Women 'dumb' to get pregnant
By Samantha Maiden
February 04, 2005
From:
A COALITION MP calling for a ban on late-term abortion has questioned why
older, educated women in Australia are "so dumb to get pregnant
willy-nilly".
As Health Minister Tony Abbott defiantly declared last night he had no plans
to take a "vow of silence" over abortion, leading anti-abortion Liberal MP
Alan Cadman said he wanted more support for women to adopt or bring up their
child, but wondered why there were still so many unwanted pregnancies.
Asked why abortion statistics suggested it was older women who were having
the most abortions, not teenagers, Mr Cadman, 67, said he could not
understand why.
"I can't believe that women in this day and age are so dumb to get pregnant
willy-nilly," he told The Australian.
"Well, I don't want to suggest they are silly, but it must be unexpected.
We've got to give them better options than they have now. Australia needs
more home-grown kids."
Mr Cadman said late-term abortions were particularly troubling, suggesting a
ban after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
"Say there's 400 (late-term abortions) Australia-wide, I would like to save
every one of them if possible."
Mr Abbott yesterday rejected any suggestion he had masterminded National
Party senator Ron Boswell's questions on notice over abortion or played a
role in the creation of a new interfaith anti-abortion lobby group that met
in Sydney on Monday night.
"I was informed it was happening and subsequently invited," Mr Abbott said.
"I have not taken a vow of silence against discussing this issue or resolved
only to talk to people with politically correct prejudices on this subject."
Advertisement:
Mr Cadman's call for a ban was backed yesterday by Nationals senator Julian
McGauran, who said despite claims the community didn't want changes to the
law, a consensus was emerging over banning abortions after 20 weeks of
pregnancy.
"The community would support the banning of late-term abortions,
particularly at the extreme case I am dealing with of 32 weeks," Senator
McGauran said.
"I think we could involve ourselves in the Medicare questions regarding
(payment for) late-term abortions."
Senator Boswell, who helped spark the debate when he released a list of
questions to Mr Abbott, said there must be a way to reduce the number of
abortions.
"There is a process that you can avoid pregnancy and I don't know why it
isn't taken up. I don't know why there are so many abortions," he said.
Opposition health spokeswoman Julia Gillard warned yesterday that banning
federal funding for abortions would push poor women into the hands of
backyard operators.
"I haven't ever heard anybody advocate that their moral view dictates women
with wealth should be able to get abortions and women without wealth should
not, but be in the hands of backyard operators," she said.
"That's really what a debate about abortion financing at the commonwealth
level is about."
However, the ALP mirrors divisions within Coalition ranks over the abortion
debate. Labor MP John Murphy's plans to introduce a private member's bill to
demand better statistics on abortion sparked division within the party.
Labor Party vice-president Carmen Lawrence warned that any proposed changes
to Medicare item numbers would not automatically trigger a conscience vote
in the ALP.
"Whether that's a question of conscience, to change a Medicare item number,
I think caucus would have a debate about that," she said.
"Given the party platform states we support women having a choice in
relation to their own reproductive lives, particularly the right to choose
appropriate fertility control and abortion, it follows that anything that
diminishes that control would be contrary to party platform."

The fact that he didn't research the cause of these late-term abortions
for older women shows that he isn't interested in solutions. Only
politics. For all anyone knows these older women had troubles with
their pregnancy and an abortion was the only reasonable course. That
is, I believe, the usual reason for older women to seek abortions.
The fact that he (and apparently you) accepted that the cause was
promiscuity, is deplorable. Even if that were the cause, what right do
you have to condemn these women because you don't approve of their
behavior? Just call someone a ***** and they have to be punished, is
that it?

Of course the older the woman the increase in the likely hood of the child
being born with downs syndrome and other "defects".
Of course the woman could be mistaking the pregnancy symptons for the
menopause (depending on how they are obviously) and not realising until it's
too late.

Birth control isn't perfect. Condoms only work 90 percent of the
time. Guys put a lot of pressure on women to not bother with it, if
it means they have to delay getting sex. Pills which are the only
thing that work more than 90 percent of the time take more than a
month to get going. Pills have to be prescribed and are expensive.
Go to your local family planning center and get some information and
quit taking it out on women. Half the reason women get abortions is
because they can't afford to feed another child. So when social help
goes up, the abortion rate goes down.
You also don't get late term abortions for birth control. They are
dangerous and doctors don't like them, so they don't do them just
because someone asks. So that part was just silly.
