Object: Anti-virus programs
I have been lucky not to be a recipient of the latest worm but I have
had trouble with my anti-virus program - eTrust by Computer
Associates.
On downloading the latest definition file I received a message saying
that the eTrust 5.4 will no longer be supported, please upgrade to
eTrust 6.1. OK. Download, save, run, install, and startup. Problem.
The download file, autodown.exe needs missing wininet.dll to run.
Email to CA support. Reply states that eTrust 6.1 needs a newer
Internet Explorer because it uses Internet Explorer functionality to
preform its AutoDownload. No way. My machine is an old 1996 P133
running win 95 and came with IE 3.2. I use the Opera browser. I don't
use IE. Why have a browser I don't use just to have functionality in
another program? So I reinstalled eTrust 5.4 and copied autodown.exe
to another folder and then reinstalled eTrust 6.1, and copied the old
autodown.exe over the top of the new version in the eTrust folder. It
works, does not need wininet.dll and I can keep that particular piece
of bloatware off my machine.
When the subscription runs out I will look out a new anti virus
program if anyone can recommend a good simple one that does not need
Bill Gate's latest IE.

Sure. Norton Anti-Virus doesn't require IE, but it does require Windows.
It's been around for a long time and it's still one of the best.

I used Nortons AV a few years ago but declined an upgrade from ver 2

The same old song and dance from a lame company (MS).
eTrust? Personally I've found them to be liars and unwilling
to investigate claims.

When the subscription runs out I will look out a new anti virus
program if anyone can recommend a good simple one that does not need
Bill Gate's latest IE.

Is the "wininet.dll" file the only file required for Infernal
Exploder to be recognized by Lose95? The CD-RW software I
use "requires" Exploder but like you I use Opera (5MB maximum
vs. 40MB minimum - like it's a choice!). Incidentally, my
P233 came with MesSIE 4.0 and _that_ isn't sufficient to run
the CD software. I could live with having InanE 3.0 on my
PC if it could do the job.)
I'm trying to find out the minimum files required to keep the
CD software running but adding and deleting one file at a
time is a painful process. The Bill's Penis (aka Microsoft)
and the CD manufacturer won't provide any information of it
even thought I've written to both many times over two years.
If you know, I'd appreciate you telling me. I would love to
delete everything else if I could. (It's worse for me here.
Because Koreans want Korean language support, *nothing* for
sale here among hardware supports Lose95. Things I want and
could use can't be imported - except for one ***** who
expected me to pay *four* times US retail to get it for me.)

I have been using AVG Version 6 Free Edition for more than six months now.
It has caught everything so far. Very reliable.

every 14 days to daily.
Very good. Very reliable. Best possible price.
