Another Conservative Jumping Off of Bush's Sinking Ship Part XVIII (re: Why Are NeoCons so Incompetent?) |
"In 'Four Trials', John Edwards has written movingly of people who
were terribly wronged, and whom he helped seek some measure of justice
with great skill, determination, and genuine compassion. He shows a
perceptive appreciation in these accounts for the strength of his
clinets' character. And in the loving portrait of his son, Wade, and
the deeply touching account of his losss, John reveals the strength of
his own chracter and gives the reader a look beyond a political
biography into the heart of a good man."

It was higher than Bush. Furthermore, the only reason Bush went to

Furthermore, you are doing it again. Why bring Gore into the argument?
Gore has never been President, and he was clearly smarter than Bush

I went to graduate school at a much less prestigious school than Yale
and if anyone in my graduate program got more than one C, they were to
be put on academic probation. The only people I know who did that
dropped out of the program. I find it hard to believe that Yale would
have lower standards for any of its graduate students unless maybe a
rich daddy helped tilt the scales in his son's favor.

were terribly wronged, and whom he helped seek some measure of justice
with great skill, determination, and genuine compassion. He shows a
perceptive appreciation in these accounts for the strength of his
clinets' character. And in the loving portrait of his son, Wade, and
the deeply touching account of his losss, John reveals the strength of
his own chracter and gives the reader a look beyond a political
biography into the heart of a good man."
-John McCain
McCain is an odd duck. He's certainly not a liberal but, at the same
time, he rarely toes the Republican party line.
Although I disagree with a significant number of his stances, I must
admit that, at the very least, he is a man who has a great deal of
personal integrity and one who doesn't tend to allow the expediences
of politics stand in the way of his convictions.
Although it would almost certainly have been a bad idea, I am actually
a bit disappointed that him and Kerry didn't end up running under the
same ticket. It would have, at the very least, been an interesting
combination.

Personally, I was really hoping that he'd switch parties
and accept the Veep slot.
However, I had to admit that he'd only be valuable if
they locked him in a hotel room and didn't allow him
to say or do ANYTHING.
I'm sorry, I really am, but McCain is a weasel. Did you
know he was against the first Gulf war? I mean, no, he
did vote for it. And, yeah, he'd tell you today that it was
the right thing to do. But, when Clinton was President
he decided that using the military was the wrong thing to
do, and that he was mistaken when he voted with Bush
senior for war in the Gulf. He said so on CNN, when
he was defending his opposition to Clinton's use of the
military after supporting Bush senior's use of the military.
He flip-flops at the drop of a hat, every bit as much as
Bush, and he's every bit as corrupt. Not only is he the
only member of the "Keating Five" still in office, but
keep in mind that John McCain chairs the Senate
Commerce Committee:
"In McCain's case, many of the companies loaning out
their corporate jets not only are large contributors to his
campaign, but they also fall under the oversight of the
Senate Commerce Committee."
http://www.opensecrets.org/alerts/v5/alertv5_37.asp
McCain would have been extremely valuable to Kerry
as a symbol, as an embarrassment to the Republican
party and as an image, but he's a walking contradiction
that couldn't help but feed the opposition ammunition
every time he opened his mouth.

Bush, and he's every bit as corrupt. Not only is he the
only member of the "Keating Five" still in office, but
keep in mind that John McCain chairs the Senate
Commerce Committee:
I watched every minute of the Keating 5 Senate Ethics Committee hearings.
I came away with two lasting impressions. The real criminal in the whole
deal
was Edwin J. Gray, the former head of the Federal Home Loan Bank Board.
He named, Glenn, Cranston, DeConcini, Riegle and McCain while being
questioned by the House Banking Committee on the failure of Keating
Savings & Loan which his agency was supposed to oversee.
Keating gave a lot of money to a lot of people both in the Congress and
the Senate. Why did Gray name only those five - because each of them had
either tried to have him removed from his job because of incompetency or
blocked him from getting a better job.
Gray accused all of them of coming to him and trying to have the Keating
investigation stopped. However, he could never name times, places or
any details about the conditions under which any of them actually made
this request. When asked by DeConcini's lawyer why he didn't report
this directly to the Senate Ethics Committee - Gray, a 25 year veteran
of Washington based jobs, said he didn't know there was such a thing
as the Senate Ethics Committee. That will give you a clue as to how
out-of-it this guy was.
All the senators were Democrats and the supposedly impartial counsel
was Bennett (Bill Bennett's brother), a Republican who was anything
but impartial and tried to get each of these guys stuck with something
but nothing stuck. There was no evidence.
The only one there was some evidence against was McCain. But the
evidence showed only that he had received a free plane ride from
Keating and also a cruise but no evidence came to light that he
tried to interfere in an investigation. Okay, I agree that was bad but
let's not be
naive. I'm sure this sort of stuff goes on all the time in both parties.
However, the Senate Ethics Comm. couldn't do anything about the
evidence against McCain because he wasn't a senator - he was at that
time just a congressman. Right there, there is something wrong with the
system.
But the big bad Keating 5 label followed those guys everywhere and I believe
that they really didn't do what Gray said.. I think he was lying.
As far as I'm concerned, the Keating 5 was a big boondoggle invented by
Edwin J. Gray to get some of the heat off himself. Obviously it worked.
Who in the public remembers Edwin J. Gray, except me?

Bull. Starting next to his photo, count down about 10 or 11
paragraphs:
http://www.doney.net/aroundaz/celebrity/mccain_john.htm
However, he could never name times, places or any details
about the conditions under which any of them actually made

Then you've just identified another MAJOR flip-flop from McCain,
because what he said back then was:
"I was judged eventually, after three years, of using, quote, poor
judgment, and I agree with that assessment.''
