Object: After this what?
I am an atheist and quite young (15) , i have been thinking quite alot
lately...
I live my life, i make a family,i get old and old, i die... i lived
this very short lifetime. probably i will be forgotten..i was
someone, who lived in 20** and died, nothing special, i will become
fertilizer after 1000 years...the world will go on...
if you just think about your life and how insignificant you are..
doesn't it make you sad?
I just wish i could believe in some GOD even if he didn't existed, at
least i wouldn't be so scared of death...

"complex question"
'Significance' is relative. What do you mean
by 'insignificant'?

I just wish i could believe in some GOD even if he didn't existed, at

Why are you scared of death?
How would believing in a god change that?

Even the sun is going to 'die' eventually. That's just life (and death).
Yeah. It *is* sorta sad. But that's what reality is, in part: life filled
with a great amount of sadness. (And not for one's self either! Ever want to
cry upon watching an animal killed before your very eyes?)

I just wish i could believe in some GOD even if he didn't existed, at
least i wouldn't be so scared of death...

You stick to your guns. You are staring a deeply disappointing truth right
in the face, and you ain't a flinching! That takes courage. And besides:
That 'God' the Jesus/God people so desperately cling to is a piece of crap
when you get right down to it. He's downright 'mentally retarded' in a
man-made, 'created in the imagination' sort of way -- *besides* being
downright 'evil'. Thank your 'lucky' stars he *isn't* for real!! What a
puke!
As for death: It's as 'natural' as being born. Just be the very best person
you can be and go out of this existence ( a looooong, loooooooong time from
now) damn proud of yourself for having done so.

Learn to enjoy the wonders of the world and don't waste your time worrying
about death.
There is no need to be 'scared of death' any more than you are scared of
falling asleep at night.
After death ALL the senses are also dead so you have no further experiences
of any kind - neither
pain nor happiness.

Not in the least. It *does* mean, however, that I need to make the most of
my life. That gives me personal responsibility for my own happiness.
As far as insignificance, why would the existence of a god or gods make my
individual life more "significant?"

Good for you. Keep it up and you'll go far. You've got a lot of living
ahead of you.

It's up to you. You won't make an impact on the world if all you do is
worry about it.

if you just think about your life and how insignificant you are..
doesn't it make you sad?

No, it doesn't make me sad. Here and now I am alive, not a thousand
years from now and not a million miles from here, so I live my life as
if I matter to myself.

I just wish i could believe in some GOD even if he didn't existed, at
least i wouldn't be so scared of death...

You might as well quit agonizing over it and get on with living instead
of being afraid of dying. You've got a lot of living ahead of you.

Sometimes, yes. Being able to imagine the future is very
useful, but it has its burdens. While we are alive, we have
an instinct to want to remain alive. But there may well
come a time when you look forward to getting off the ride.

I just wish i could believe in some GOD even if he didn't existed, at

Reality can be a *****. I have gotten to the point that I
am not afraid of being dead. But getting dead can be rough.

still around.

We're all scared, the religious most of all, who have to delude
themselves in order to hide these same fears from themselves. The odds
that you even exist inthe first place are infintesimal, so face it
straight on, do the best you can, enjoy the ride, we are all special,
if only for a short time.

Oh come on. Like we don't all go through that terrify moment of realizing,

It's normal to have such feelings. It's called angst. Think of it this
way - what were your worries and concerns before you were born? You'll
have those same worries and concerns after you are dead.

And you wouldn't be afraid to see your whole life pass before you in a
few seconds. Your life would have been worth it, or rather worthy of
Him. That ought to make someone happy, at least.

Nope. I find it rather reassuring. I'm not the center of all things and my
personal survival isn't a cosmic event. Life will go on.

I just wish i could believe in some GOD even if he didn't existed, at

Been there, done that, doesn't work.
Ask yourself why the religious still feel grief when a loved one dies? Why
do they feel terror when their lives are threatened? Because they don't
*really believe what they say.
And consider that maybe that's for the best. Suicide bombers believe
firmly in an afterlife. So did the 9/11 terrorists.
Gods and afterlife beliefs aren't necessarily all they're cracked up to be.
My own experience as having been Christian for much of my life leads me to
believe that the religious do *not deal with the issue of mortality. They
shove it into a dark corner where it lurks all their life.
We *all experience this. We either accept it as part of life or we try to
hide it in a box marked "god" and try the rest of our lives to forget
about it.
You *can move beyond this. People do. Else there would not be any atheists
at all. But here we are.
Consider, also, that rarity creates value. If life were infinite, would it
mean anything at all? Would people bother to create meaning in their lives
if there was always a tomorrow?

Once upon a time in alt.atheism, dear sweet

(
) made the light shine upon us with this:

I am an atheist and quite young (15) , i have been thinking quite alot
lately...
I live my life, i make a family,i get old and old, i die... i lived
this very short lifetime. probably i will be forgotten..i was
someone, who lived in 20** and died, nothing special, i will become
fertilizer after 1000 years...the world will go on...

if you just think about your life and how insignificant you are..
doesn't it make you sad?

Not if I'm doing something extreme at the time.

I just wish i could believe in some GOD even if he didn't existed, at
least i wouldn't be so scared of death...

Did you ever get rid of your teddy bear or security blanket? Same thing.
