America must ensure a righteous and Free Constitution for New Iraq. |
Freedom is the foundation of morality. All living beings have an
unalienable right to freedom*.
.. from your unalienable right to freedom come all other rights; upon
these rights are righteousness and justice founded.
Freedom to live
Freedom to own property
Freedom to be happy
Freedom from harm
Freedom to do anything which doesn't violate anyone else's freedom to
do anything
many others
Rights are not owed to you, but it is philosophically wrong for anyone
to violate them.
In the absence of a scientific philosophy, morality degenerates into
imposed doctrines of evil, death, and hatred. And yet if we are to
have a scientific moral philosophy, from where should we begin?
FREEDOM.
Since it is apparently, and unfortunately, power and not righteousness
which rules, we have countries which are a quirk in this philosophy, as
they posit rules, a prison; the tyranny of society taking the place of
the mutually exclusive desires of individuals - which when repeatedly
violated through conflict would become tyranny of an individual.
Crime is violating another's freedom. So unless you're violating
another's freedom because they have intent to violate another's
freedom, you're committing a crime.
Our public legislators mostly just write restrictions and decide
wherein to spend our tax dollars. While some laws may be ruled
unconstitutional, our legislators can apparently write any law to
outlaw anything they want. In the absence of a moral foundation, there
is little way to discern whether a law is right or wrong. All must
surely agree that a country's laws are not automatically "right" by
virtue of the power vested in them. Mass murderers have power as well.
While guilt itself may be a fictional concept, surely all must see the
obviousness and plainness of the fact, and accept the philosophy that
violating other's freedom is inherently "evil" and "wrong."
If some philosophical concept, doctrine, religion, or philosophy must
be imposed upon everyone, must not all agree that freedom is the best
concept to impose on everyone? Even if the majority maintains their
adherence to tyrannical doctrines and religions, minorities still
maintain their unalienable right to be free, which even when exercised
does not molest those who choose more structure and restraints for
themselves.
ONLY COUNTRIES WHICH RESPECT THEIR CITIZEN'S SOVEREIGNTY DESERVE TO
HAVE THEIR OWN SOVEREIGNTY RESPECTED.
and I suppose there are degrees to this.
the U.S. is not the freest country in the world, even if it has done
the most to promote freedom around the globe.
Countries in which a minority government does not respect the rights
and freedoms of the majority, _and_ countries in which a majority
government does not respect the unalienable rights and freedoms of the
ethnic or philosophical minority should
a) immediately ask for U.S. assistance and submit to a new peaceful
constitution of equality and freedom, or b) risk invasion.
However, unless a government is a threat to the U.S. we shall do what
is in the best interests of the citizens.
For a lot of Iraqi civilians have died as a result of the invasion of
Iraq.
We must ensure the New Iraq gets a free and Just Constitution, WITH
LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. We can not let an opportunity to make a
better country slip us by if possible.
We must impose freedom and Liberty upon the people of Iraq. In other
words, we must protect the sovereign rights of all the people, and not
allow the evil tyrannical psychos to impose their morality upon
unwilling defenseless innocents.
The new Iraqi Constitution to set back Iraqi women's rights back by 50
years.
"Before being "liberated" by U.S. forces, Iraqi women enjoyed rights to
education, employment, freedom of movement, equal pay for equal work
and universal day care, as well as the rights to inherit and own
property, choose their own husbands, vote and hold public office.
Ironically, these fundamental rights stand to be abolished in a
"democratic" Iraq that has been ushered into being by our government."

VIVIAN STROMBERG: Protecting women's rights in Iraq

The current draft of Iraq's constitution, which is expected to be
finalized by Monday, is a threat to women's human rights worldwide.
In the most dangerous provision in the draft, Article 14, Iraq's 1959
personal status laws would be replaced with Sharia, or Islamic law.
Such a move would roll back five decades of struggle by the Iraqi
women's movement as well as dash hopes for democratic secularism in
thecountry.
If passed, Article 14 could give self-appointed religious clerics the
authority to sanction grave violations against Iraqi women, including
denying them the rights to freedom of movement and travel, inheritance
and child custody.
In the worst instance, clerics -- and others -- could arbitrarily
interpret religious law to legalize forced marriages, nonconsensual
polygamy, compulsory religious dress, domestic abuse, execution by
stoning as punishment for female adultery and public flogging of women
for disobeying religious rules.
The 1959 laws are among the most progressive in the Middle East and an
important victory won by the Iraqi women's movement. They apply to all
Iraqis. But the new constitution would allow different laws to be
applied to different people, depending on one's sex and religious
affiliation.
Our country bears direct responsibility for the current climate of
hostility to Iraqi women's rights.
In 2003, Coalition Provisional Authority Chief Paul Bremer personally
appointed reactionary Muslim clerics to the Iraqi Governing Council,
empowering leaders with a stated commitment to restricting women's
rights. Many of these religious clerics remain in positions of power in
Iraq's current governing body, the National Assembly.
In the period leading up to the election of the National Assembly, the
United States refused to honor a series of demands by Iraqi women's
organizations, including calls to create a women's ministry, appoint
women to the drafting committee of Iraq's interim constitution and pass
laws to uphold women's human rights and criminalize domestic violence.
In fact, it could be argued that the state of Iraqi women's human
rights is worse today under U.S. occupation than it was under the
notoriously repressive regime of Saddam Hussein.
Before being "liberated" by U.S. forces, Iraqi women enjoyed rights to
education, employment, freedom of movement, equal pay for equal work
and universal day care, as well as the rights to inherit and own
property, choose their own husbands, vote and hold public office.
Ironically, these fundamental rights stand to be abolished in a
"democratic" Iraq that has been ushered into being by our government.
Because the U.S. government helped empower many of these religious
extremists who now hold sway over Iraq's constitutional process, we are
responsible for ensuring that this oppressive constitution does not
pass.
What's more, as the occupying power in Iraq, the United States is
legally obligated under the 1907 Hague Convention to guarantee the
human rights of Iraq's civilian population, including the full range of
women's human rights.
The freedom of Iraqi women is at stake.

*there is a hierarchy of species, and while we might recognize that
some species are actually be higher than our own, we should always put
our own species first (I think). The lower down the err, food chain a
species is, the less important it is, all the way down to insects and
plants, but depending on the animal my arguments do make a point for
vegetarians. Whether that is the only point to carry the day is
questionable.... homosapiens need to live too, and all animals may die
one day. While they are here on earth they should be treated humanely
at least.

America must ensure a righteous and Free Constitution for New Iraq.
Who voted "America" (U.S. of) as the policeman for the universe?
The only action that is incumbent on the U.S. is to cease committing
global crimes.

Governments do not give rights.
Governments are made up by people. Without people, there'd be no
governments. And yes, governments do give rights.

They are not "provided" by any entity.
They are struggled and worked for by those very living beings like
you.
If you want those rights, keep working on them.
