Anger as cardinal in sex-abuse scandal says Mass for Pope

The mourning for Pope John Paul II took a controversial
turn yesterday when a disgraced American cardinal said a
memorial Mass for him in St Peter's Basilica.
Cardinal Bernard Law, who resigned as Archbishop of
Boston over a cover up of sex abuse by his priests,
celebrated the Mass without incident, but two protesters
were earlier escorted out of the Vatican by police.

The acrimony provoked by the cardinal's appearance was in
sharp contrast to the grief and dignified worship on
display at the Pope's funeral on Friday.
It was also a reminder of one of the darker chapters of
John Paul II's pontificate - the scandal of the
paedophilia of some priests in North America and the
legal battles between victims and the Church.
The total amount of compensation paid to victims now
stands at £450 million. Some dioceses were forced to sell
property and close churches to raise enough money.
Two female leaders of Survivors Network of the Abused by
Priests were led away when they tried to hand out
leaflets in St Peter's Square.
One of them, Barbara Blaine said: "Cardinal Law is being
put in a position of prominence which is rubbing salt in
our wounds."
Holding up a picture of herself as a 12-year-old, when
she had allegedly been abused by a priest in Ohio, she
said: "We are the sons and daughters of the Catholic
family who have been raped, sodomised and abused."
Cardinal Law said the Mass in his capacity as archpriest
of Rome's prestigious Basilica of St Mary Major, an
appointment which, following the fiasco of his departure
from Boston, shocked many Catholics.
The cardinal stepped down as the archbishop of what was
once America's foremost Catholic diocese in 2002 when it
emerged that he had moved priests accused of abusing
minors from parish to parish to avoid bad publicity.
As a cardinal who is less than 80 years old, he will be
taking part in next week's conclave to elect John Paul
II's successor. One of the first tasks expected to await
the next Pope will be putting his predecessor on the path
to sainthood, a key Vatican official said yesterday.
Archbishop Edward Nowak, secretary of the congregation of
the causes of saints, said that the new pontiff, when
elected, was likely to "rapidly proclaim John Paul II a
saint", perhaps in just six months' time.
Under Vatican rules, the procedure for beatification -
the main stop on the road to sainthood - can not begin
less than five years after a candidate's death. Moving
from beatification to canonisation can take years, and
even centuries.
However, a Pope can waive the rules and, in exceptional
circumstances, even bypass the beatification process, by
directly proclaiming a candidate.
John Paul II made an exception in the case of Mother
Teresa of Calcutta. The process of her beatification
began less than five years after her death in 1997 and
she was beatified in 2003.
Thousands who attended last Friday's funeral chanted
"santo, santo!" (saint, saint) and "santo, subito"
(immediately a saint) during the ceremony.
Once the next Pope had decided that John Paul II's cause
should be fast-tracked, all that would be needed to
canonise him directly would be "adequate information",
showing that he had led a saintly life and had been
responsible for posthumous miracles, Archbishop Nowak
said.

Actually, I believe that's wrong. The beatification
process can be opened up one year after death.
Anyhow, what exactly did Cardinal Law do? I could be
wrong but this smells to me like another campaign by the
left to destroy the Church.

Bernard Law ignored, covered up, and shuffled around
priests in the Archdiocese of Boston who were pedophiles
and pederasts. Shanley, Porter, and Geoghan are the most
infamous. Geoghan was murdered in prison by another
prisoner, Porter died, and Shanley was sentenced to
prison a few months ago.
This is not a scandal fabricated by the left.

The terrorist mission of Jesus stated in the Christian bible:
"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not so send
peace, but a sword.
"For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the
daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in

"And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
