Object: An atheist's problem.
THE ATHEISTS ANGUISH
I wish I had a God, a good God.
One to whom I could pray.
To believe it would quell injustice
or give someone solace
would be Nirvana.
To imagine, that because of me
needy received succour - Utopia.
But this, much too easy. To Pray -
ask what you wish of your Genie.
Praise him - call him extraordinary!
To request and receive any treasure,
Much - much too easy.
Knowing its all time wasted
gives me no pleasure.
If I were a Jew no one would laugh
if I banged my head on a wall,
just - 'temporarily' -
to relieve the wrath I feel
seeing religions segregating us all.
If I believed in 'Christ' and his teaching,
I could look forward to him returning.
To pacify children when they are crying.
To placate me when I'm dying.
But 'two thousand years' is too long to wait.
How many billions have faithfully waited?
Praying and hoping until too late?
Think of the atheist with his dilemma,
He, with no dreams
of something for nothing.
He knows, when things go wrong
and hope is rare the easy way out
Is to say a prayer.
But - That's not to say he doesn't care.

I wish I had a God, a good God.

I wouldn't know a good poem if it bit me on the *****,
but I think I get what you are trying to express.
A fatal problem with the god concept is the 'problem
of evil'. Well, there is no doubt that evil exists.
If there were a good god, it would fix or prevent
the evil. When I see the US leading an elective war,
Iraqis mutilating Americans, Israelis murdering Palestinians,
and Palestinians murdering Israelis, I wish there were
a benevolent potent power to stop it.
A truely benevolent god would be a useful thing,
not as a master or object of worship, but as a
fixer of evil.
Unfortunately it is clear that no such thing exists.

It seems that some read the title and couldn't see past it.
This writer is obviously an atheists.
I am sure their are many atheists that wish they had a God. Not like
the one portrayed in the Bible of course.
I would prefer a "good God", as the writer puts it.
Unfortunately, when analyzed closely, the whole idea of a parent in
the sky is irrational.

No it isn't.

I, too, wish I had a god.

Why?

A perfect being would make morals so easy.

Do you then consider that blind obedience to an entity, no matter how
perfect, is morality?
Perhaps you should find a god.

An
upcoming armageddon would make environmentalism so easy. An omni-benevolent
protector would make the future so easy.
