ELLEN JOHNSON SPEAKS SUNDAY AT S.C. SECULAR HUMANISTS
OF THE LOWCOUNTRY MEETING
Ellen Johnson, president of American Atheists will speak this Sunday,
October 17, 2004 at the monthly Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry
meeting in Charleston, S.C.
Johnson's presentation is on "MADALYN MURRAY O'HAIR -- The Battles She
Fought and Why What She Stood For Matters Today."
Madalyn O'Hair is the first person many people think of when they hear
the word "Atheist." She originally garnered public attention as one of
the plaintiffs in a combined case challenging coercive prayer and Bible
verse recitation in the public schools. She later founded the
organization American Atheists. She, her son John Garth and
granddaughter Robin Murray were murdered in 1995. The organization
continues on today under the leadership of Ellen Johnson, who served as
Task Force Chairwoman of the Godless Americans March on Washington, and
currently heads a political action committee for nonbelievers, GAMPAC.
Ms. Johnson will focus on O'Hair's life as a political activist, and why
her ideas are important today.
The meeting is free and open to the public, and will be held at Gage
Hall, 4 Archdale Street in Charleston beginning at 4:00 PM.
