An Eye For An Eye: Details Of The Atheist Killing Christian |
From the Sunshine Coast Daily, 24/12/2004
BIBLE-TOTING KILLER JAILED FOR 18 YEARS
A self-proclaimed Christian who went berserk and killed a Woodford man when
the man and his wife told him they were atheists has been sentenced to 18
years jail.
Justice Ros Atkinson yesterday refused to hand down an indefinite prison
term for Ashley John Appoo saying she did not believe rehabilitation was
impossible.
The self-confessed killer, whose Bible was one of his most precious
possessions, will stay in jail until at least 2015, when he may finally
become eligible for parole.
It was a heady mix of alcohol, drugs and different religious beliefs that
triggered the night of frenzied violence and terror in the Stony Creek home,
west of Woodford.
Mr Appoo, a drifter heading to Goondiwindi, was hitch hiking west of
Woodford on November 17, 2001, when Alois McDonald offered him a drink,
saying she would return him to the D'Aguilar Highway that afternoon.
Mr Appoo joined Mrs McDonald, now 53 and her 56 year old husband John for
an afternoon of drinking. He stayed the night, smoking marijuana and the
trio continued drinking the next day.
But at 8pm on November 18, the scene transformed into a harrowing house of
horrors.
Taking exception to Mrs McDonald's atheist views, Mr Appoo accosted the pair
in the living room and yelled racist taunts before violently assaulting Mrs
McDonald. When Mr McDonald stepped in to help his wife, Mr Appoo punched
him to the ground, then started stomping on and kicking him.
The couple pleaded for Mr Appoo to stop, telling him to take their car and
leave, but when Mr Appoo went outside he didn't take the car.
Instead he grabbed an axe off the woodpile and returned to the lounge room,
where he began bludgeoning the McDonalds so hard the axe handle broke.
Mr McDonald ultimately died from a spleen haemorrhage, the court heard. Mrs
McDonald was seriously injured.
Justice Atkinson said Mr Appoo had a mental disorder resulting in irrational
and explosive anger after he was hit in the head with a didgeridoo, but that
did not make him unable to control his actions, she said.
He was sentence to 18 years prison for manslaughter, committing grievous
bodily harm and possessing a dangerous drug.
He was also listed as a serious violent offender, which means he will have
to complete 80% of the sentence before being eligible for parole.
Mr Appoo has already spent three years in prison on remand.

That couple was just stupid. The man should go free.

The argument that everything had a Creator because it's too complicated, is
about as reasonable as saying that it couldn't have been created since it's
too complicated.
It's about like saying that a super flea created a dog. Then
the good fleas go to a great dog in the sky, while the bad unbelieving fleas
are scratched off into a super rug to be forever hungry. If you think dogs
weren't created by a Great Flea then you are an atheist flea.
