Another victory for decency |
....The Parents Television Council (PTC) is praising Mitsubishi Motors for
yanking its sponsorship of the FX Network drama Nip/Tuck. The TV series,
sexually and violently graphic from its inception, has recently aired
episodes that members of the PTC and other pro-family groups have criticized
as containing gratuitously explicit sexual situations and other indecent
content. The pro-family media watchdog group provided the automaker with
descriptions of the show, and Mitsubishi executives responded in a letter,
noting that they and their company "have no desire to offend consumers" and,
with this in mind, "have decided to discontinue advertising on Nip/Tuck."
PTC President Brent Bozell says his group applauds Mitsubishi Motors for its
"courageous" decision and notes that the creators of Nip/Tuck have, over the
past three years, "devised some of the most disgusting and disturbing
storylines imaginable." He cites episodes of the show containing themes of
incest, necrophilia, rape, pedophilia, and more. "And just four episodes
into season four," Bozell points out, "Nip/Tuck reached new depths of
depravity" with a storyline about bestiality, in which the guest star
portraying a woman with an inordinate affection for her dog was none other
than the former child actor of Little House on the Prairie fame, Melissa
Gilbert. And since FX is part of most cable subscribers expanded basic
package, the PTC spokesman notes, "this scene of stomach-turning depravity
was available to children in over 75 percent of U.S. households." Bozell
says his group is calling on the remaining sponsors of Nip/Tuck to closely
examine the value of supporting "the vilest content on television" with
their advertising dollars. [Jenni Parker]

Yesterday while waiting for the start of the Cardinals-Padres game, I
was flipping through the channels. I stopped at one of the religious
channels (I don't remember what the station is called, but it's a
Catholic channel) because the shows broadcast on those stations are
often the funniest shows you'll find on TV. A children's show was on,
and in a span of about 15 minutes, I heard them tell at least 20 lies.
Yeah, that's good for the kids.
You are the absolute foul mouth liar. You, josh, you are the liar.
How do you determine that from his comment?
You want to rape little boys you homosexual pedophile
Can you prove this? What generated that comment?

You're leaving Usenet?
If only we could give him a new home...preferably somewhere farther away
than the Kuiper Belt.
What did interstellar space do to you???
As long as he's far away from any singularities, what's the problem? ;-)
Do we want him far away from singularities or stuffed into one?
I mean, according to Hawkings, there's an equal probability that he'd come
back as something useful. Maybe a nice fern...
I'd settle for a couple of Vesta-sized asteroids made of water ice, to rework
Venus into something more terrestrial...
I think it would take a bit more than that. <G>
True...since it's getting about 2.3- 2.5 times the energy from Sol that we do,
so a large sunscreen is the first priority. ;-)

And then there's the atmosphere that's composed entirely of carbon
dioxide and sulphuric acid and is so dense it would probably crush a
manned spacecraft like an eggshell (atmospheric pressure on the
surface of Venus is 90 times Earth normal), a runaway greenhouse
effect that makes Venus so hot that the surface actually glows
faintly, and the perpetual near pitch darkness (other than the dull
red glow from the 900+ degree rocks) because the clouds (composed of
pure sulphuric acid) are so thick the light can't penetrate
them........
Hmmm....searing heat, crushing pressure, perpetual darkness, the
permanent reek of sulphur...sounds a lot like that mythical place
Christians believe everyone except them is going to. Just the place to
send J Young. <G>

The entire Andromeda Galaxy doesn't want him, Centari Prime has enough
ego maniacs, and Vulcan has diplomatically informed us that they will do
unmentionable things to the anatomy of the entire human species if we
even think of it.

as containing gratuitously explicit sexual situations and other indecent
Gilbert. And since FX is part of most cable subscribers expanded basic

examine the value of supporting "the vilest content on television" with
their advertising dollars. [Jenni Parker]
I suspect another sponsor will simply step in. This show seems to
have a lot of viewers, and that is all that really matters.
