Scouts exec pleads guilty in porn case
A top Boy Scouts of America executive pleaded guilty in Texas of
possessing child pornography, but a Florida City woman says it isn't
true he had no contact with children.

A Florida City woman has denied claims by the Boy Scouts of America
that a top national Scout executive who pleaded guilty to possessing
child pornography in Texas Wednesday was only a paper pusher who never
had access to children.
Douglas Sovereign Smith Jr., 61, pleaded guilty in a Fort Worth
courtroom to a federal charge of possession and distribution of child
pornography.
The charge stemmed from an investigation in which authorities found
520 photographs and video clips of child pornography on Smith's home
computer.
He faces five to 20 years in prison.
Smith, who worked for the Boy Scouts for 39 years until his
resignation in February, is the organization's former national
director of programs and headed its Youth Protection Task Force, which
worked to shield youth from sexual abuse.
A Boy Scouts spokesman, Gregg Shields, told reporters Wednesday Smith
did not work directly with children.
But Pat Douglas, a former administrative assistant at the Boy Scouts
of America's Florida High Adventure Sea Base in Islamorada, said that
at least once a year, Smith would visit the camp to participate in a
seven-day sailing excursion during which he and another adult would
supervise six youths alone.
''There is no way he couldn't be exposed to the kids,'' Douglas told
The Herald.
``He didn't just spend his time in his office at the national
[headquarters].''
Smith denied Douglas's claims in a telephone interview with Dallas
television station KTVT.
''I never, ever took a sailing trip with any Boy Scouts and I never
participated in any sleepovers with Boy Scouts,'' Smith said.
Douglas said she called Herald news partner WFOR-CBS4 after hearing
the assertion that Smith never had contact with children.
Douglas said Smith's responsibilities included oversight of the
Islamorada camp, at 73800 Overseas Hwy., and two other theme camps in
Cimarron, N.M., and Ely, Minn.
''When you have to oversee three High Adventure bases for the Boy
Scouts, you have to interact'' with children, Douglas said.
WFOR reported that Douglas had been fired from her job at the camp.
Douglas couldn't be reached late Wednesday to comment on the
dismissal.
Boy Scouts officials couldn't be reached by The Herald late Wednesday.
But after being told of Douglas's comments by WFOR reporter Greg
Nelson, Shields, the organization's spokesman, confirmed that Smith
had supervisory responsibility over the Islamorada camp and ``would
have occasion to visit the camp from time to time as a part of his
duties in the Boy Scouts of America organization.''
Shields told Nelson he didn't know if Smith had direct contact with
children during his camp visits or supervised them on cruises.
Bret Helmer, assistant U.S. attorney for the northern district of
Texas in Fort Worth, said allegations that Smith may have had direct
contact with children wouldn't affect the pornography charge Smith
faces.
It also probably wouldn't influence the U.S. Probation Office's
investigation that will precede Smith's sentencing July 12, as long as
Smith is truthful about his activities, Helmer said.
If any allegations arise that Smith had inappropriate contact with
children, local authorities would have to pursue them, Helmer said.
Douglas, who said she worked full time at the Sea Base camp from early
2002 to mid-2004, said Smith visited the camp about four times a year
for various functions.
At least once a year, Smith would participate with another adult and
six Scouts in the Coral Reef Sailing Adventure, a seven-day excursion
that included four days at sea and a day docked in Key West, she said.
''They'd stay on the ship to sleep, then see Key West, then sail
back,'' Douglas said.
''It's a total of five days on the water and two days in the dorm'' in
Islamorada.
The case against Smith originated in November 2003, when German police
seized and examined the computers of a man suspected in trafficking in
child pornography, court documents show.
The German police forwarded information to U.S. officials that one of
the e-mail addresses was registered to Smith, documents show.

Bummer for the Scouts; I dislike seeing the basically good organization
getting so many problems (in recent months). If they did not
discriminate against atheists and homosexuals, the Scouts would truely
be what the BSA pretends to be. I also suspect that if there were more
homosexuals and atheists in Scoutting, there would be a damn sight
fewer abusers and abuses in the BSA.

This seems to be a comparatively recent phenomenon - coinciding with
the rise of bigoted fundamentalism. There have been enough ex-scouts
in the atheist newsgroups, for whom it wasn't a problem.

Why is it that those who cry intolerance, are the most intolerant? =

The Boy Scouts can be exclusive as they want to as long as they
receive no government support. That is the issue. You have a right
to all of your silly and vicious beliefs, but you do not have the
right to expect government support for them.

by claiming "that only homosecuals molest", and by pretending "you" folks
