ELLEN JOHNSON SPEAKS TO METROPLEX ATHEISTS
SATURDAY, DEC. 4, 2004 DALLAS AIRPORT MARRIOTT
Ellen Johnson, President of American Atheists, will be the guest speaker at
an event sponsored by the Metroplex Atheists (Dallas-Ft.Worth, Tx) on
Saturday, December 4.
Ms. Johnson is a leading spokesperson for the civil rights of American
nonbelievers.
She has testified before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights concerning the
problem of unconstitutional religious activity in the public schools. She
met with the White House Office of Liaison during the Clinton
Administration to address First Amendment issues, and gain “a seat at the
table” for Atheists in the discussion over related public policy concerns.
Ellen Johnson was Chairperson of the Godless Americans March on Washington
(GAMOW) Task Force which in November, 2002 organized the first assembly of
its kind bringing together the nation’s diverse community of Atheists,
Freethinkers, Secular Humanists and other “godless” citizens. She is a
frequent guest on public affairs media, and has appeared on “Hannity &
Colmes,” “Nightline,” “Washington Journal,” “The O’Reily Factor,” “Dayside
with Linda Vester,” and other programs. Ms. Johnson is also Executive
Director of the Godless Americans Political Action Committee (GAMPAC), a
national initiative to support and elect Atheists to public office.
Ms. Johnson will speak on "MADALYN MURRAY O'HAIR -- Why What She Stood For
Matters Today." Using archival video footage, Johnson explores the legacy
of O'Hair, and discusses the roots of important First Amendments, from the
federal faith-based initiative ("an American Religion Tax") to prayer in
schools and unconstitutional display of religious icons like the Ten
Commandments.
Here talk is free and open to the public. The venue is the Grand Prairie
Room at the Dallas/Ft. Worth Marriott Hotel, 8440 Freeport Parkway in
Irving, Texas.
