We have just returned from a visit to the American Museum of Natural
History. It has been several years since my last visit there, and a first
for my younger (ages 8, 12) children. And, yes, the trip was inspired by
seeing "Night at the Museum" several months ago.
Before leaving, I sent away to the Freedom from Religion Foundation for
some stickers to put on/in the Gideon's Bible I expected to find in our
hotel room. Alas, the stickers did not arrive before we left, but it
turned out OK: there was NO GIDEON'S BIBLE in our hotel room!! Stolen?
Discarded? Never had one? Who knows?
The life-size blue whale sculpture is as impressive as ever. My daughter
particularly liked the Human Evolution exhibit. She was surprised at how
incomplete many fossil finds are, especially one as famous as 'Lucy.'
We made it a point to visit the Hayden Planetarium. I brought along a
copy of Dr. Tyson's new book, Death by Black Hole, for him to autograph
for me. Dr. Tyson was not there during our visit, but they promised he
would sign it and mail it back when he returned.
So, now we are home again, getting snowed on, of all things! Along with
the Gideon Bible stickers, I also purchased a copy of Julia Sweeney's CD,
"Letting Go of God", and a T-shirt with Margaret Sanger's famous motto,
"No Gods. No Masters." printed on it. I am ripping the CD so I can put
it on my mp3 player. I can't wait to listen to it.

"Placed by the Gideon Bible Society" The older versions had an
address, the newer ones their website.
I'm seeing fewer and fewer Bibles in hotel rooms. Looks like the big
chains are realizing they aren't worth the hassle.

That's what the bibles say. The stickers, available from the FFRF, come
in two varieties. A smaller one, to be placed on the outside cover, says
that (paraphrasing) literal belief in this book can be dangerous. A
larger sticker, to be placed inside, describes some of Gideon's exploits.
Like most OT bible heroes, he and God collaborate on several deeds that
would horrify anyone with a modern sense of morality.
On a side note, I wore my "No Gods. No Masters." T-shirt all day
yesterday, to mourn the newest nail in the coffin of civil liberties,
since the SCOTUS ruled that lawyers are qualified to practice medicine in
the outlawing of so-called 'Partial Birth Abortions.'

The museum's a cool place, isn't it? I was there back in February, though
I'll NEVER go again with my nephew. Run up to the dinosaur bones since
that's what he wanted to see. Two minutes there and he's whining that he's
hungry. Run back downstairs and take forever to get lunch. Starts whining
that he wants to see the dinosaurs -Run all the way back up there. Nephew:
"I'm bored". Okay, so let's look at the African animals, etc. Nephew:
"I'm bored". OKAY, let's go to the hall of Marine Life. Nephew: "I"m
bored". OKAY, WE'RE LEAVING.
I'm glad you had a great experience. I love it there. My daughter's Girl
Scout troop is thinking about doing "A Night at the Museum" there where they
have a slumber party and the kids stay over night (with the moms too, of
course). How cool will that be?!?! :)

I'm glad you had a great experience. I love it there. My daughter's Girl
Scout troop is thinking about doing "A Night at the Museum" there where
they have a slumber party and the kids stay over night (with the moms too,
of course). How cool will that be?!?! :)

I remember having a 'sleep over' in the local mall with my oldest son's
cub scout troop. Nothing like spending the night trying to sleep on a
rock-hard floor! If you spend a night at the museum, don't forget to
throw the bone!

We have just returned from a visit to the American Museum of Natural
History. It has been several years since my last visit there, and a
first for my younger (ages 8, 12) children. And, yes, the trip was
inspired by seeing "Night at the Museum" several months ago.

My
daughter particularly liked the Human Evolution exhibit. She was
surprised at how incomplete many fossil finds are, especially one as
famous as 'Lucy.'

Along with
the Gideon Bible stickers, I also purchased a copy of Julia Sweeney's
CD, "Letting Go of God", and a T-shirt with Margaret Sanger's famous
motto, "No Gods. No Masters." printed on it. I am ripping the CD so I
can put it on my mp3 player. I can't wait to listen to it.

The museum's a cool place, isn't it? I was there back in February,
though
I'll NEVER go again with my nephew. Run up to the dinosaur bones since
that's what he wanted to see. Two minutes there and he's whining that
he's
hungry. Run back downstairs and take forever to get lunch. Starts
whining
that he wants to see the dinosaurs -Run all the way back up there.

That brings back a lot of memories. When I was growing up and living in
New York, The Museum of Natural History and Hayden Planetarium were two
of my favorite haunts. The first time I visited the museum, I couldn't
have been more than six or seven. I was so awed by the exhibits,
especially the dinosaurs, that I think then and there I made up my mind
to go into science and learn more about the earth and the universe.

I have a recording of Dr. Carl Sagan giving a talk which included his
early introduction to astronomy. He wondered about the stars, but
everyone he asked just told him, "they are lights in the sky." What
struck me was when he said that he was puzzled as to why nobody but him
thought it was an interesting question.
A lot of people lose interest in the wonders of the world around them.
Perhaps religion is an attempt to hang on to that wonder? I think that is
why I like scientists more than priests.

Except that scientists look at the skies and what's on and under the
earth. Priests only look at their ancient books.

I haven't seen one in years (whistles innocently, tends to bonfire..)

The life-size blue whale sculpture is as impressive as ever. My daughter
particularly liked the Human Evolution exhibit. She was surprised at how

I loved the hall of gemstones (being with a group of fewllow RPG
players, we immediately began planning our heist, stopped on by ourt
lack of grav belts, plasma weapons, and a starship for a quick
getaway.)
One of my favorite pictures was taken in the foyer with the Allosaurus
and Apatosurus skeletons. I lay down on the florr directly under the
Apatosaurus' head, and took a shot straight up. I called it "Our
Distant Ancestors' View Of the Dinosaurs"

We made it a point to visit the Hayden Planetarium. I brought along a
copy of Dr. Tyson's new book, Death by Black Hole, for him to autograph
for me. Dr. Tyson was not there during our visit, but they promised he

The Rose Space Center/Hayden Planetarium was really our main reason
for going. (Being geeks, after all.) Very nice faciliy.

My wife was extremely amused that my two favorite souveniers from my
NYC trip are a Hayden planetarium t-shirt and a reciept from The
Compleat Strategist on 33rd (gaming geek heaven.) I have that framed.

It is too bad you did not let us know. I would have pointed you to my
favorite store: Maxilla and Mandible
(http://www.maxillaandmandible.com/). Small, dark, and full of the
coolest stuff in the world. Bones and fossils and just way cool stuff.
Oh, and if someone visits AMNH I recommend Calle Ocho, a block away,
for lunch. Just wonderful food. And free sangria with Sunday brunch.
