Wisdom?
Erudition?
No problem with the numbers???
8000+ posts in a month...just at one forum?
Wisdom is a most important quality to develop if one desires to live a
life at peace. But before we can develop wisdom, we must be able to
think rationally. All these qualities are related. Seeing things
clearly is a byproduct of being at peace and developing wisdom.
Applying wisdom to our actions yields peace and being at peace allows
rational thought. But just applying rational thought alone does not
equal wisdom or peace.
Remember ..."A wise mans knows what he says and a fool only says what
he knows."
No, my friend, Al's posts say it all about what is inside of
Al...sickness.
The numbers most definitely do matter.
The sicker the person, the more this sickness is expressed in numbers.
Number play a very important part in the addicts life, numbers give
clarity with what direction the addiction is headed in my friend.
Al is sick in body, sick in mind, sick in sprit.
Anyone that says otherwise is also is the same boat of being a sick or
delusioned human specimen.
Sure Al has some smarts, but academic smarts are not the same as peace
smarts.
In the area of peace smarts Al is bankrupt. Same with others smarties
here...Raven, Robibnikoff, Mark K. Bilbo, Michael Gray, Kate, Floyd,
Neil Kelsey, Michelle Milkin, Ghod, Parsifa, Martin, Lucifer, Syd M,
John #1782, Enkidu, Hollis, Gail, Rev. Karl E. Taylor, Martin,
BuddyThunder, NC, Stoney, Medusa, David Silverman aka Sanity's Little
Helper...all good examples of how academic smarts only go so far in
life.
If your proposition was the case, then all the smarties here would be
beacons of inner peace instead of cesspools stewing in their own
sewage.
Hell, we can look at MKB, look at all the technical books he wrote in
his heyday before he ruined his carrier. A very 'smart' man, but
devoid of inner peace. Now look at him..what a pitiful sight to see
how low a human can sink.
We see this time and time again, especially in the atheist community.
Atheists put all their hope in logic and smarts, while they are devoid
of spiritual values and humanity towards their fellow humans.
.....my discussion of this topic from an earlier post.
"Living your life by the numbers"
I use numbers extensively within my life to guide me along the road
to inner peace. Addicts that have addictions that have to be
participated in such as overeating, compulsive spending, clutter,
debt, sex addiction, workaholism and time debtors all have to be clear
about what is going on with their respective addictions and numbers
are the common denominator when it comes to clarity for recovery in
these areas. The AA's, GA's, NA's, etc., can generally leave their
addiction alone, in the sense that they can abstain from their drug of
choice and thus don't need to use numbers to give them guidelines on
how much to participate with their respective addiction. So if you do
not suffer from addictions that must be participated in on a daily
basis, then the rest of his post might not be of much interest to you.
Although, numbers can still come into play with all addictions that
have a common foundation of H. A. L. T. S., as any addict that suffers
from too much stress and problems can be prone to a slip. If an old
timer thinks they are immune from slips, then they must not be an
addict anymore? Numbers can help give balance to any person that is
having trouble finding balance and I use them extensively within my
own recovery programs for clarity and to provide guidelines for
maintaining comfortable boundaries.
My wife, who is in OA, helped crystallize my thoughts on this subject
4 years ago. We had been doing a work project at our new house and I
forgot to wear a watch, so I lost track of the time. Her pattern is to
keep working past any sort of normal deadline, neglect to eat, skip as
many meals as possible, then sit down exhausted with multiple bowls of
junk food. I happened to discover that I was 40 minutes late for
lunch and told her we have to quit the work for lunch. She wanted to
keep working of course and forget lunch. I'm also in OA and at my goal
weight range of 150 to 155 pounds and cannot afford eating in such
haphazard ways if I want to maintain my weight loss and peace. This
episode sparked the question in me of how can a food addict get any
success with their program if they are unwilling to do the simple
basics like not overworking so they can have energy to cook a healthy
meal or just make time to even eat meals? (AKA HALTS Don't get too
hungry, angry, lonely, tired or stressed. I add the "S" for stress
awareness.)
As I told her, "it doesn't take a genius to just eat by the clock."
This idea reminded me of the old "paint by numbers" painting I did as
a kid and I thought to myself how addicts have to live their lives by
the numbers with certain addictions if they want any long term success
with their recovery. (I am happy to report wife is making progress
with changing this habit.) Numerical clarity helps takes the pressure
off us when certain boundaries are spelled out by the numbers.
Removing "US" from the equation is very important since our best
efforts at thinking were a disaster and we need a new way to think and
act. This new foundation for addicts is also useful if they suffer
from big ego's and your program is ego based instead of truth based.
If you missed my earlier post on this subject, write me for a copy.
Our ego drives us to perfection and can get us in trouble. It can
even tell us to drop out of recovery due to a lack of being 100%
perfect. One day an alcoholic told me how he quit AA a few years back
since he felt it did not work for him. My first thought when I hear
"The 12 steps didn't work for me" is that it's not the program fault -
the program never stops working - it is the addict that stops working
the program. Each day we have a choice between addiction or recovery,
so our path is clear and the only decision is which path do we take?
This addict detailed how he had slipped 4 times over the year he was
in AA. When I questioned him a little further he admitted he used to
get drunk almost every day before AA. If he had a little numerical
clarity on this issue he might have seen that if he only got drunk 4
days out of a conservative 300 days per year that he used to get
drunk, that would mean he was 98.667% perfect with his alcohol
recovery program. Such perfection and success in any other pursuit
would be fantastic - who among us wouldn't like to be 98.6% perfect?
Unfortunately, many people do not see their recovery efforts in these
terms, they only see it via their ego. Many addicts suffer from tunnel
vision and see things in terms of black or white with no shades of
gray. They would rather go back and practice their addiction year
round and be a 98% failure instead of being 98% perfect or 80% better
or even be at peace 60% of the time with their addiction. People base
their program on ego instead of truth. Numbers don't lie and numbers
speak the truth very clearly...unless you happen to be one of the
young gun accountants that cook the books of many public company
nowadays. But it is all up to the addict seeing this for themselves -
we can never force recovery on another.
I started to become aware of the importance of numbers when I entered
Debtors Anonymous in 1986, even though I started in another 12 step
program more than a decade earlier. In my life before recovery, my
only use for numbers was to chase what I perceived to be the "rich
life" and to feed my speculative gambling and compulsive spending
addiction. I didn't use numbers to help me get better, I used numbers
to further my disease. My goal when entering DA was to get rich and be
able to buy anything I wanted to in life. I didn't realize at the
time, that just giving a compulsive spender or gambler more money was
like giving a drug addict free drugs. Free drugs will not fix the
underlying addiction problem. Over time, I saw my problems in life
were not due to a lack of money. I had deeper problems that were based
in "acceptance." I refused to accept where I was at with my life,
always wanting more and was on the endless road of never being
satisfied. I also had very little gratitude for what I had. After I
got some recovery under my belt, my mantra changed dramatically. From
waking up each morning thinking what can I buy next or get drugged up
with to make me happy and whole. I now would think, each day my goal
is to live within my means, comfortably fit within my space and
gratefully accept my current position in life. This treadmill we can
be stuck on of always wanting more, never being able to be satisfied
and lacking gratitude for what we have can best be expressed in a
quote from the book "How To Want What You Have":
"People who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of sensual pleasure
find
that the more pleasure they get, the more they want. Small, ordinary
pleasures soon lose their power to please and must be replaced with
more intense or exotic ones. Heedless sensualists usually meet a bad
end. They learn the hard way that their desires are relentless and
insatiable. "
In 1988, at a Los Angeles DA meeting in Westwood, there was a woman
that shared how she had never knew she was chewing $890 of gum per
year until she started to record her numbers. She said "this was the
gift of clarity that recording provided her." Hearing that tidbit at
the meeting help change my life to one that seeks out clarity instead
of hiding from it. Clarity with addictions that must be participated
in on a daily basis is of vital importance, as the division between
success and failure is often separated by a fine line. Another
important lesson I learned one day was the fact that I could not keep
a mantle dusted when it had 20 things on it, but I was able to keep it
dusted when it only had 3 things on it. This clued me into accepting
and living within my comfortable means. I always tell addicts that
complain they do not like to dust the same thing. There is nothing
wrong with not liking to dust - but there is something wrong with not
liking to dust and having too many things to dust. This also clued me
into time limits and when I stretch myself too far, I seem to shut
down and backslide. One lady in OA termed this as "the first thing to
go are the crudites" When she did not have time to make her raw
vegetable to eat, she knew this was a signpost to slow down and relax
some.
When I first started with Clutterers Anonymous in 1997, I began to
take inventory of my clutter. Many a clutterer took that first step in
the direction of recovery by setting a timer for 15 minutes a day to
work on cleaning up their clutter. Clarity of time, clarity of
recovery, clarity of our direction and clarity of our numerical space
limitations. This timed 15 minute work period is how I first started
and then I expanded it to 2 - timed 15 minute work periods each day,
once I saw the benefits of my recovery work in action. Besides having
$11,000 of books that needed to be trashed, I had a large collection
of CD's and videos. I counted up the CD's and discovered I had 856
CD's. That was when I swore off buying any more CD's. It finally
occurred to me if I wasn't content or happy with 856 CD's I wasn't
going to be happy with the #857, #858 or #1958 CD either. It was an
endless game of always wanting more and I was tired of playing that
game any longer. Now I just get my CD's at the library or use what I
have. Now, from these humble beginnings and after working on clutter
recovery like a part time job for 8 years, I am 98% decluttered from
where I started from when entering Clutterers Anonymous.
I had to look at most areas of my cluttered life with hard numbers and
work on living within those numbers. When I moved into our new house I
was going through my clothes and took inventory of my sweaters. I had
33 sweaters all over the house and in storage. I decided that 20
sweaters was plenty, so I pared down the sweaters to 20. Now If I want
to buy another sweater, I have to use the "One In ~ One Out" system
and trash one to make room for the new one. I was surprised to find
that I had accumulated 66 pairs of shoes and over 210 neck ties until
I bothered to count them. I would just buy more shoes or ties whenever
one caught my eye. I use this same clutter system for most areas that
have to be participated in with new purchases. This is how I use
numbers with my clutter program. Some areas, such as guns, antiques,
CD's, videos, books, etc., can be left alone and I decided to abstain
from any new purchases in these areas and be content where I was at.
In addition, I use the clarity number provides me in my Overeaters
Anonymous program by recording my food, weighing and measuring and
recording calories. It is good to remember that such programs require
a balance of spiritual as well as mechanical tools of recovery for
balanced success. I have no natural ability to know what comfortably
fits within my mouth or stomach and have no ability otherwise to know
how many calories my body needs to stay a normal size. My "big eyes"
and mouth are no reliable guide and since I suffer from sensation
addiction and nothing is ever enough, so I have to base my limits on
numbers. When I first started to record calories, I figured by the
book that I had the lifestyle to eat and burn 2800 calories a day.
Well, as it turned out I needed to eat 1800 to 2000 calories a day to
get to a normal size. This lesson reminds me of a quote from Alan
Watts; 'It is not what you wish...it is not what you think...but what
IS." In the long run, your body will say what is the right calorie
count for you to maintain. (If you missed my earlier post "Calories
and How They Work" write me for a copy.)
Overeating is similar to debting and cluttering. With debtors, we
refuse to live within our financial means and produce "financial fat"
or debt. With overeating we refuse to live within our caloric means
and produce "body clutter" or fat. We can also say the same thing
about clutterers that refuse to live comfortably within their allotted
space as they produce "space fat" with their hoards. Numbers can help
with all these addictions. Just be careful, you don't get locked into
one set of numbers and become blinded to everything else. (If you
missed my earlier post called "When a Man's Mind is Concentrated He is
Blind" write me for a copy.) Our son had blood pressure of 150 over
85 which was very high for a 15 year old. He was eating 7000 mg of
sodium a day which was triple the recommended amount. So we had to
develop clarity with sodium in all our diets. But just because a food
is low sodium, doesn't mean it is healthy in all respects. Whether it
if fat, protein, calories, sodium or whatever...one thing only goes so
far with giving a person good life. Seek balance.
I also applied numerical clarity to my sex addiction. It would sound
nicer and more natural if I could have sex whenever the natural desire
came about. But, would it also be nicer if I could eat, spend and
drink and do all the rest like a normal person does as well. So I
needed some tools to support my recovery in these areas and numerical
clarity has helped me. In SCA, they use gray areas as warning zones to
allow an addict a cushion zone to maintain recovery within. Addictions
that require daily participation in require judgments to be made. And
where humans make judgments - mistakes can and will happen. As such, I
use cushions to absorb the inevitable mistake within certain
addictions so my self worth does not have to absorb it. I saw this
phenomena time and time again in SA. The addicts had no cushion for
recovery and also no peace. SA is black or white, sex is not black or
white, Neither is any other area where judgments have to be made and
flux and variations are the rule. I supplemented my S programs and
joined SCA, SLAA and found much peace with my sex addictions once I
changed from black and white thinking and allowed gray areas as
warning zones. So I make use of all S programs that can lend a hand
for peace. (My earlier 6 page post called "Putting Peace First" goes
into more details on cushions, if you missed it and want a copy write
me.)
I use number extensively for balance in my voluntary simplicity and
time management programs as well. Internet addiction addicts will
benefit from time clarity with their addiction. Personally, If I write
to recovery lists past 10.30 Am or write recovery work longer than an
hour or so, my stomach ulcer starts burning and my sleep in disturbed
with what I wrote, so I have to follow the numbers here too. Now, I
don't always follow the rules, for as the 12 and 12 mentions regarding
step 2 - addicts are a defiant lot. But, at least I am clear what
needs to be done and then once the pain starts in I work on pulling
back. As good as living you life my the numbers is, don't forget to
work the numbers on the spiritual side of the program too...working
the 12 steps. With recovery programs that require mechanical tools
like DA, OA, CLA, and the "S" programs, we need to be mindful of
balancing the mechanical tools such as recording money or calories,
paying off debts, exercise, clearing clutter, healthy cooking habits,
weighing and measuring foods, using pressure relief groups, deciding
on a sexual recovery plan, etc.) with the spiritual tools such as 12
step work. Again, seek balance in all things - for one thing, no
matter how fine only goes so far with giving a person a good and
healthy life.

A sampling of Al Klein's "One Hundred A Day" posts (should you take

From what we saw in Australia (or was that 'Austria'?), he can't walk
at the same time.

A point, yes.
Then there was the pretsil(sp) incident, which would suggest that

His posts are on topic, and usually well reasoned. The

In fact, quite the reverse.
That he able to post such quality in such quantity is a measure of his
wisdom and erudition.
A sampling of Al Klein's "One Hundred A Day" posts (should you take
the time) would show you that they are founded on one of two (usually
hate infused) opinions; 1) there is no god and anyone who thinks

With which I agree completely and unequivocally.

No argument there, either.
Apparently Al is incapable of
even thinking about any other basis for a response, regardless of what
the topic may be.
And your contributions are what, exactly?
Yours have not only bordered on absessive monomania, but have 2
passports to the district.
You are a stalker, and a nutter.
So much for your claim of, "quality, wisdom and erudition."
Why?
I agree with him.
What arguments have you presented in opposition?
None.
