Atheists civil rights group calls for the Washakie County School Board
to keep their personal religious beliefs out of county government and
the public schools.
Washakie County School District No. 1 proposes teaching creationism as
science and abstinence only as sex education.
The Worland School Board is proposing to open the science curriculum to
the teaching of biblical creationism on a par with evolution. They also
wish to require the teaching of abstinence only as the sole predicate of
sex education.
Duane C. Buchholz, Wyoming State Director for American Atheists stated:
?One can only wonder if the Board membership have been in suspended
intellectual animation. Apparently the flails that have gone on in
Kansas and Oklahoma over the same issues went by unnoticed, as well as
that in Colorado just last year.?
Wyoming received a grade of ?F? across the board in 2000 from an
evaluation completed by the Fordham Foundation. The evaluations stated:
?In sum, the Wyoming Science Content and Performance Standards are
useless for either curriculum planning or evaluation of performance.?
?Instead of correcting the problem, the school board is selfishly trying
to use this unfortunate situation to force their own personal religious
beliefs on the children of Washakie County. The people of Washakie
County should be outraged and oust these board members the first chance
they get? Buchholz further stated.
Buchholz added: ?If religious folks want to teach creationism,
abstinence only, or any other religious belief, they are free to do so
in their churches or homes. The public schools should be kept for real
education.?
American Atheists is a nationwide movement that defends the civil rights
of nonbelievers, works for the separation of church and state, and
addresses issues of First Amendment public policy.
