Another liberal bites the dust!
AP/Las Vegas Sun 7-19-04 Jerry Fink
Aladdin President Bill Timmins ordered security guards to escort pop
diva Linda Ronstadt off the property following a concert Saturday
night during which she expressed support for controversial documentary
filmmaker Michael Moore.
Timmins, who was among the almost 5,000 fans in the audience at the
Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts, had Ronstadt escorted to her
tour bus and her belongings from her hotel room sent to her. Timmins
also sent word to Ronstadt that she was no longer welcome at the
property for future performances, according Aladdin spokeswoman Tyri
Squyres.
How much weight that carries is debatable, since the bankrupt Aladdin
is in the process of being sold to a group headed by Planet Hollywood
International Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive Robert Earl.
Near the close of her performance, Ronstadt dedicated the Eagles hit
"Desperado" to Moore, producer of "Fahrenheit 9/11," and the room
erupted into equal parts boos and cheers.
She said Moore "is someone who cares about this country deeply and is
trying to help."
Ronstadt has been making the dedication at each of her engagements
since she began a national tour earlier this summer, but it has never
sparked such a reaction.
Hundreds of angry fans streamed from the theater as Ronstadt sang.
Some of them reportedly defaced posters of her in the lobby, writing
comments and tossing drinks on her pictures.
Timmins told Las Vegas Sun gossip columnist Timothy McDarrah: "We live
in a city where people come from all over the world to be entertained.
We hired Ms. Ronstadt as an entertainer, not as a political activist.
"Whether you are politically on the left or on the right is not the
point. She went up in front of the stage and just let it out. This was
not the correct forum for that."
Timmins said she was wrong to bring her politics to the stage.
"Our first and only priority is the enjoyment of our customers," he
said. "I made the decision to ask Miss Ronstadt to leave the hotel. A
situation like that can easily turn ugly and I didn't want anything
more to come out of it. There were a lot of angry people there after
she started talking.
"If she wants to talk about her views to a newspaper or in a magazine
article, she is free to do so. But in a stage in front of four and a
half thousand people is not the place for it."
Squyres said half the audience walked out, an estimate that might have
been high. But the number was substantial, nevertheless.
"The hotel's policy is that we hired her to entertain guests, not to
express her political views," Squyres said.
According to Squyres, the 58-year-old singer did not create a scene as
she was escorted out of the hotel and to her tour bus.
"She wasn't happy, but she was cooperative," Squyres said.
Attempts to reach Ronstadt and her manager were unsuccessful Sunday
and this morning.
Squyres said a number of ticket holders had asked for their money back
after an article appeared in a local newspaper last week quoting her
making disparaging remarks about Las Vegas.
"She said Vegas isn't the best place to perform anyway," Squyres said.
Other fans asked for their money back shortly after the Saturday night
show got underway, when Ronstadt informed the audience that ads
publicizing the concert were incorrect. The advertisements called it
her "Greatest Hits Tour."
Ronstadt started the evening with her 1983 hit "What's New?" and then
set her fans straight about what they might expect during the concert.
"In case you are wondering what I'm going to do," she said, "Driving
into town I saw this big billboard up there with my picture on it
saying 'The Greatest Hits Tour.'
"That was news to us. We didn't know it was 'The Greatest Hits Tour.'"
Squyres said Ronstadt was wrong.
"Her management gave us the information and approved the ad," she
said.
According to Squyres, Ronstadt lopped off about 20 minutes from the
show, walking away from an encore portion of the concert, which I
attended as the reviewer for the Sun.
The incident capped a generally lackluster, unenthusiastic performance
by one of the top singers of the '70s and '80s.
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra opened the concert. The highlight of
the 30-minute segment was a rendition of George Gershwin's "Rhapsody
in Blue," featuring pianist Terrance Wilson.
Ronstadt began with several songs from the 1920s, '30s and '40s she
and arranger Nelson Riddle recorded, among them "Bewitched, Bothered
and Bewildered," "Someone to Watch Over Me" and "Straighten Up and Fly
Right."
She performed Cole Porter's "Get Out of Town," Frank Loesser's "Never
Will I Marry" and jazz great Billy Strayhorn's "Lush Life."
And then she gave fans some of what they came for, several of her hits
from the '70s and '80s, including "Just One Look" (1979), "Ooh Baby,
Baby" (1978) and "Somewhere Out There" (1987).
Although she still has that powerful, distinctive voice, Ronstadt was
merely going through the motions.
The only song she had trouble with was "Blue Bayou." She stumbled over
the lyrics, seemed to gasp for breath at one point and ended the song
in Spanish, screaming the words rather than singing them.
Her performance was uninspired and generally flat. She lacked stage
presence, doing little more than sleepwalk from song to song.
The fiasco at the end was the most exciting part of the show.

Another American who fears the offhand comments of entertainers. What
is it with these Yankees who fear discourse and opinions? It's not
like she's the first rock and roll (and nightclub, jazz, country
western, and musical) star who offered a political comment.
Music has been the venue of politcal commentary from the begining of
recorded history.
Nothing sadder than a jackbooted whiner.

And, since when is Linda Ronstadt 'up-and coming'? She has been making
music for over 30 years. Her first album (with the Stone Ponies) was
released in 1967. She began her solo career in 1968. What was GWB doing in

Title: THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION -- THEATRE OF THE ABSURD 29 Jul 2004 04:10:21 PM
THE DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION -- THEATRE OF THE ABSURD
http://www.iconoclast.ca/MainPage.asp?page=/newPage19.asp
One thing the liberals in America hate worse then Rush Limbaugh is a
Canadian taking up the fight for the cause of conservatism in America.
Trust me, I read the derogatory views of the democratic underground. I
was even swamped with hits on my web site, because I mentioned the "R"
word. No not Republican, but Rush.
Here in Canada, Canadians have chosen a liberal minority, which means
there will be another election soon. To move a country from the
extreme left to the right of center, in a matter of six months, was
asking a bit much. But you know, we damn near did it. Since we have a
short lull in the battle here, I thought I would take the time to help
my American friends.
I just want to let you know, that as a Canadian I love Canada. But I
also love America, more than Michael Moore and many Democrats, which
is why I want to see America have the best.
I watched the Democratic convention, live on CNN, broadcast from
Boston's "hermetically sealed Fleet Center." Since the CRTC, better
know as the Communist Radio Truth Commission, shut FOX News out
Canada, you folks in America can guess how much trouble I had to
contend with, just wading through the liberal propaganda.
Election buzz words are very much the same in the US, as they are here
in Canada. The liberals parrot the very same message of a positive
hope, and an important election. We also share a common problem. That
is getting the people out to vote.
One thing we differ on, and that is when we have a judicial recount,
we here in Canada except the results, then get on with life. This
issue was bought to the convention floor. The Dems still whine about
President Bush being appointed. It's very much a hypocritical and
stupid accusation, since if it was Bob Dole that was "appointed," you
know very well that the liberals would then have you believe that it
was democracy in action.
The Democrats want Americans to think that they are all united, but
when it comes to the war in Iraq, former President Jimmy Carter, and
Howard Dean wouldn't go there. Depending on the weather, John Kerry
might, might not, and if he did, he wouldn't do what Bush did. What
would Kerry do?
Hillary Clinton wants to increase the strength of the armed forces for
the US. But Kerry voted to decrease the strength of the armed forces,
while at the same time he jumped up and down on the senate floor
screaming for Clinton to go to war, because of weapons of mass
destruction. But even so Hilary say's, Kerry is the one. Hang on to
your hats folks, this is going to get better as we go.
Jimmy Carter (he's the man of peace and compassion) made a priceless
comment. He said that you can't be a president of war and a president
of peace at the same time. Hasn't he heard John Kerry on the campaign
trail? Kerry has made it clear that he can be anything you want, but
more than anything, Kerry wants to be president at any or all cost.
Consider this! When Ronald Reagan, "the war monger," got elected,
peace broke out around the world. The US embassy hostages in Iran then
became a hot item. When the final votes were tallied and Reagan won,
they couldn't get them out of Iran fast enough.
In his speech, Carter made it known that Kerry went to war in Viet
Nam, while Bush didn't show up. At least Bush put on a uniform, while
Clinton dodged the bullet completely. Americans wanted one of two
things from that war, either win it or get out. What they didn't want
is some guy undermining the cause, with a sympathetic approach toward
the enemy. That's a war hero?
George Bush was the first President to declare an all out war on
terrorism. That took a lot of courage. Does the world hate America
because of George Bush? We certainly know that the freedom bashers,
around the globe, do. But that's not the world. Everywhere and
anytime, there is a trouble spot in a country, the world calls upon
Americans to sacrifice their sons and daughters, in order to solve the
situation. Rather than being thankful for their freedom, the left wing
element around the world, including in America, regard America as an
imperialist bully......

Linda Ronstadt: Reports of casino incident not accurate
http://www.underreported.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=1365&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0
As highlighted by rense.com, interventionmag.com, and
ronstadt-linda.com, according to a July 21, 2004 Tucson Citizen
article (emphasis added):
Singer Linda Ronstadt was not asked to leave a Las Vegas casino
Saturday after she endorsed Michael Moore's controversial film
"Fahrenheit 9/11," the Tucson native told the Tucson Citizen
yesterday.
And she was not booed off the stage by a concert crowd that had
erupted in mayhem, she said.
Speaking by phone from San Francisco, Ronstadt said that she left the
Aladdin Resort & Casino immediately after the concert and was not
aware that the management was irritated by her comments until an hour
after she left the show.
[...] The Los Angeles Times and Associated Press reported that
Ronstadt was escorted off the property, not allowed to return to her
room and booed off the stage and that people were throwing drinks by
the close of her show.
None of those things happened, she said.
By her account, she had originally planned to fly out after the show
to the next city on the tour but a sinus problem prompted her doctor
to cancel that plan. One of her aides then booked her a room at the
Aladdin, which she never saw.
After the concert, she went backstage and was about to head to the car
provided for her by the Aladdin when she was confronted by an Aladdin
employee.
"This woman comes huffing up to me and says, 'I'm afraid I can't let
you leave.' I said, 'What?' And she said, 'You can't leave yet because
the owner is on his way over here to talk to you.' " the singer said.
She declined and left for the Ritz-Carlton in her tour bus when the
employee said the Aladdin car would not be allowed to leave, Ronstadt
said.
"I thought she was going to read me my Miranda rights or make me start
writing things on the blackboard," she said.
"I didn't know they were mad at me until we were gone, and I didn't
know what they were mad at me about until about an hour later, when
apparently they called up one of the people that was traveling with us
and went, 'She's talking about Michael Moore, and this is a place for
entertainment, not politics,' " Ronstadt said.
One of the prominent places the story was reported was the July 19
Drudge Report, which linked to a Las Vegas Review Journal article:
When her show was over, the Aladdin had her checked out of her room
and escorted off the premises.
Notably, the Review Journal did not solicit Ronstadt for her side of
the story the way the Tucson Citizen did. Evidently a casino's word is
golden to the Las Vegas Review Journal, and by proxy also to the
Drudge Report. (And Drudge has not linked to any subsequent story as a
followup correction.)

True, but it says a lot about the owner's lack of patriotism and

Just like the mullahs in Iran, huh?

I believe most land and houses in America are private property, which means
that freedom of speech in reality only exist in state owned woods.

She is an artist. It shows you how reactionary are those opposed to MM.
The song dedication to MM was for Desperado, which should have pleased those
opposed to MM.
Desperado
Don Henley & Glen Frey
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
You been out ridin' fences for so long now.
Oh, you're a hard one,
but I know that you've got your reasons.
These things that are pleasin' you
can hurt you somehow.
Don't you draw the queen of diamonds, boy!
She'll beat you, if she's able.
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet.
Now it seems to me some fine things
have been laid upon your table,
but you only want the ones that you can't get.
Desperado, ah, you ain't gettin' no younger.
Your pain and your hunger, they're drivin' you home.
Freedom, oh, freedom. That's just some people talkin'
Your prison is walking through this world all alone.
Don't your feet get cold in the wintertime?
The sky won't snow and the sun won't shine.
It's hard to tell the nighttime from the day.
You're losin' all your highs and lows.
Ain't it funny how the feeling goes away?
Desperado, why don't you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate.
It may be rainin' , but there's a rainbow above you.
You better let somebody love you
You better let somebody love you
before it's too late.

In-between-songs talk in concerts is as old as rock itself. If there are
rules what you can say in those, that's not democracy. Is this what America
has become? Once these was a constituiton.
What freedom is it you want to proserve? I believe they have those
restrictions in Iran.

If you expect to continue to be a successful musician you should not
***** your audience off. It's a bad product and a free market will
reject it.

What freedom is it you want to proserve?

If you feel that it's a feedom of speach issue would you then have the
right to go up on stage and make a political statement as well? Of
course not. Ronstadt can be hired by someone who wants to hear her
political message or she can do it on her own dime.

I believe they have those
restrictions in Iran.

Should you be prevented from boycotting the Aladdin?
