Ambulance, X-rays, treatment, splints, drugs and a nifty pair of purple
color crutches came to about, but under $300.00. And *we* know what purple
means don't we.

I think she would have no choice but to describe this as a function of
the free market. A sort of corporate bodily function that usually
doesn't take place in front of a dozen or so witnesses though. The
free market had ingested him, as it were, chewed him up, presumably
taken all his money (assuming for a second that he ever had any), he
wasn't getting better, he was broke and now he was
ummmm...constipating the healthcare system. "Fresh" sick people with
money and insurance were probably stacking up behind him in the
system, so the free market hired a van to function as a laxative. The
free market simply had to get him out of there and nevermind the
morals of the way it was done, which Ms. Rand would also have to
describe as a remarkably cost-effective function of the free market.
From the point of view of the hospital, two dudes and a van is a much
cheaper option than weeks and weeks of slow recovery, medicine,
nursing and a warm, clean hospital bed. At least that's the
conservative position-that this is the free market acting in its own
interest and ideally government should not interfere in such things.
It does indirectly raise some interesting questions about how much $$$
people with stuff ought to be compelled to pay for the healthcare
needs of people who have nothing at all. If I work hard, pay for my
own insurance, pay my taxes, eat healthy, excersice and generally
behave as a good citizen, how much should I be forced to pay for the
Tuberculosis treatment of some deranged ***** who has spent the last
20 years panhandling, smoking crack, talking to himself and living in
a dumpster behind the Burger King over on Lafayette Street? Why should
his bad habits, bad luck, bad genes or whatever you want to call it be
my responsibility? Then again, do we really want people being dumped
out of vans into the gutter? There's no easy answer here because
whichever way you go you get into an uncomfortable ethical place
pretty quickly.

Canada's socialization of their healthcare.

came into the office and left a trail of phlegm *everywhere*.
