You know, in my 45 years I've heard a lot of euphemisms intended to replace
the phrase "have sex with," but this is the first time I've heard the

40 years. They weigh less, an infantryman can carry a lot more

size truck. There are limits, though. Go too small, and you either can't
control it under recoil, or it won't punch a big enough hole in
something far enough away to let you kill the "enemy" before he kills
you. Aircraft do seem to be getting larger, though, as do the bombs they
drop.
In any case, a tendency toward rape is probably an inevitable
consequence of the dehumanized, agressive, amoral mindset the military
conditions people to have. You've gotta take these weak, milquetoasty
kids off the street and make killers of them, for successful military
outcomes to occur. The natural tendency is to:
a. not particularly want to kill people you've never even met and,
b. to run away when the ***** hits the fan.
In the process of squeezing that out of them and conditioning rigid
adherence to authority and hierarchy, recruits are often coarsened
immeasurably. I've suspected the "boot camp" regimens it became
fashionable to impose upon young, petty offenders last decade made no
sense whatsoever, for precisely that reason.

No, it describes at least half. People who can be shocked by swearing.
People who can't follow directions. People that don't like exercise.
People who haven't been in fights. Even the swishily effeminate. The
first thing you do in basic is threaten them with something even worse,
like Leavenworth, should they refuse to get with the program. Only the
worst sociopaths and the most wimpy of the wimps are gonna fail. Maybe 2
or 3 out of a platoon. Platoons in basic being rather larger than they
are in normal military practice, this is 10% or less. The people who
come in the door of the recruiting office aren't quite the same as the
people who are serving in a front line unit. Did you notice my point
about conditioning? You have to be conditioned to be different in the
military than you are on the block. Otherwise, you can't accomplish the
mission. People who shoot others on the street are undesirable, as they
can't be relied upon to follow orders. I'd say you were the one with

I don't necessarily condemn what the military does. In the civilian
context it's ugly stuff, but sometimes you have to do what you have to
do. Given the nature of the business of warfare though, I think we
should be damned sure it's really necessary before we do it. There are
things like what happened at Abu Ghraib that are clearly excessive and
unnecessary, and not just the soldiers involved, but the officers who
allowed such a failure of discipline to occur, should be in the brig.

first thing you do in basic is threaten them with something even worse,
like Leavenworth, should they refuse to get with the program. Only the

or 3 out of a platoon. Platoons in basic being rather larger than they
are in normal military practice, this is 10% or less. The people who
come in the door of the recruiting office aren't quite the same as the
people who are serving in a front line unit. Did you notice my point
about conditioning? You have to be conditioned to be different in the
military than you are on the block. Otherwise, you can't accomplish the
mission. People who shoot others on the street are undesirable, as they
can't be relied upon to follow orders. I'd say you were the one with
little other than a romanticized picture of what the military is.

The sad truth is that it takes those who are willing to do nasty deeds in
the dark of night so the rest of us can sit back in freedom and condemn
the
actions of those kind of people.
I don't necessarily condemn what the military does. In the civilian
context it's ugly stuff, but sometimes you have to do what you have to
do. Given the nature of the business of warfare though, I think we
should be damned sure it's really necessary before we do it. There are
things like what happened at Abu Ghraib that are clearly excessive and
unnecessary, and not just the soldiers involved, but the officers who
allowed such a failure of discipline to occur, should be in the brig.

Amateur shrinks aside, about a year ago I saw a local production of
Aristophane's play _Lysistrata_. It started with a group of people in
contemporary military uniforms marching on stage chanting a military
tune of the sort soldiers use. The words were "This is my rifle, this
is my gun; one is for killing, the other for fun."
If you guys want to avoid the Freudian wisecracks, maybe you should
change your tune(s). :-)
For those who aren't up on Greek theater, _Lysistrata_ is about how
the women of Athens put an end to a very long and bloody conflict by
calling a sex strike. Naturally, it works, with the men getting more
and more desperate (they use props under the togas to given the men
