Face to faith

We need a more nuanced debate about religion, and must stop seeing it
in terms of being either a fantasy or a destructive force

Debate about the place of religion in society is intensifying. In the
wake of the July 7 attacks in London we are hearing more from the
secular left about the danger of putting religious discourse anywhere
near the public square. Voices have been raised which maintain that, at
bottom, religious belief is an excuse for fantasy: at best harmless
fantasy, but at worst the manifesto for a tendentious, totalitarian
dreamworld that pushes its utopian aspirations under the noses even of
those who happen to disagree with its hallucinatory visions of Arcadia.
