Another (Yawn) Blow to Creationists |
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/science/07/27/bc.japan.yawningchimps.ap/index.html
reveals that chimpanzees yawn just like we do, uncovering yet another
example of just how much like chimps we are (or they like us). Not
only is our DNA almost identical, most of our behaviors are, too. As
Tetsuro Matsuzawa, professor at the Primate Research Institute at
Kyoto University says int he article: "Humans have a strong belief in
our differences. Objectively, we should be one member of the apes."

startling conclusion that Professor Matsuzawa has "objectively" drawn. Could
this explain why all humans love bananas? ;-)

Peel a banana, split it lengthways, place on a microwaveable plate, microwave
for 15-20 seconds, serve with whipped cream or ice cream, and maple syrup,
crushed nuts sprinkled on top is optional.
Or, place unpeeled banana on a BBQ grill, remove when the skin is blackened,
do as above.

Crushed nuts sounds painful - unless we're crushing the nuts in these

Once again you failed to demonstrate anything but the empty space
between your ears. Congratulations.
And why is it that human males have to shave in the morning? This
creator god of yours couldn't create us with hairless faces to
differentiate us from chimpanzees with whom we share pretty much
everything? It's less than a handful of percentage points which
separate us from them. What mechanism was it which would have
prevented us and them from evolving from a common ancestor? Can you
articulate one? Can any creationist? I thought not. QED.

Indeed. We only need to know 3 things, to know that evolution occurs:
First, that mutations occur in the genetic code, second that at least
some mutations are heritable, third that at least some mutations
affect reproductive success. If those 3 things are true, evolution is
not only possible, it's inevitable. The evidence from genetics,
palaeontology, molecular biology and so on just fills in the details.

Thanks for sharing, Budikka! Our DNA is *almost* identical.
That's true, and someone who uses the handle "precision" in their
messages ought to be a little more accurate in their messages or risk
being assumed to be ignorant.
I thought humans were *almost* identical in their DNA to
dolphins and a host of other species.
It's all relative, and if more people understood this they wouldn't
make idiots of themselves on a world-wide forum.
The further we travel back through evolutionary history and compare
ourselves with extant species, the bigger the differences become. Our
closest relatives are chimpanzees, and we are almost identical to them
in many ways, not least of which is in our DNA. We not only share
well over 90% of DNA with them, we also share evolution's mistakes in
our DNA with Chimpanzees because those mistakes occurred before we and
they became separate species. This is something that could not be
true if some god had created us as separate kinds 6,000 years ago.
Dolphins are further away from us on the evolutionary scale and while
we have a lot of similarity to them also, it is not as much as we have
with chimpanzess. We share a lot of similarity with mice, too. They
have only 300 genes we do not have and we have only 300 they do not
have, out of a total of 30,000 genes we each have. This means that it
takes only some 60 million years and a base pair change every two
years to turn a mouse ancestor into a human or vice-versa, roughly
speaking.
On that basis I experienced a momentary epiphany

No, but it could explain why some people blather inane comments when
they don't know what they're talking about. Matsuzawa was not the
first to make this observation. Carl von Linne, the Swedish botanist,
also noted this when he created the taxonomic system.

Only because we are carbon-baseed life forms. If we find other life in the
multiverse they will hold a quite similar percentage. If you breath oxygen,
eat organics, and drink water you must have a DNA that is at least 95% or so
like us (my guess).

Getting back to seriousness, I agree, yes, it is very sad those people you
mentioned and others will abuse the situation, rather than respect the time
it has taken you to present a valid argument and either (a) respond with the
same level of respect and dignity or (b) at least admit they cannot respond,
even if it doesn't alter their faith.
Unfortunately it seems the newsgroups are going through a period of turmoil
where fewer people are willing to INVEST THEMSELVES into a discussion, and
perhaps they are fearful of ridicule in simply admitting they cannot respond
(because they lack knowledge in a given area necessary to provide a cohesive
reply). Of course if your expectations are too high you might take offense
to someone trying to use what logic they possess to take a stab in replying
to a post that is really way over their head.
It is sad that those you mentioned and others not worth mentioning are in
effect bastardizing the newsgroup discussions, which has an effect of
discouraging legitimate point-counterpoint discussions.

If you define "answers" as unsupported, childishly idiotic opinion
based on blind faith and nothing more, then you bet I don't like them.
You've disastrously misled yourself into thinking you can overthrow
145 years of solid scientific support for the Theory of Evolution
published regularly in refereed science journals from multiple
scientific disciplines, and do it with nothing more than a one-liner
in an Internet news group, and I won't let you do it. Learn to live

you creationist losers need to do is clean up your sour grapes instead
of misguidedly and tediously turning them into whine.

There is not a single shred of 'solid scientific support; for evolution

You know Dave, you're right. They always have to resort to these kind of
mindless, toddleresque tactics sooner or later. It's not like intelligent
people the world over haven't already realized that creationists have no
legitimate claims, but it's nice of them to demonstrate it so willingly for
anyone who still harbored any doubt. :-) In fact, Mad Scientist is giving
_such_ a good demonstration of how non-credible the creationist position really
is, one might think he's someone actually _trying_ to make the creationist
position look bad. Well, keep it up, MS, between you and Pastor Dave,
creationism doesn't stand a chance. :-)

Like a mental case like you would understand "reason"! What a laugh.
You're nothing but a puppet for Disaster Dave, who is too big of a
hypocrite and a coward to even pretend he can begin to try and support
his empty blather - blather that mirrors your own precisely. That's
what's so funny. Neither of you can even begin to address the
incredible weight of evidence supporting evolution - evidence gleaned
by people of every faith, every creed, every culture, from every
nation on the planet for 145 years. So what;s left for you to do?
Whine, gripe, post unsupported empty-headed blather on Usenet and then
attack those who, unlike you, refuse to be a sheep indentured to a
4,000 year old Middle East myth.
You've disastrously misled yourself into thinking you can overthrow
145 years of solid scientific support for the Theory of Evolution
There is not a single shred of 'solid scientific support; for evolution

Only a complete imbecile would post a lie like that and imagine it
might be believed by anyone with an ounce of intelligence. Another
unsupported statement from the creation camp, which is so blinded by
faith that it thinks simply saying something makes it true! What a
riot you are.
Do you think you're god, so that when you say something like "let
there be light" it happens? When you say "evolution has no evidence",
145 years of documented evidence will disappear, or something? What a
truly clueless blasphemer you are.
Let me smack you in your silly, slack-jawed face with one item of
evidence: the fossil record. The only intelligent and rational
interpretation of that is evolution. A global flood, which is
scientifically impossible, will not even pretend to begin explaining
the geologic column and the fossil record.

Assuming that a generation is, on average, no more than 25 years, the
number of your ancestors, assuming no intermarriage among them, over a
period of 100,000 years would have to be more that 10^1500, a number
ending in 1500 zeroes. The present population of earth is on the close
order of 6,000,000,000, with only nine zeros
Since humanity, in some form, is now thought to be several times 100,000
years old, it is hardly a surprise that everyone will have a whole bunch
of ancestors in common.
As I understand it, mitochondrial DNA is inherited unchanged except by
mutation from one's maternal parent. Through so many generations, it is
reasonably certain, just by probability theory, that there are several
women common to everybody's maternal line of ancestry. Comparisons of
mitochondrial DNA bear this out.
