Spain's outgoing government pledged to make religious education
compulsory in schools, but the new prime minister wants to keep
Catholicism out of the classroom. Julius Purcell reports

The Latin above the main entrance of the La Salle school in Barcelona
says Ora et Labora (Pray and Work). Below this impressive façade,
parents are dropping off their children. Did they choose this school
because it is run by the Institute of the Brothers of Christian
Schools?
Most look surprised at this question; one mother says she has never
given the school's Christian characteristics much thought. But relaxed
as these parents are, religion in school is highly controversial in
Spain. Last year, legislation by the Conservative government of José
María Aznar to raise the profile of religion in the curriculum was
discussed extensively in the media, attacked on the left and
championed on the right.

I wish we could get such a sensible government here in the UK. The Rev. Blair
seems obsessed by handing over more and more perfectly good schools to "faith
communities". The same religious apartheid that's caused sectarianism in
Scotland and Liverpool and near civil war in Northern Ireland, is now getting
its chance to show what it can do for the rest of the country.
