ROOKFIELD, Wis., March 12 (AP) - A gunman opened fire Saturday at a church
service being held at a hotel, killing seven people before taking his own
life, the authorities said.
Officers found four people and the gunman dead when they arrived around 1
p.m. at the Sheraton hotel. Three others died later at a hospital, said
Chief Daniel Tushaus of the police department in Brookfield, a suburb west
of Milwaukee.
"There is nobody else being sought at this time as a suspect," he said.
The victims were all in the same room at the hotel, Chief Tushaus said.
The suspect, a man of about 45 who was armed with a handgun, was affiliated
with the church, which had been meeting at the hotel every Saturday morning
for four or five years.
Chief Tushaus did not identify the victims but gave approximate ages. Two
boys ages 15 and 17, a 72-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman died at the
hotel. Three men from 44 to 58 years old died later at a hospital.
Four other people were hospitalized in serious condition.
Some hotel guests remained locked in their rooms after the police surrounded
the building and would not allow anyone to enter or leave.
Karen Suick, 48, said she arrived at the hotel Friday night with 15 players
and parents for a hockey tournament.
"One of our hockey dad's two daughters are still in there," she said. "They
called his cellphone. They were O.K., but they were told to go back to
their room."
At least two church groups were holding meetings in the hotel at the time of
the shootings, the police said.

Does anyone have an idea what his motive might have been? (Other than
being religion-crazed.)

I read today that the gunman was a heavy drinker, losing his job, and
apparently ***** about a sermon that he heard.

Where to begin. Again, god shows staggering incompetence at protecting
his fanatic faithful. It's just such a shame that if god is going to
drop the ball this way that he doesn't let this happen to Jerry Falwell
or Benny Hinn.
Anyway, I dunno if the fact that seven people were killed (not including
the gunman) was part of "gawd's plan", but I'm sure some fundy cultists
would think so. Too bad these particular fundy cultists didn't know
more about their bible, or they'd know that they can ask for sanctuary
in the temple by holding onto to the "horns of altar". Their altars
have horns, right? If not then they're just a bunch of bloody gentiles
and deserve what they get, at least according to the Book o Blood.
But I suppose that a god who could execute someone for gathering sticks
on the sabbath or kill someone for accidentally looking inside the Ark
of the Covenant while trying to prevent it from falling, would think
little of this latest atrocity.
