As an atheist who celebrates Christmas in a purely non-religious way, I see
nothing wrong with a Christmas tree. It is not more a religious symbol than
a Vanentine's Day heart-shaped chocolate box, or a Thanksgiving turkey.
Christmas, like Halloween, may have its roots in religion, but I consider it
(as I do Halloween) a secular holiday, open to participation for anyone, not
just Christians. It's a time for friends and families to get together,
exchange gifts, eat and drink, and enjoy each other's company.

Huh. Fox News. Good one. More like Fox "bring in an atheist and ask her
whether she's stopped eating babies". Let us know when she gets on a
*serious* news show. Thanks.

I have to admit ignorance on the religious significance of the
christmas tree. Can anyone explian this to me?
Foe me it, the tree, was the first step towards atheism. The day I
realized there was no Santa Claus was the day I began to question
everything. Not that I ever looked at a christmas tree as a youngster
with anything slightly religious in my heart, I just anticipated all
the presents I would receive. Once I knew it was Mom and Dad all
those religious symbols like the angel and atar on top themselve began
to be questioned and ultimately became meaningless to me.

"Christmas" trees are a remnant of Teutonic tree-worship.
Following the ancient and well-respected technique of co-opting pagan ceremonies
to convert the heathen, some missionary-bishop (several are given credit) talked
many tribes of Germans in to giving up Odin's oak and Thor's ash in favor of
Christ's fir (evergreen = everlasting life, donchaknow.) The custom of decorating
sacred trees after the harvest was moved to Christmas. It remained a rural folk
custom until Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (himself German) brought the
tradition to England; it became part of Dickens lore and the rest is history.
