An atheist at church |
Today I went to see my mother sing in her choir at her new church.
This is a Presbyterian church, which is a new thing to me. I grew up
catholic and have attended methodist churches and a few other types,
but this one was a bit different.
This service had seven readings, each with music after it. (!) In
catholic churches, there are usually only three, so I was surprised by
that. What really got me was that the readings that were chosen
seemed to show god as being evil. I haven't been to church, besides
for weddings, since I realized I was an atheist three years ago. But
I always thought that they would choose the bible verses that
portrayed god as good.
Ok, so first we have god finding out that Adam had eaten the fruit and
the "original" sin. I have always seen this one as god being the
parent who tells the teenager where the alcohol is kept and not to
ever have friends over to drink the alcohol and then leaves for the
weekend. Of course the kid will drink. God tempted Adam. Not to
mention, god is omniscient and knew Adam would do it. And, he created
Adam and I assume his personality, including his curiosity. Couldn't
he keep watching and yell at Eve right when she reached for the fruit?
It also pisses me off that it's all the woman's fault.
Then we have god rewarding Abraham for his obedience. Wasn't this
where he agreed to KILL his SON for god?!?! Yeah hooray! What kind of
***** agrees to this?! I would never harm my child for any reason I
don't care who told me to do it! Of course in church, they don't talk
about what Abraham did to deserve to be rewarded.
Then we have some prophesies, then the virgin Mary story. Here's
where my mind started wandering. Mary's a virgin. She becomes
pregnant due to god. I'm going to assume that an egg cell can begin
developing without a sperm here. Jesus would be haploid, but do you
really need two of every chromosome? So he has one of each, all his
would be from Mary. No problem, right? But he wouldn't have a Y
chromosome. Jesus would be a girl? Hmmm.... I guess god put a sperm
into Mary by magic. I don't get it.
Anyway, now that I went to church, I think I'm going to be pressured
to attend regularly. I won't, but it could get ugly. My dad knows
I'm an atheist, but I don't think mom does. I guess it will come out
sooner or later.
Does anyone else get depressed when dealing directly with the
sillyness of christianity? It really bothers me that so many people
think all of this is real. It sometimes seems so hopeless to try to
teach their children about science when they clearly can't think
logically. Anyway, that's my rant for the month.

Heh. The thing is, Presbyterians are Calvinists. They believe in
complete predestination. In fact, their outlook is among the most
gloomy, depressing ones in the Christian world. And they're conditioned
from birth to think of it as "good." I've talked religion with only one
Calvinist, and it was such a high-powered drag that I was very relieved
when he got deployed to the War on Terror. Icky.

Most likely. Speaking from experience, being out of the atheism closet
is a pretty good thing, overall. It took some nerve for me at first, but
after a while, it wasn't bad at all.

I go to church with my wife every week. At times, it gets on my nerves,
this Lutheran stuff I get on a regular basis. But the pastor there is
such a cool, interesting fellow that I've developed a good friendship
with him, and church isn't all that bad. Most of the time, at least...

Lisa my guess is the majority of 'believers' from all religions went
that route by following their parents. Me included. You have woken up,
again like me and I wish you good luck. You could have problems getting
the understanding of your parents so it might be better to take things
real slow.

I read (and I forget where now) that the whole garden of eden story was
symbolic of the transition from a hunter gather society to an agro
society. The theory was that women developed agroculture and this was
the "knowledge" that destroyed the hunter gatherer way of life that
males viewed as paradise.

That's interesting, no Y chromosome eh? When my daughter was 5 we were
having a conversation about various gods. After seeing Zeus she wanted
to know why Jesus didn't have "privates." She was definately onto
something. I think Jesus was delibertly feminized by the church to offer
greater appeal to women in order to compete with goddesses.

Yeah, some days are better than others. I seem to be getting lots of
glurge "reason for the season" e-mail from folks who should know better.
I have trouble understanding just how some of these folks can function
in the real world. Their way of thinking has become just so strange to
me. I've got to come back to this group to be reassured that there are
still thinking folks out there :-) --george

Well, according to the Bible, Jesus was "like us in every way, except
without sin".
Therefore, He had "privates. But they were, well, private.

In Genesis Ab is one of God's fav people and you wonder how this
reflects on his creator. First you find out he is very rich and then
after reading a little further you find out how. Pimping his extremely
beautiful 70 year old wife/half sister to kings "accidentally".

Yep.
Yeah hooray! What kind of ***** agrees to this?!
A brain-dead fundy.
I would never harm my child for any reason I don't care who told me to do it!
That's just because you're sane.
Then we have some prophesies, then the virgin Mary story. Here's
where my mind started wandering. Mary's a virgin. She becomes
pregnant due to god. I'm going to assume that an egg cell can begin
developing without a sperm here.
Yeah, but not in humans.
Anyway, now that I went to church, I think I'm going to be pressured
to attend regularly. I won't, but it could get ugly. My dad knows
I'm an atheist, but I don't think mom does. I guess it will come out
sooner or later.
Do you live with them? Are you an adult or a child?
Does anyone else get depressed when dealing directly with the
sillyness of christianity?
No more so than with the silliness of Peter Pan or SpongeBob
SquarePants. (One of the favorite shows of one of my great nephews.)
It really bothers me that so many people think all of this is real.
I came to that realization (that people thought it's real) when I was
about 5. It didn't bother me then and it doesn't bother me now.
It sometimes seems so hopeless to try to
teach their children about science when they clearly can't think
logically.
You're a science teacher? Just remember that not everyone is smart
enough (smart = ability to learn) to learn everything being taught.
If you're a terrible teacher it's your fault that they aren't
learning, but if you aren't, it isn't. You can't replace 10 years of
dumbing down they get at home in 10 months.

I agree! I dunno if there's God. And I'm not a Christianism.But I
think it's better to trust something and learn something.

Yes, I'm a high school science teacher. Many people think they are
not smart enough to learn science, but that's just because of the
common misconception that science is a "hard" subject to learn. It
does take a different manner of thinking (problem solving) than
subjects where memorizing is the goal, but it's really not harder.

your own choice.

A basic science knowledge, enough to not fall for creationism, doesn't
take much more than learning by rote.
But, if you look at some posts on usenet, they think spelling and
grammar are "too hard" for them too.

The very term 'almighty;' is a dead giveaway to the early times of Christianity
