Another Lie in the Bible |
"All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of
men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds."
- 1Co 15:39
This is of course a lie. All "flesh" is the same! We're all built
largely from the same six basic chemicals. We more or less have the
same genes (particularly among vertebrates, which is what Corinthians
addresses above) made from the same component codons. The genes
specify the same 20 amino acids. We all have similarly constructed
mucles made in the same kind of way, similar cells, similar nervous
systems, similar blood systems.
And if the Bible lies about this, there's no reason at all to trust it
when it claims there's a god.

In college there was a physics study group I was in for a while that had a
couple of folks constantly wanted to debate the bible vs science rather than
actually study. Recognizing the text as nothing more than theologic retoric
developed over six to seven hundred years out of an amalgamation of numerous
other near east traditions, I make it a policy not to waste time doing so,
but these guys just wouldn't let it go.
I bought an extra bible and I went through and highlighted verses describing
all sorts of horrendeous deeds by god, verses that alude to and demonstrate
older native mythologies out of which yahweh arose, references to native
gods of other cultures, blatent contraditions, atrocities, mythological or
symbolic numbers (4,7,12,40,70), scientific inaccuracies and other
intresting tidbits that show native origins or reflect influences of outside
cultures rather than as something truely unique to the ancient hebrews.
At first they tried to explain away each case one by one. We didn't make it
out of Genesis before he not so much gave up on his explanations (which were
quite humerous) as realized it would have taken a year to do so. It pretty
much broke up the study group.
I still use that same bible and whenever I run across things like this I
grab it and mark it. I'll have to add that to the list, though it's getting
pretty hard to read at this point.

You need to look around for a freebie bible search type program.
You can load a bible to hard disk and cut' n 'snip and save stuff to a
text file in a directory.
Search functions allow you to look stuff up quickly.
Loads of fun.

I've done that with biblegateway.com. In combination with the highlighting
feature from Google's toolbar you can do things such as pull up the story of
noah and highlight the occurances of something like the word "seven". It
jumps right out at you where any rational person should ask themeslves why
it shows up so much.

I know perfectly rational, well educated people who lose all rationality
when it comes to religion and what they're willing to blindly swallow. It
truly believe what I read years ago, that man wants to believe in gods,
needs to believe in them because he can't accept the inevitability and
finality of his own death. The thought that he would be unconscious. Gone
forever. Anything was better than that..........

The Ark story itself is so outrageous. As if a handful of people can travel
the earth capturing all the different animals, birds, amphibians, insects...
plus know each one's diet. They then must find enough food to feed each
one of a few million creatures for months. Where would they store it on the
Ark or keep what was perishable fresh? It's hard to phantom that any

Right there with you.
I actually believe that at some point, probably post-exile when the bible
was complied, those doing so and the educated of the time were smart enough
to recognize it as mythology, but used it still as a metaphor for
rightgeousness and tied it into the geneology for consistancy in the overall
narrative. Especially when you consider how long flood myths from other
cultures survived and co-existed with the story of Noah, A.K.A. Utnapishtim.
The fact that people 2500 years later take it seriously would probably shock
them and the would scarf at the fact that they miss the point they were
trying to convey.

And it makes one wonder why this 'God' of theirs decided to 'create' both
'clean' and 'unclean' animals? Don't they see that this gives their God
the pretext to 'punish' man even more. Have you no idea how hard it was to
avoid 'unclean' animals back then -- especially* when you were starving to
death due to a God-imposed famine?
And what could "unclean" mean where animals are concerned? The so called
unclean pig may give you trichinosis but the "clean" cow can kill you with
Mad-Cow disease. Clean chickens can kill you with Salmonella........ and
the beat goes on.........
Most thinking Jews freely admit that these rules are not rational.
Every Jew I've asked told me the dietary laws are nothing more than a
test of faith. Muslims tell me the same thing.
Exactly.
And some say to me that that is the very reason that the rules do not
make sense, for if they did make sense, they would hardly be a test of
faith.
The rules are proudly displayed as anti-rational for that very reason.

If your worldview says that god has to be punishing you for bad things to
happen, you need to have a whole lot of reasons for god to punish you.
Especially when you are starving to death due to a god imposed calamity.

I won't hold poor reading comprehension against you. This is a tragic
example about how poor literacy leads people to draw wrong conclusions about
what they're trying to comprehend.
The "flesh" is referred to in these scriptures is not the same because it
doesn't have the same properties. For example, human flesh is not the same
as fish flesh or reptilian flesh, each endowed with different kinds of
scales. Flesh is never the same.
Let us reason together, Budikka666, as to why flesh cannot be the same.
Flesh is an adaptive and protective organ that covers a creature's
endoskeleton. In the case of many reptilian creatures the flesh is its
armor. Flesh must adapt to its unique environment. If fish flesh was the
same as human flesh, wouldn't holding a fish look and feel eerily like human
flesh with the characteristic smooth appearance and soft, silky feel to it?
Wouldn't fish flesh dry out in salt water if it was the same as human flesh?
If all flesh was the same, animals could not adapt to their living
conditions. Reptiles would quickly become infected with bacteria if covered
with human-like flesh. Animals in harsh environments like Africa with unique
properties that allow them to fight others of their species for dominance or
defend their turf from predators would tear each other to shreds.
Thankfully, in God's wisdom, not all flesh is the same.

They pay for the literature they take to go door to door with. At the
