Africans denied Visas to attend AAI convention |
Two members of the AAI board of directors who were planning to travel from
Cameroon to present at the Atheist Alliance Convention in Los Angeles and
later at the Appignani Bioethics Center, have been denied Visas, and they
apparently were not told why. It has yet to be determined if the denial
is legitimate or possibly due to the fact that they were to speak to
atheists group.
Information about the conference is here:
http://www.atheistalliance.org
Please call your senators and ask for an explanation: Why were Mbom,
Pierre Alex and Boum, Ndop Gustave denied visas to travel to the United
States and meet with atheist groups?
Please ask freethought groups of which you may be a member to do the same.
You can get contact information for your senators from
http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

Oh, really?
What makes you think that this denial is, therefore, OBVIOUSLY the result of
their atheism ???

Where in that message do you find "OBVIOUSLY"? It very clearly
states: "It has yet to be determined if the denial is legitimate or
possibly due to the fact that they were to speak to [an] atheists

What is it about "possibly" you do not understand?

If there was no reason given, then your two options are silly. "Yet to be
determined if the denial is legitimate or possibly due to the fact that they
were to speak to [an]atheists group". This, in the face of the fact that NO
REASON WAS GIVEN AT ALL, (evidently) means that there is NO REASON to assume
that any particular reason, such as the intent to speak to a given group,
was part of it. None. I'm certain that these two men were going to do other
things while here. Why not speculate that the reason might have been their
intent to eat at Lucky Moe's Chinese and Pizza place after the meeting? Why
automatically jump to the idea that it was religious persecution?
Sheesh.

No? then why the question as to whether it was 'legitimate' or could it be
because they were coming to speak to an atheist group? The conclusion
jumping is implicit in the question.
I notice, for instance, that the question was not whether it was
'legitimate' or whether it could be because they were going to Hertz rent a
car for transportation, or were going to stay at the Holiday Inn, or were
going to shop while they were here, or whether they were going to vist a
certain university...All of which (well, perhaps not the brand names) they
were ALSO going to do while here. So...if there was no conclusion jumping in
the face of no evidence, why ask THAT particular question instead of any
other?

Ooooh, yet another one resorting to ad hominem because he can't actually
address the question. Oh, dear me, he cries, you mean lady, you CAUGHT me, I
can't answer you, but if I call you enough names and throw out enough
shocking and chauvinist language, perhaps everybody will forget that you
have a point and will think I'm brave or something.
You are quite right, the government DID NOT GIVE A REASON. Therefore the
assumption that it was either legitimate OR that it was because the two were
atheists speaking at an atheist meeting is raising a false dichotomy (you
know what that is, right?) .
Is the only possible ILLEGITIMATE reason to deny a visa the intention of
someone to speak at an atheist convention? They couldn't have been targeted
for any other reason? Yet, there was no hint that such might be possible;
only two options were given; either the denial was 'legitimate' or it was
illegitimate BECAUSE they were atheists about so speak at an atheist
convention.
If you can't get that one simple concept through your head, it's no wonder
that you can only resort to ad hominems. Actually thinking through a
position requires synapses that actually fire, and communicating that
position requires a willingness to access a slightly broader vocabulary.

Why are you making a big deal of this, Diana? The original poster was
just asking a question about two people who were having trouble getting
to a convention. Said poster wasn't making wild accusations against
any government or agency, she was just concerned that it *might* be a
case of discrimination. Emphasis on might. Last I checked, we are
allowed to ask questions when we have concerns. Afterall, the answers
we recieve could very well alieviate our concerns, rather than make
them worse, now couldn't they? So please, be a dear, and try to chill
out a bit, Diana. There are many other posts that are much more worthy

Actually, my first response to the first question wasn't me getting excited.
It was me asking a question in exactly the same frame of mind the first
poster had; a civil pointing out that her position had some logical flaws.
The 'excitement' came as result of the almost universal battering I have
been taking because I dared point something out; that if there was no reason
given, there is NO REASON to assume that the reason could possibly have been
their atheism or the event to which they were headed. None. (shrug)
Of course, being called the sort of names that jwk uses generally doesn't
make me feel reasonable, either.

This was your very first reply on the thread, before anyone had even
said a word to you. So it seems, in retrospect, that you were the one
who began the tone of nastiness. If you had wanted jwk and the others

2) they are slightly darker than Brittney Spears.
Actually, turns out that the problem may be a simple one shared by just
about everybody who wants to come to the US since 9/11; in order to get a
visa, you must apply six to eight weeks before you need one. These two,
bless 'em, simply didn't leave enough time to process their visas.
Dang, the same thing happened to my daughter when she applied for a visa to
get into Brazil. Only they made her wait six months. Do you suppose it was
legitamate, or did it have something to do with the fact that she was a
Mormon?
paranoia reigns supreme....

Oh, really?
What makes you think that this denial is, therefore, OBVIOUSLY the result of
their atheism ???
She didn't say that.
Paranoid, are we?
Apparently not as much as you are.
