An atheist church? |
What if I started a church that practiced and studied atheism? Would I be
able to get all the perks? The tax breaks, and as the pastor, not having
to pay SS, etc.
It would be practicing faith, because there clearly is no evidence either
way that god exists, so it takes faith to be an atheist.
I would discuss my views pertaining to my faith, and discuss the myths of
the bible, and I'd pass the plate and take donations that would cover the
expenses of the church and my salary, same as any church.
What are the laws for a church to be recognized?
Pardon if this has been discussed before.

Most normal people can distinguish when a person is stating an opinion, or
stating a fact.
"You are paranoid and angry" is an opinion.
"The sun rises in the East" is a statement of fact.
Hope this helps.

Gary, for what it's worth, I think some people here have been harder on
you than what you deserved. Don't take it personally. This group
includes a much higher than average selection of people who've taken a
lot of abuse from religiously-minded folk, and who have a lower than
average tolerance for things that smack of religion. I've taken my
share of abuse here, but I've also found that there are a number of folk
here who will give me a fair and intelligent--if sometimes
pointed--critique of my ideas. My advice would be to go ahead and post
here, and if you get back an unduly hostile reply, just ignore it and
focus on the ones who give you the kind of reply you want.
On the other hand, sometimes it's kinda fun to match retort for retort,
and if you've a mind to enter the lists for that kind of joust, you'll
find plenty of opportunities here.
Just be selective, and remember that your choice of what you respond to
determines what your experience here will be like. But bring extra
flame-retardant undies along, just in case :)

I tried to be appreciative of the people like yourself that gave serious,
non-hostile replies.
Usenet is not for wimps.

My interests?
I asked some questions and debated my opinions about atheists with
atheists in an atheist NG.
Well there is where your problem starts.
You see; We don't give a *****. for your opinion of atheists.
But, out of a desire to correct the erroneous information, put about by xtian
fanatics, we try to explain, as we have done, over and over again, times beyond
counting.
We have been asked, on occasion, by people who genuinely do not know
what an atheist is, but who have been given a xtian fanatic's definition of what
an atheist should be.
These are usually easily settled.
However, the most common questions come from the religious fanatics, who are
easily identified by their style of questioning, and oft times, by their very
assertions of atheism of agnosticism.
Such assertions as " I am/was an atheist, I hate/d Jesus/god", is typical of
someone who is talking through his arse. So also is "I am an agnostic, I don't
know what to believe", and various other claims along the same lines.
Where such assertions are not made, the fanatic gives him self away in other
ways.
He will claim ignorance, and when his question is answered, will deny the
answer, and give us, instead, a fundy xtian, definition, or will give us xtian
fanatic, arguments, as to why *our definition, is wrong.
Most fundies, give us a mixture of these.
A mixture, is what you have been giving us.
One of the reasons that they do this, as I have mentioned before, is to try and
refute our argument, that an educated atheist, will not, or perhaps more
correctly, cannot, convert to xtianity.
In order to refute us, they come in here, and claim to be an atheist. They then
behave in a manner which leaves no doubt in our minds, as to what they are.
Some, have enough intelligence to realise when the jig is up, and quietly fade
away. Others persist, and have the "miraculous conversion", that they
originally planned.
....Much to no-one's surprise.
And some just keep trying to convince us.
I had some questions into my own atheistic
leanings.
Which, when answered, you questioned or denied the answers, with xtian fanatic
arguments.
If some of the regulars that are pointing fingers at me have some sort of
omniscient insight into my supposed ulterior motives here,
There you go again, those same childish, fundy arguments, denying anything that
you do not like
I suggest they
share them with me.
I believe that I have.
Twice now.
I find people professing to omniscience fascinating.
Once more, you utter your typically dishonest, fundy assertions.
No one is making any claims for omniscience. All that is being said is that we
have had years of experience with xtians, in these NGs.
Their attitudes, and arguments are well known to us.
You are making fundy arguments, and showing fundy attitudes.
In these groups, we apply a simple test: If it walks like a duck, and quacks
like a duck, then until we have evidence to the contrary, we will keep the
oranges handy.

Except for the people that claim to know I am dishonest and yet have no

Is this not the definition of "omniscience"?
All that is being said is that we

And I challenged all the people pointing fingers at me to look through my

Funny nobody came up with any?
Pardon me for being an atheist agnostic that doesn't think all theists are
insane or something.
Is this a prerequisite to being an atheist?

You didn't LOOK for evidence to the contrary, is my point.

then going around thinking that if I burn some incense, Satan's going to

Amazing to me considering just a few months ago I was asked in the Laura
forum why I hate Christians so much.

you're saying very well because of all the noise in their heads.
I'm simply trying to point out that some of their behaviours is VERY
similar to the behaviours that drives them so crazy about theists.
Their minds are made up about something and are too lazy to seek the
truth... thus they ATTACK.
Others have been very helpful.

So inventing positions for us, that we do not hold, is not dishonest?
Interesting.
And the others that claim to know my
intentions and yet have no proof of such.
If you come into my garden, and start telling what I like, do not like, or what
you think should be there, I am not going to ask what your intentions are, but
I am sure that you can surmise what my reaction will be.
<continued below>
Is this not the definition of "omniscience"?
I can add a string of figures, or read a page of text, and use the result. I can
recognise just about every wild life form, found in the British Isles, plant
animal or fungii, and list it's effects, eceological and other, under most
circumstances, and use the information.
Does any of that, make me omniscient?
Of course not. All it does is show that I am capable of observation, and of
making predictions based on such observation.
So why does the simple recognition of specific traits in a human, make me, or
anyone else, omniscient?
All that is being said is that we
have had years of experience with xtians, in these NGs.
Which has seemed to turn some of you into bitter, angry, abusive people.
Once more, you make the kind of assertions, normally associated with xtian
fanatics. Anybody who does not conform to their architype, or take their crap,
lying down, is "bitter, angry, and abusive".
It seems to me the theists are winning.
It always seems thus, to theists.
Their attitudes, and arguments are well known to us.
You are making fundy arguments, and showing fundy attitudes.
And I challenged all the people pointing fingers at me to look through my

Perhaps no one is interested in what you did yesterday, only in what you are
doing today.
Pardon me for being an atheist agnostic that doesn't think all theists are

Define, "atheist", and "agnostic". Your definition.
In these groups, we apply a simple test: If it walks like a duck, and quacks

You didn't LOOK for evidence to the contrary, is my point.
True. But then; Why should we?
What evidence is there?
Your mind was already made up IS MY POINT. Does this behaviour remind you

I don't know.
Remind me again: Who is it I dispise?
we will keep the

Oh dear.
The whoosh, you heard, was Duck la Oranj, going right over your head.
