Religious Liberty Watchdog Group Says Pryor Is Gift To Religious Right
Activists
The Bush administration's crusade to pack the federal courts with
extremists scored another victory today with the Senate's confirmation
of William Pryor, said Americans United for Separation of Church and
State.
Quickly following Janice Rogers Brown's confirmation, the Senate late
today voted 53-45 to approve the former Alabama attorney general for a
lifetime appointment on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Americans United had urged the Senate to reject Pryor's nomination,
noting his long track record of attacking the First Amendment
principle of church-state separation.
"The federal courts are becoming increasingly tilted toward the far
right and today's action in the Senate will add to that imbalance,"
said the Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United.
"Pryor, like a disturbing number of recent judicial appointments, has
revealed a desire to seriously undercut the protections of many of our
nation's most cherished fundamental freedoms."
In letters and a report to senators, Americans United detailed Pryor's
fervid support of former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy
Moore's battle to keep an enormous Ten Commandments monument housed
within the state's Judicial Building.
AU's documentation also cited numerous speeches and interviews by
Pryor that reveal his record of consistent opposition to the
separation of church and state and subverting religious pluralism.
At a rally in 1997 for Moore, Pryor told a gathering of thousands that
God had chosen Christians "to save our country and save our courts."
As attorney general, Pryor took the unusual step of appointing three
attorneys to represent Moore in his federal court fight in support of
the 2.5-ton Commandments monument.
At the time, Pryor told a local newspaper that he looked "forward to
providing a vigorous defense of the Ten Commandments and feel strongly
that the display of the Ten Commandments in the rotunda of the
judicial building does not violate the First Amendment."
The defense Pryor offered Moore was far more outrageous than it was
vigorous. At one point the Pryor-appointed attorneys argued before the
11th Circuit that display of the Decalogue was not law and therefore
could not violate the First Amendment's command to refrain from
creating laws "respecting an establishment of religion." Those
attorneys also proclaimed that public schools could teach that America
acts under the sovereignty of the Judeo-Christian God without
breaching the wall of separation.
The 11th Circuit, however, upheld a U.S. district judge's order that
the monument did in fact violate the First Amendment and must be
removed from public display. The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear
the 11th Circuit's ruling in Glassroth v. Moore.
"Pryor is a hero to the nation's Religious Right activists, who have
strived to destroy church-state separation," Lynn added. "Today's
Senate action was a gift to those activists, and a setback to
defenders of religious liberty."

about the importance of church-state separation in safeguarding
religious freedom.

the votes because the electorate fell for such intellectual snake-oil
as Saddam being behind 9/11 or gay marriage being more important
than unparalled budget deficits.

I take it, then, that you're one who still believes Saddam was involved in 9/11 --
even though the Bushies themselves have backed off from that claim?
