesus during the ministry. Yet, to reduce the polemical meaning of ‘the Jews to the Jewish authorities of either Jesus’ or John’s time is to miss the numerous ambiguities, the confusion of roles, and ultimately the anti-Judaic bias that permeates the Gospel of John.

Like Brown and Crossan, Reginald Fuller acknowledges a group of occurrences of “hoi Ioudaioi” which are reminiscent of the conflict stories in the Synoptic. In these, “the Jews” take issue with Jesus for performing healings on the Sabbath (John 5.10,15,16)?a role usually played by the Pharisees or scribes in the other gospels. However, Fuller points out that in some of John’s conflict stories the opponents are actually named as ‘Pharisees’ at the beginning of the passage, but as the hostility increases they significantly become “hoi Ioudaioi” (9.13 and 18ff; 8.13 and 22ff). He remarks:

“This shift from the ‘Pharisees’ to ‘Ioudaioi’ shows clearly that the picture of hostility was rooted in the pre-Johannine tradition and that it is the Evangelist who redefined the opponents of Jesus as ‘Ioudaioi.’”

Fuller regards this definition of opponents as a polemical device which extends the condemnation beyond the religious authorities.

That “the Jews” cannot simply be identified with the religious authorities is further substantiated by passages in which a similar polemical shift is operative?i.e. from “ochlos” (or “ochloi”) to “hoi Ioudaioi.” This is exemplified in the Bread of Life discourse where Jesus’ opponents start out as a crowd demanding a sign (6.30), but by vs. 41 (cf 52), they have become “the Jews.” The term “ochlos” occurs through 12.34 and often vacillates between hostility and friendliness to Jesus, a vacillation which Fuller believes was part of the pre-Johannine tradition. Yet, the Evangelist has increasingly chosen after 10.19 to substitute “Ioudaioi” for the “ochlos” of his tradition. By the time of the passion narrative, “the crowd is always the “Ioudaioi” and it is always hostile.” In replacing the “crowds” of his source with his polemical terminology, “the Jews,” John indicts all the Jewish people?not just the authorities?for their hostility toward Jesus.

To concentrate all exegetical efforts upon determining the historical identity of “the Jews” in John is to disregard the Evangelist’s intention. He cares little for individual identities; in fact, through his usage of “the Jews” he intentionally obscures all identities and inflicts indiscriminate hostility upon all Jews - both of Jesus’ time and of his own. For John, the opponents of Jesus and of Christianity are “the Jews,” tout court.

Many scholars recognize that “the Jews” functions symbolically throughout John’s Gospel and that it can only be understood in relation to the Johannine meaning of “the world.” For John, “the world” is a symbol which represents the realm of unbelief; it is the realm of darkness whose head is the devil, the prince of the world (12.31; 14.30; 16.11). ‘The world’ hates Jesus and his disciples (15.18-19, 17.14-16); it does not know Jesus (1.10) or the father (17.25); when Jesus departs, the world will be glad (16.20). In the fourth Gospel, ‘the world’ is the totality of all that is not of God.

For John, “the Jews” are inextricably bound to “the world.” Like the world, “the Jews” are “from below;” they do not know the Father and have never heard his voice nor seen his face; they do not believe in the one whom he sent (5.37-38). Kysar reflects on “the Jews” as a symbol: “Those human beings ... who cling to their pride in themselves?those human beings who cannot accept that self-understanding presented in the Revelation of God in Christ?these are the persons represented in the symbol ‘the Jews.’”

The anti-Jewish stance of the Fourth Gospel is exemplified in the portrayal of the Jewish people as enemies of the truth, as persons devoid of spiritual insight (cf 3.1-7)?and, ultimately, as spawn of the devil. This portrayal is mediated through the Johannine use of “the Jews”?a polemical device which John uses both intentionally and indiscriminately to indict all opponents of Jesus and Christianity.

The indictment: the anti-Semitic potential of “the Jews”

“All the learned exegesis in the world cannot negate the truth that there are elements not only of anti-Judaism, but also of anti-Semitism in the New Testament. (A. Roy Eckardt, The Encounter of Jews and Christians 1973, 126) Many scholars, in attempting to deal with the anti-Judaism that permeates the Fourth Gospel, have not come to terms with the theological sources of John’s polemic.

While one can explain the historical circumstances which influenced John’s treatment of “the Jews,” one cannot exonerate him from the ultimate responsibility of producing “a written compilation of clearly expressed anti-Jewish sentiments.”

The “anti-Semitic potential” of the Fourth Gospel is sometimes obscured by scholars who believe that a careful reading of the context of these hostile references reveal that the Evangelist does not mean “the Jews” in general, but only the authorities; for them, the “context” protects the Evangelist and the Gospel against an “anti-Semitic potential.” The ecumenist Roy Eckardt responds to this approach:

“ . . while the context of any proposition is relevant when discriminate or qualified judgments are tendered, the context becomes totally irrelevant when indiscriminate or unqualified judgments are being made.” For Eckardt and for many other scholars, “the Jews” belongs to the latter category: the Gospel of John again and again makes indiscriminate, hostile judgments against “the Jews” as Jews, and this is what is meant by anti-Semitism. The article “the” is as decisive as the word “Jews” or more so. Thus, the “context” is powerless in neutralizing the “anti-Semitic potential” of the Fourth Gospel.

Many biblical scholars believe they can exonerate John from the charge of anti-Semitism by interpreting “the Jews” as a symbol. Thus, “the Jews” represents not specific persons but a ‘typical kind of human failure to accept Christ.’ It is a term symbolizing all opposition to Jesus, or all human opaqueness, or even the general evil of the world. The logical conclusion of these scholars is the same: John’s term “the Jews” is not anti-Semitic because it does not actually refer to Jewish people at all. Yet, this conclusion reveals a somewhat unsophisticated understanding of symbol. John Townsend reacts:

Using “the Jews” to denote ... the whole sinful world is scarcely pro-Jewish. In such a case, “the Jews” have become the epitome for what is evil.

Dominic Crossan recognizes “’the Jews’ as a dangerous symbolic term... that might well be a root of anti-Semitism in the Christian subconscious.” Born out of the collective unconscious of the Johannine community, “the Jews” soon embodies an independent life within the text of the Fourth Gospel. Breaking out of its time bound situation, it takes on a timeless character and a sinister power whose evil consequences no amount of Christian love (cf 13.34-35; 15.12-17) can overcome.

John’s polemical usage of “the Jews” constitutes a’ symbolic demonization of a people. That usage cannot protect the Fourth Gospel from the charge of anti-Semitism.

One last approach which obscures the “anti-Semitic potential” of the Fourth Gospel relies upon technical distinctions between the various levels of anti-Jewish attitudes manifested throughout history. Many ecumenists draw a legitimate distinction between “anti-Judaism” and “anti-Semitism.” Edward Flannery defines “anti-Semitism” as a purely theological reality which reflects Judaism as a way of salvation, but not Jews as a people. It is “intellectual in nature... , bereft of hatred or stereotyping of Jews, it is a ‘theological offensive’ against Judaism, which constitutes ‘fair and irenic polemics.’” “Anti-Semitism, on the other hand, always includes a note of hatred or contempt of the Jewish people as such.” While many scholars have finally acknowledged “anti-Judaic” sentiments within the Fourth Gospel, very few are willing to label those sentiments “anti-Semitic.”

While it is “technically” wrong to apply anti-Semitic to the Gospel of John, it is certainly not “technically” correct to revert to “anti-Judaic” language. The Fourth Gospel far exceeds Flannery’s definition of “anti-Judaism.” It is neither bereft of hatred or stereotyping of Jews nor are its polemics “fair and irenic.” Eldon Epp, who distinguishes three levels of anti-Jewish sentiments within the New Testament, believes that while the “denigration of the Torah” by Paul and the “maligning of the Pharisees” in the Synoptics have led to “pernicious consequences,” the “vilification of the Jews” as a whole by the Fourth Gospel must be accounted more heavily responsible for those consequences.’ His judgment is harsh: ‘It is difficult to apply to the Fourth Gospel’s anti-Jewish attitudes and to their distinct impact upon the reader any other term than ‘anti-Semitic.’

Thus, the theological turning point of anti-Semitism is found in the New Testament, and is manifested particularly in the Fourth Gospel. That turning point provides not only the distinguishing characteristic between pagan anti-Semitism and John’s polemics, but also a catalyst, a rationale, a theological base for future racial antipathy toward the Jewish people. Recognition of this ‘anti-Semitic potential’ inherent within the Fourth Gospel is the first step toward any resolution.

JOHN'S GOSPEL OF HATRED
Hugh Fogelman et al
=20
=20
Of all the Gospels, John's Gospel has attracted special attention. Not =
for its insight on Christian theological ideas, but on its obvious =
hatred of the Jews and of trying to distance the Jesus movement from =
Judaism.=20
No other New Testament writing has been accused more often of =
Jew-bashing than the Gospel of John. Its deceptive replacement theme, =
its pointed arguments with individual Jews, and its attack against the =
religious position of Judaism all reflect the hostile position of =
John=E2=80=99s propaganda.=20
The Gospel of John was written after the year 80 C.E., 60 years or three =
generations after Jesus=E2=80=99 death. It was written after the =
destruction of the Second Temple and before the 2nd major Jewish =
uprising (in 135 C.E.) when tension was very high between the Romans and =
Jews because the Jews caused many Roman casualties and were not very =
popular during this period of time. They were also hated by the Romans =
authorities because of the drain of their treasury to put down the =
Jewish revolts. This was the atmosphere when John wrote his version of =
Jesus=E2=80=99 life. To have Rome accept his writings, John had to =
distance Jesus from Judaism. Therefore, John had to distance Jesus from =
"the Jews.=E2=80=9D
John started his anti-Semitism remarks right away in Chapter One by =
frequently using the word =E2=80=9CJew=E2=80=9D in a belittling way =
(contempt for the Jewish people). The NIV Study Bible tells that the =
phrase, =E2=80=9CThe Jews=E2=80=9D appear 70 times in this gospel, =
indicating that he and Jesus were not related to =E2=80=9Cthose =
Jews=E2=80=9D as compared to a total of just 16 in the three Gospels of =
Mark, Matthew and Luke. By using the phrase, "The Jews.=20
Even though John and Jesus were Jewish, John had Jesus say, speaking to =
the Jewish crowd: Your Law; Your circumcision; Abraham was your father; =
Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert and so on and on. He =
deliberately wants his readers to see Jews as unfaithful and Judaism as =
invalid and a part of the forces of evil and darkness. Notice how John =
links Judas with the devil (John 6:70; 13:2 & 27) which results in an =
evil triangle of "Judas - Jew - Devil." John continues the attack by =
linking the words "Pharisees, Jews and your father the devil" (John =
8:44). John then winds up his hatred when he links the "Synagogue and =
the Devil" as told in Revelations (Revelation 2:9 & 3:9 written by =
John). John's Gospel is obsessed with "the Jews." Only they are =
portrayed as persecutors of Jesus, disapproving of him, seeking to =
murder him and being blind to Jesus' teachings. John's hatred of the =
Jewish people and Judaism is shown in his constant negative attacks on =
"the Jews" as a whole.=20
The majority of times, whenever John had Jesus say the phrase "the =
Jews.=E2=80=9D he had Jesus mean the entire Jewish population showing =
his ill will toward the entire nation of Israel. The use of the =
generalizing description, "the Jews.=E2=80=9D shows the deliberate =
effort by John to condemn the entire Jewish people in the eyes of all =
who would read his writings. He turned the story of Jesus=E2=80=99 =
natural conflict with the Romans into his own personal hatred of Jews =
and by writing in a bias manor, attributed it to Jesus. John hated =
=E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D for rejecting Jesus and because the Romans =
also hated them, it justified his prejudice and bias. In John=E2=80=99s =
mind, all Jewish people were bad, as was their religion.
The immediate impression given by =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D is one of =
hostility toward Jesus. =E2=80=9CThe Jews:=E2=80=9D=20
question and misunderstand Jesus' words (John 2.18,20; 6.52; 7.35; =
8.22),=20
they murmur at him (6.41);=20
they disbelieve him (9.18; 11.37);=20
they desire to put Jesus to death (5.16,18; 7.1) and even attempt to do =
so with their own hands (8.59; 10.31; 11.8).=20
In the Gospel of John the enemies of Jesus are simply labeled =
=E2=80=9Cthe Jews.=E2=80=9D=20
Unfortunately, this identification is so complete that the author, =
John, almost forgets that Jesus himself and his disciples were members =
of the same Jewish people. Rudolf Bultmann remarks: =E2=80=9CThe Jews =
are spoken of as an alien people. Jesus himself speaks to them as a =
stranger and correspondingly, those in whom the stirrings of faith or =
the search for Jesus are to be found are distinguished from 'the Jews,' =
even if they are themselves Jews=E2=80=9D (7.19; 8.17; 10.34, 7.22). =
=E2=80=9CThe Jews=E2=80=9D is designed to convey, not only a degenerate =
nature of the enemies of Jesus, but also the negation of the Jewish =
religion. In John 5, for instance, John had Jesus saying to =E2=80=9Cthe =
Jews:=E2=80=9D "His voice you have never heard ... and do not have his =
word hiding in you. You search the scriptures, because you think that in =
them you have eternal life ... but I know that you have not the love of =
God within you. If you believed Moses, you would believe me ... But if =
you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words? (John =
5.37-47, RSV)
The term =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D often functions in John the same as =
the religious authorities=E2=80=95the Pharisees, scribes, elders, chief =
priests and Sadducees=E2=80=95do in the Synoptic Gospels (John 18.28-31 =
and Mark 15.1; John 2.18 and Mark 11.27-18). Dominic Crossan agrees: =
"'The Jews" is most often restricted to mean precisely those forces in =
authority inimical to Jesus.=E2=80=9D Crossan concludes that '=E2=80=9Do =
accept it otherwise involves numerous contradictions in the =
text.=E2=80=9D Nearly all biblical scholars extend the historical =
meaning of =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D to include the Jewish authorities =
of John's own day. Thus, John indicates by this term that =E2=80=9Cthe =
Jews=E2=80=9D of his own time are the spiritual descendants of the =
Jewish authorities who were hostile to Jesus during the ministry. Yet, =
to reduce the unfriendly meaning of =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D to the =
Jewish authorities of either Jesus' or John's time is to miss the =
numerous play on words, the confusion of roles, and ultimately the =
anti-Judaic bias that saturates the Gospel of John.
Another example of John=E2=80=99s attitude towards Judaism, which the =
King James Version helped convey, had John say; =E2=80=9CAnd the =
Jew=E2=80=99s passover was at hand=E2=80=9D (John 2:13). How crude! The =
KJV constantly quotes John using derogatory phrases. Notice the small =
=E2=80=9Cp=E2=80=9D in Passover which tells of one of the most important =
Jewish holidays. It would be like writing about Easter and Christmas =
using small letters E & C. But, the NIV Study Guild and the Living =
Bible both soften John=E2=80=99s message to; =E2=80=9CWhen it was almost =
time for the Jewish Passover (notice the capital =E2=80=9CP=E2=80=9D). =
John used the words they and them very effectively throughout his =
gospel, showing that he was writing only about the Jews, the enemies of =
Rome. He had Jesus saying; =E2=80=9Cfor they hated me without cause =
(John 15:25).=E2=80=9D=20
I find it strange that none of the four gospels wrote that the Romans =
ever =E2=80=9Chated=E2=80=9D Jesus, only the Jews. The constant =
reference to =E2=80=9CThe Jews=E2=80=9D by Jesus or the Apostle John is =
most unnatural, for both were themselves Jews. Unless they were trying =
to separate themselves from the =E2=80=9Cbad guys.=E2=80=9D For =
example, in John 2:18 =E2=80=9CThen answered THE JEWS=E2=80=9D; in 2:20 =
=E2=80=9CTHEN SAID THE JEWS=E2=80=9D; in 5:10; =E2=80=9CTHE =
JEWS=E2=80=9D; in 5:15-16 & 6:4 and 7:1 just to name a few. In the =
other gospels we hear of certain groups like the Pharisees, the =
Sadducees or the Scribes, but never are all Jesus=E2=80=99 countrymen =
lumped together in a single category as =E2=80=9Cthe Jews.=E2=80=9D I =
doubt if Jesus would have said all the words that John said he did. =
However, with the mighty stroke of the pen, John declared that it =
wasn=E2=80=99t the Roman world who hated Jesus, but the Jews themselves, =
making the Jews the bad guys and by not mentioning Rome, making the =
Romans the good guys.
More than half the seventy incidents in John=E2=80=99s Gospel do convey =
a negative, hostile attitude. The reader is confronted not only by the =
frequency of the refrain, =E2=80=9Cthe Jews,=E2=80=9D but also by a =
drastically different meaning throw in by that theme. It is John's =
antagonistic usage of =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D which must be examined. =
Over the last twenty years a growing body of Christian opinion has =
suggested that John's gospel has done more to hurt the Jews than any =
other Christian writings as it spread anti-Semitic hatred. Many biblical =
scholars believe they can exonerate John from the charge of =
anti-Semitism by interpreting =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D as a symbol. =
Thus, =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D represents not specific persons but a =
'typical kind of human failure to accept Christ.' It is a term =
symbolizing all opposition to Jesus, or all human opaqueness, or even =
the general evil of the world. The logical conclusion of these scholars =
is the same: John's term =E2=80=9Cthe Jews=E2=80=9D is not anti-Semitic =
because it does not actually refer to Jewish people at all. Yet, this =
conclusion reveals an unsophisticated understanding of symbolism. John =
Townsend reacts: =E2=80=9CUsing =E2=80=98the Jews=E2=80=99 to denote ... =
the whole sinful world is scarcely pro-Jewish. In such a case, =
=E2=80=98the Jews=E2=80=99 have become the epitome for what is =
evil.=E2=80=9D
John's Gospel abolishes what is sacred to Judaism and replaces it with =
"Christ.=E2=80=9D Everything that was held to be important to the Jew =
was dismissed as insignificant. According to John, Jesus replaces the =
Temple, the Law and Israel itself, ergo Judaism. For two thousand years, =
the Church has claimed to be the "New Israel.=E2=80=9D According to =
John, there is no room left for Judaism=E2=80=95that leaves readers to =
conclude that Judaism is obsolete and therefore Jews are also obsolete. =
The Early Christian Church picked up on this and anti-Semitism jumped =
into the New Testament. The Early Church Fathers found it to be the best =
source of anti-Jewish quotations in the New Testament. John's Jesus =
portrays Christians as the beneficiaries of all that is positive and =
good, such as light, truth, spirit and life, while, in contrast, John's =
Jesus had the Jews belong to the realm of Satan, death, falsehood, =
devils and darkness.=20
This had a tremendously negative impact, which Hitler and the Nazis =
incorporated into their anti-Semitic propaganda. Because Germany was =
almost half Catholic and Protestant, Because of the teachings in the =
New Testament, the German populace already had negative feelings towards =
the Jews before Hitler, making it easy for the Nazi regime to make Jews =
the =E2=80=9Cscapegoat.=E2=80=9D I wonder where Nazi leader, Julius =
Streicher got his idea when he recommended "the extermination of that =
people whose father is the Devil.=E2=80=9D Modern day scholars of all =
religions see "the Jews=E2=80=9D or "those Jews" as generally used in =
the Gospel of John as an anti-Semitic message. Because of John's =
writings (along with the writers of the New Testament), this is exactly =
how Christian Europe understood the contents of this Gospel and the =
other Gospels throughout the centuries, up to the Holocaust. After all, =
Hitler said he was only doing what the New Testament directed him to do. =
Even one of the four leaders of the Nazis during the Nuremberg War =
Trials in 1946 said the same thing. They were only getting rid of the =
enemies of Jesus.
Modern Christians, who are now using their brains instead of emotions, =
are trying to figure out how the Holocaust even happened. How could have =
good church-going people had turned their backs on the evil surrounding =
them? For example: Dr. Florenza, Professor of New Testament Studies, in =
his book The Holocaust as Interruption writes: "Christian biblical =
theology must recognize that its articulation of anti-Judaism in the New =
Testament generated the unspeakable suffering of the Holocaust." Dr. =
Eckhardt, a Methodist minister wrote: "New Testament - the defamation of =
the Jewish people - constitutes in and of itself an incitement to =
corporate murder.=E2=80=9D In his book, Long Night's Journey into Day, =
he makes specific reference to the Holocaust as an example.=20
Professor David Efroymson, Chairman of the Dept. of Religion at a =
leading Catholic university, in 1986 wrote in the Philadelphia Enquirer =
that there is a direct line from the New Testament "to the =
Holocaust.=E2=80=9D =20
Reverend James Parkes, a UK Christian who has done more than most to =
further the cause of Jewish-Christian understanding writes in his book =
Anti-Semitism and the Foundations of Christianity: "It is dishonest =
henceforth to refuse to face the fact that the basic root of modern =
anti-Semitism lies squarely in the Gospels and the rest of the New =
Testament.=E2=80=9D
John turned Jesus=E2=80=99 natural conflict with the Romans into his =
own hatred of Jews and by writing in a bias manor, made it attributed to =
Jesus. He put words into Jesus=E2=80=99 mouth and twisted events in =
order to support doctrines held by the Christian Church in his time. =
John was consumed with the idea of Jesus=E2=80=99 being God. John hated =
the Jews for rejecting Jesus. He justified his prejudice and bias, =
because the Romans also hated the Jews. In his mind, all Jews were bad. =
Little did the New Testament writers
